Exercise Six - Acting

Die Another Day Halle Berry

The decisions made by Halle Berry in Die Another Day lift her character, Jynx, from the stereotypical bond girl to an independent character who creates a subplot of her own within the film. Her first entry shows her in a bikini, flirting with Brosnan (Bond) without the audience knowing of her background. After replying to his flirtatious comments with innuendos said in an innocent voice, we understand her to have a childlike and naïve exterior, but a dirty and sexual interior. Her love scene with Bond is one of the most passionate and explicit scenes that has been shown in any Bond film already the vigour and confidence Berry demonstrates in her character elevates her above the normal Bond girl.

Berry, when later attempting to assassinate an evil scientist in the same place as Bond is blowing up the arch-villain, makes a very interesting decision to emulate Bond's movements and style. Brosnan himself has worked a very distinct acting style into his interpretation of James Bond (such as the raised eyebrow, the heavy sigh, and the faint smile), all of which Berry chooses to recreate in her character. This apparent similarity between the two actors allows the audience to view Berry as more of an action figure than a sidekick.

However, after this point the character seems to be "set up", and so there is very little complexity in the decisions after this point. Only a couple of events show important decisions for the rest of the film. The meeting of the female villain, Miranda Frost, and Berry's character shows a contrast of the two confident and forthright people. Berry chooses to take a defensive stance, her eyes not looking at Frost, but instead around her, almost looking for help from the surrounding environment. Frost, on the other hand, has a constant smile with her eyes fixed on Berry, her body leaning forward in an aggressive manner. The decisions by the two actresses shows the conflict, but also shows the weak side and lack of femininity Berry's character has.

The final decision occurs at the end of the piece, in the final sex scene between Bond and Jynx rather than the male take the lead and be the dominating figure, Berry decides to take over as the shot fades, leaving the audience with the impression that Berry's character is much stronger and more adamant than Bond himself.
