John Boynton Priestley wrote An Inspector Calls during one week in 145. He was a Yorkshireman who wanted to comment on the key comflicts taking place in English society in 145.

J B Priestley wrote sixteen novels and over forty plays in his lifetime and experienced much success. As a political and social thinker, J B Priestley used literature as a means of commenting an society and the lack of support he felt the poor had.

He was a patriotic (passionately love your country) socialist whose major issue was trying to better the lives of the poor. Priestley formed many of his opinions in the period 111-114 as he worked as a clerk (junior office worker) in a Bradford wool firm. He had ambitions to be a writer but wanted to gain life experience, so avoided university (only available to the rich) and went to work. He realised as a society we would improve if we thought of ourselves as together - not every man for himself (Arthur Birlings vierpoint).

In 114 Priestley was twenty and joined the Infantry, serving for four years. The experience of seeing death and destruction in the trenches meant he saw the very worst of human life. During WW, Priestley became famous for his BBC radio broadcasts which upset the ministry of Information (part of the Government) as he was not committed to the war efforts. It was during this time An Inspector Calls was written as a way of gaining better public understanding of the socialist views and helping Labour into victory after to war (as happened in 145).

The play was first sent to Moscow, where it was given a world premiere. It was an intresting choice, as Moscow was the home of communism and an experiment in the equality that Priestley belived in. The play fits the mood of 145, calling for major social change.

We have to fight this greay battle not only with guns in daylight, but alone in the night, communing with our souls, strenghening our faith that in common men everywhere there is a spring of innocent aspiration and good will that shall not be sealed. J B Priestley, 140.

The Birlings dining room is where the action is focused and the passing of time on stage is the same as the theatre. The breaks between Acts are not used to change scenery, so they do not disturb the action of the play. Therefore the play seems more realistic and convincing for the audience.

In Classical Greek drama, the Three Unities were followed. They included the Unity of Place, which required the location of the action to stay the same. The unity of Time, which encouraged the action to mirror the passing of real time. Finally the Unity of Action meant that only one plot existed. J.B.Priestley has successfully met all the criteria ans in the process he has created realstic characters.

The Inspector reports Eva Smiths interactions with the Birlng family to the audience. Their meetings with Eva happened off-stage, so the Inspector forces the family to decribe their past dealings with Eve in detail. His role is similar to the Chorus in Greek plays. The Inspector summarises the action and comments on individual characters, explaining the lessons that need to be learnt.

The Inspector includes the audience and this makes the play a more interactive experience in the plays characters.

Social class is an obsession of Arthur Birlings and his biggest fear after the departure of the Inspector is that he wont get his Knighthood!

The small social things matter to Sybil and Arthur, especially whan they are entertaining Gerald. Arthur has the same port as Geralds father. Sybil is unhappy when her husband says what good food it was and to Tell cook from me. This would involve Sybil actually talking to one of her servents! Likewise, the order of events is claerly defined, food, port, the women retire to the drawing room whilst the men smoke cigars. This lifestyle is very ceremonial.

The middle and upper classes clearly behave as if their wealth makes them better poeple and they are rarely relaxed. Certain things are not discussed and Sybil, Arthur and Gerald are presented as quite cold people. Prostitution, mistresses and alcoholism are all not to be mentioned and Sybil is sure that girls from the lower classes are lacking fine feelings and scruples. Her comments show her repressed emotions towards life. Sybil is only concerned with etiquette and advoiding inappropriate word of behaviour.

The Inspectors name - Goole suggests something sinister and mysterious. Goole sound like ghoul - ghostly and preying on dead souls for some sort of existence. The Inspector knew so much about Eva/Daisy and uses his omniscient (all knowing) knowledge to get confessions from each of the birling household and Gerald Croft. The term renaissance man means a well rounded individual with many tallents. The era of the renaissance was an influential and significant part of history. Its time period is generally accepted to have occured from about 150 to 1550. Its era intails the renewed focus on greco-roman art and culture and during the middle ages was rejected by the church as paganistic and therfore not worthy of mans attention.

The major thought perspective during this time period was on two powerful upheavals, the rebirth of rich cultural development through the knowledge of art in the Greco-Roman world and the focus on preparing for life after death. As well humanism begins to appear with a stronger sense of scientific awareness. This is shown through inventions such as gun powder and the telescope.

Politics and the society, in general, advanced in this time. The government became more efficient by hiring people based on thier ability rather than birth. Centralized states were ruled by Strong Monarchs. In society the middle class broke away from feudal lords and the power of the church while the women attained more independence. The nobility still did not want to pay taxes and the argument was that they protected the lower classes.

Some of the discoveries during the renaissance had a monumental impact on the society itself. Inventions such as cartography and the astrolobe which was a moveable typing press had propelled the era in a scientific direction. Advancements in medicine and human/animal anatomy also began to occur along with a greater understanding of our solar system.

The culture that was alive at this time had been striving for ideal beauty. Artists had experimented on perspective, anatomy and mathematics. There was a strong cultural duty to restore Rome to its former glory and the art and architecture were evidently geared to be big. The strong Greco-Roman influence focused on the human body and the end of the renaissance saw the beggining of opera.

The renaissance was a product of thriving city life that had developed later in the middle ages. From the fifthteenth century onwards dramatic changes in agriculture, exploration and the economy were apparent. New land was discovered and trade began to develop along with the global economy as goods were shipped.

Women of the renaissance were symbols of their time. They were skilled and cultivated. Womens interest had evolved and they began to take on rolls in music, plays and collecting books which meant that they were becoming litterate. This is when woman became more politically involved and important figures such as isabella dshe and elizabeth tudor began to emerge.

Throughout time the renaissance was revealed by historians as a change in the way people live. Its term means rebirth and thats exactly what it was. A rebirth of every aspect of living including the well known art of the time. Its era was dedicated and well pronounced as they accomplished many of the things that make our lives what is today. Its well worthy of its recognition today. Please note that this sample paper on renaissance is for your review only. Of the eight stages involved in the new-product development process, commercialization is where the rubber meets the road. A complete market strategy for commercializing a new product must consider when, where, how, and to whom the product will be introduced. While market-entry timing, geographic rollout market identification, and early adopter/heavy user/opinion leader identification is critical, it is the execution of the introductory market strategy that will ultimately spell success or failure. Apple Computer's marketing plan for the launch of its iMac computer provides an excellent example of how to properly introduce a product into rollout markets.1

In a marketing scheme that draws close parallels to his 4 release of the original Macintosh, Apple CEO Steve Jobs demonstrated his mastery at brining a product to market. Jobs' clear vision of the iMac's critical path schedule, beginning with its dramatic May 6 introduction to the media, generated an excitement that was essential for Apple's successful return to the consumer PC market after 14 years. Apple followed up on Jobs' initial theatrics; their marketing strategy included an iMac countdown on radio stations nationwide, a giveaway promotion straight out of the book "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", casting Jobs in the role of Willie Wonka, and a midnight madness sale at major computer retailers on the eve of the iMac release. A $100 million ad campaign, Apple's largest ever, was put in place to be sure the iMac buzz continued long after its initial release. And just what did Steve Jobs and Apple get in return for their flawlessly executed marketing plan? Apple's stock tripled in value since the iMac unveiling, in the week prior to release, there were 150,000 advance orders for the $1, computer, and marketing researches estimate 7% of iMac buyers are converts from Windows-based PC manufacturers.

Painting, carving, sculpture, and music which are known as creative expression are means of serving religion and to the artist means of expressing religious connections. Both art and music may serve as a religious function towards one another and show no real difference between the two.

Paintings of sub-Saharan Africa started as early as 5000 B.C.E. with the earliest from of art known as rock paintings. Rock paintings were found in the Tassili Mountains in the central Sahara to the Nile River and in eastern and southern Africa. Wood carvings such as masks and sculptures such as statues were more familiar among sub-Saharan Africa. Sculptures and carvings represent the gods, spirits, and ancestral figures; Terra-cotta and metal figurines also served a similar purpose. Bronze and iron statues that used the "lost-wax method" were produced by metal workers in Ife what is today known as southern Nigeria. The lost-wax method was melted wax replaced by molten metal. African wood carvings and metal sculptures were a form of "primitive art" which was known as not being appropriate. The art was labeled not appropriate because it was too sophisticated and often done by an employee of the royal court.

African music and dance also serve as religious functions just as sculpture and wood carvings. To sub-Saharan Africans, dance was a way to communicate with the spirits while the movements of the dance represented the spirits coming out of the humans. Many different instruments were used such as drums, xylophones, bells, horns, and stringed instruments such as the harp. While singing along with the musical instruments the person's voice is often put together in story form. Singing was also repeated so the audience was able to participate along with the storyteller. The music was often used for events such as weddings, funerals, and religious ceremonies; it also served as education helping young children to learn information about the history and social traditions of the community. Music also took place of telling folk legends and religious traditions. Also storytelling was done by the priestly class which was familiar with the use of music instead of writing the story on paper.

There is no real difference between art and music; both are just two different forms of creative expression, expressing the religions of sub-Saharan Africa.

The Puppet Masters

In Greek culture, there is an obvious cosmological division. The conflict and situation that arise between the gods and the humans in Homer's masterpiece, The Odyssey bring about many intriguing questions. For example, are the gods in the novel for entertainment purposes only? After finishing the novel, I have been pondering these questions often.

The first question that arose in my mind had to do with what some critics say. They state that the Greek gods often reflect and exaggerate human conflicts more than they create them.I definitely agree with this statement. The gods and humans in this novel often act like a mirror. For example, both experience lust.Athena experiences lust for Odysseus and Odysseus lusts for Kalypso. In book 5, the lusts are very apparent.Odysseus questions why he has to leave the nymph."After all these years, a helping hand? O goddess, what guile is hidden here?" (Homer and Fitzgerald 86 ).Athena also expresses her devotion to Odysseus when he leaves."…while over him Athena showered sleep that his distress would end, and soon, soon" (Homer and Fitzgerald 5 ).This is one example of how the gods parallel the humans like a mirror.

The statement, Greek gods often reflect and exaggerate human conflicts more than they create them, is true and it works wonders in Homer's masterpiece.Without the gods exaggerating human conflict, the novel would be far less interesting. For instance, Poseidon exaggerates the human characteristic of revenge.Comparing Poseidon to Odysseus, Poseidon is vengeful towards Odysseus because he blinded his son.Odysseus is vengeful towards Melanthios because he assaulted him.The god Poseidon's vengeance is an exaggerated version Odysseus' vengeance, so the outcome is far worse. When Odysseus has his way with Melanthios, he tortures him."From storeroom to the court they brought Melanthios chopped with swords to cut his nose and ears off, pulled off his genitals to feed the dogs and raging hacked his hands and feet away" (Homer and Fitzgerald 44 ).Although this is very horrible, it is nothing compared to Poseidon's revenge upon Odysseus."Go on, go on, wander the high seas this way, take your blows, before you join that race the gods have nurtured.Nor will you grumble, even then, I think, for want of trouble" (Homer and Fitzgerald ). As one can see, without the gods exaggerating human conflict, the novel would be far less interesting.

The Odyssey is a conflict for power on earth and on Mount Olympos. As any novel involving a hero, the hero defeats many and overcomes numerous trials. In this particular novel however, the power on earth seems almost the same as the power on Mount Olympos, which crates conflict.Even when Poseidon tries to severely weaken and even kill Odysseus, he fails."Lo and behold, the mouth of a calm river at length came into view, with level shores

unbroken, free from rock, shielded from wind- by far the best place he had found (Homer and Fitzgerald ). Odysseus seems almost as powerful as a god."Now flashed arrow from twanging bow clean as a whistle through every socket ring, and grazed not one, to thud with heavy brazen head beyond. (Homer and Fitzgerald 404 - 405 ), Now of course, none of these feats could be accomplished without help or punishment from the gods, but conflict is still caused between power on earth and Mount Olympos.

The final question that entered my mind when reading The Odyssey is that of the gods' role in the novel. Are they only a matter of entertainment? I don't believe entertainment is their sole function, but it is a very large part. While reading this novel, I was constantly reminded of a soap opera.Homer does a very good job in making the gods very entertaining.Their whole family tree is basically a soap opera. There is fighting, inbreeding, eating of children, love, lust, and breeding with mortals. This is very soap- opera like. Athena's love/lust for Odysseus turns entertaining when she has a liking for Odysseus. He is very much in looks like his father. "Odysseus; hands and feet were like this boy's; his head, his hair, and the glinting of his eyes" (Homer and Fitzgerald 57 ). The story of Odysseus blinding Polyphemus and Poseidon's anger is very entertaining. The gods do teach some important lessons in the novel, but their main purpose is that of entertainment.

After finishing Homer's The Odyssey and thinking about it, I now understand the Greek cosmological division and its mechanisms.I understands the gods' entertainment value, their exaggeration of human conflict and how that works in the novel, and the conflict between earth and Mount Olympos. Many interesting questions arise about "the puppet masters" in this novel, and those questions are brought about by the best "puppet master," Homer.

Setting goals for oneself is very important. You must have something to work towards in order to please your conscious. As for most of my peers, I have been asking myself a question, what it is really I want out of life? This question has been bothering me and I am sure other college students who are trying to figure out which road they would like to take, that would pilot them to a comfortable life.

Goals exist in many forms. Some goals will assist us in working towards bigger goals.Short-term goals facilitate in meeting those long-term goals. One of my short-term goals is to become more motivated. One way to become more motivated is to constantly remind myself that a worthwhile pay-off lies ahead; a new, healthy, strong self would emerge.Exercising more will improve my overall health and fitness, but will also improve my appearance, energy level, and social interactions.

Becoming more physically fit is another short-term goal of mine.I have procrastinated for quite some time and lately I have become lazy.Being active is important to me.When I am active, my energy level is high and I am able to accomplish more and manage my time more sensibly.Becoming more active will help me accomplish my other objectives that I will set for myself.Another short-term goal I have created for myself will have long-term advantages.I recently got a new position that requires me to become more effective as a manager and take on additional responsibilities.Since I have started this degree program in Business/Management, this will help me to apply classroom situation to the work place and vice versa, upon completion of this degree, I will be able to further my job search not to mention become more experienced.

In additional after completing my studies, I hope to get a better job, with developmental opportunities, that I would enjoy doing.I do not want to just settle or stagnate in my current job.I want to have a brilliant career that will last for some time.During the last several years, I have made many unwise decisions with finances.Over the next couple of years, I plan to have paid off those debts and to become more educated about my finances.I wish this could have been more along the line of short-term goal, but unfortunately, this will take some time and much obedience.

When you have goals that you are trying to reach for, you must take small steps.Creating realistic objectives is a means to finding that satisfying end.Short-term ambitions aid you into meeting the long-term target. So setting goals for yourself is a very good start at championing the impossible.

Introduction

Knights were a important part in medieval times. They were used as protection on the manors to stop invading enemies. The worst hated were the Vikings. Knights did more than just sit around and wait for someone to attack them. The trained for when there was going to be a battle and also taught soon to be knights. They also had tournaments for practice and entertainment. Probably the most common tournament known today is jousting. Jousting is where two opponents are on horses going as fast as they can with very big and long poles and try to hit there opponent off of their horse which is also moving and the opponent also has a pole. In the tournaments they first used very sharp and pointy jousting sticks but too many people were getting hurt and no one thought it would be fun to enter a tournament where you get hurt so then everyone agreed to use blunt jousting sticks instead of using sharp pointy jousting sticks so that people wouldn't get hurt as bad. Jousting then lead to a !

game called tilting that became popular back in the 1400's. Two knights would be on horses heading towards there opponent in narrow lanes so the horses could not hit into the other horse. The knights would carry jousting sticks and try to hit there opponent of of their horse. There was also many other games that took place at the tournaments like sword fighting and many others.

Training

Before becoming a page you would learn take care of the woman in his family. Also during this time he learned how to take care of horses and how to ride a pony.To become a knight you would first have to go through many years of hard work. You would first start of at the age of seven as a page until your teens. During this time a page would learn how to fight with swords and play games that helped him learn strategy and skill. He would also learn how to hunt with birds like hawks and falcons. He also learned manners. When you became a squire you were mainly the knight's servant. A squire would also take care of prisoners in a battle. A squire had to help out his master. If your master went to war you would have to go to war with him. If your master was hurt you would have to dress his wounds. Then if your master died you would have to make sure that your master had the proper burial grounds and funeral. Then i f your were very good and proved it to your master you might become !

a knight. But becoming a knight just didn't happen over knight. (That was a play on words.) Becoming a knight didn't happen until you were eighteen and that was only if you were one of the best pages and squires. Most squires were knighted at a time of peace but some squires were knighted on the battlefield i f they had shown great bravery. The first knighting ceremonies were very simple but then later in time the ceremonies were more complex. For example, in early knighting ceremonies all a knight did was buckle the armor on the squire and he was knighted. In later ceremonies one knight would buckle on the armor and another knight would put on the spurs. The squire then knelt before the knight that was going to knight him. Then the knight would give the squire a blow to the back with his hand. Then the knight tapped the squire on the back again with his sword but he did not cut him because he used the side of the sword that wasn't sharp. After that the knight said "I dub you!

knight" and then he was a knight. When the knight tapped him with the side of the sword it was called the accolade which means neck from the French word col. When Christianity became more popular Christianity was linked in with knighthood. The night before a knight was going to be knighted he would place his armor on the alter and pray all knight. He also would confess, fast, and keep vigil. The next morning he would take a bath which was uncommon in the Middle Ages and put on special clothing.

Cost of being a knight

Back to the tournaments. If you lost to a good knight in one of the tournaments you were forced to give up your armor and horse. Horses and armor were very expensive. It cost $5.55 to have a horse. It cost $. to have a knight and squire for one year at the beginning of the 14th century. At the same time for a okay castle it would cost $08.45. The money produced by the Templar properties in Hertfordshire made $67.10. The knight would probably own his own armor. In the first half of the 1th century a good helmet would start at $10.7. With the accessories it would cost $84 or 800 grams of gold. But everyone thinks there were hundreds of thousands of knights in the Middle Ages. In a country called Essex which was a highly fuedilized country only had 4 active knights in the year of 15. You may think that the horses, the knight and squire pair, and the castle were very cheap but remember that this was 67 years ago. The costs for this was calculated on May 1, 17 so!

your prices may be different.

Orders of being a knight

Knights of the Middle Ages made groups of themselves called orders. They promised loyalty to there leader and made a military organization to defend their land against attacks.

The Code of Chivalry

Chivalry another name for a knights behavior did not happen until Christian ways became part of a knights life. A knight would love a church so much that he would die for the church if he had to. He used his strength to protect the weak.

Clothing

In the 1100's knights wore a sleeved tunic reaching below his knees.Over the one tunic was another tunic that was sleeveless tunic and was open at the sides and was tightened with a belt.Over that he wore a cloak fastened at the shoulders and also wore long stockings with leather shoes.

Then in the 100's the under tunic came down to the ankles. The knight would also wear a surcoat was fur-like and had long sleeves and a hood that covered his head.

In the 100's clothes were more colorful and more complex. The tunic that used to come down to the ankles only came down to the lower back and had buttons going down the front.Every thing was tight on the suit.Decorative hats started to become popular.

In the 1400's there was a ton of decorations. The surcoat was creased and edged with fur. They also started using shoulder pads. The shoes were so pointed hey curled up like one of those elf shoes and then had a chain that went from the point to the knights knee.

Armor

A knight would have a helmet that would cover his head and his nose.A knight would also wear a long leather or padded fabric garment.Over the garment was chain mail armor. Then in the 100's knights started wearing a helmet that covered the entire head. They also wore plates of armor on there legs and arms and other places where the chain mail wasn't strong enough. The shield was much smaller so it could easily moved to protect the face and neck. The knights main weapon for fighting was the lance but the knights also used maces, swords, and battle axes.

In the 1400's the armor would cover the entire body. They started using metal gloves and boots. The swords became less heavy.

Gunpowder became popular in the 100's and a knights armor was so heavy that a knight would have to be lifted up onto his horse with a crane. If he fell off of his horse on battle he could not get up without help and the enemy would kill him.

Because a knight had so much armor on the only way you could tell who he was was by his coat of arms. The knights coat of arms showed up on his shield and on his surcoat that was worn overtop of his armor. His horse also had a cloth which had his coat of arms on it.The knights lance had a small flag with his insignia called a pennon. His helmet had feathers or some other kind of light material on the top.

Knights today

Some of the clubs today include the word knight but I don't know why.So here all the places that involve the word knight. Most of these are Roman Catholic Clubs.

The Knights of Columbus is a international organization. It was founded in 188 by a Roman Catholic priest for insurance benefits for Catholic families. Now they sponsor welfare, educational, and religious programs. If you want to become a Knight of Columbus you must be 18 and be a practicing Catholic.

The Knights of Columbus are located in the United States, Canada,Mexico, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Panama, Guam, and Guatemala. The Knights of Columbus also has the Colombian Squires Department which is a organization for Catholic boys from 1 to 18 years old.

They also help unprivileged children and the handicapped orphaned and anyone else that needs help. They have a film library of about 1 million pages from books in the Vatican. They also offer scholarships and insurance.

The international headquarters are located at Columbus Plaza, New Haven, Conn. 06507.

Knights of the Bath is one of the oldest orders of knighthood in England still around. It was founded by King George in 175 it originally had the king, a grand master, and 6 knights companions. Its name comes from a ceremonial bath, the symbol of purity.

Ending

This paper will be designed to give a complete contrast and comparison of two major law enforcement agencies in the U.S

The Police Department of Philadelphia, as in other cities, is a military-like organization in which each sworn officer holds a rank. Ranks begin with patrol officer and end with police commissioner. The job of managing and directing the department rests in the hands of the Commissioner, who reports directly to the city's Managing Director and ultimately to the Mayor.

My goal is to uncover the similarities and difference between these two agencies to help develop a better understanding of how each unit operates and their role in enforcing the law.The Central Intelligence Agency has lost at least a fourth of its employees, a fact that hinders its capability of collecting foreign intelligence and its ability to interpret much information. In the late 180s, the CIA had about ,000 employees; today, that number is 16,000. However, now the CIA is hiring new candidates for the agency. The CIA has started its greatest recruiting effort for analysts and spies in more than ten years. The CIA is attempting to return to the fundamentals and improve the two most important aspects spying and analysis of data. The budget of the CIA is classified, but it is thought to be between two billion and three billion dollars. Congress increased the agency's budget; this increase is estimated to be between $00 and $00 million.(Loeb) Criticisms and ethical questions surround the CIA. Frederick Hitz, inspector general of the CIA, has admitted that the CIA did not stop connections with people who were in favor of the Contra program(Stamper). Some secret activities that have raised ethical questions are the CIA's attempts to kill Cuban dictator, Fidel Castro, and prohibiting of the election of Chile's Salvador Allenade("Central Intelligence Agency" 54). For obvious reasons the CIA is a secretive organization; therefore, it is not able to make public the majority of its information that comes from secret sources. However, sometimes the agency does publish unclassified releases. These reports consist of international, political, and economic information. The CIA has a very limited number of tours of its headquarters near McLean, Va., which are for civic and academic groups only.(Online) The Central Intelligence Agency is perhaps the most misunderstood and unappreciated security system in the United States, for much of its work is unseen and unpublicized. Without it, however, our country would be more vulnerable to our enemies, and the stability of our government would be seriously jeopardized.

Iago's speech in Act two Scene one, line 14-40, mainly shows us how Iago uses Roderigo in his plan in visiting mischief on both Othello and Cassio starting by giving Roderigo a picture that Desdemona is a woman of loose morals. Iago's clever use of language made this possible and it also further shows his manipulative and scheming nature. We also know that he sure knows himself well as he knew that him being a master orator is able to make Roderigo believe that Desdemona is a woman of loose morals. This can be seen in the first line of his speech "Lay thy finger thus, and let thy soul be instructed."

Firstly, Iago tries to convince Roderigo that Desdemona will stray from Othello because she is a woman of loose morals and is only interested in physical relationships. He used a great amount of food imagery to present the idea of feasting which is symbolic of Desdemona's sexual appetite. He said, "Her eye must be fed." This suggests that Desdemona is only interested in the physical relationship she shares with Othello and is not truly faithful to him. The idea of feasting and Desdemona's huge sexual appetite is also further emphasized through this phrase "heave the gorge, disrelish and abhor the Moor." This suggest that Desdemona has huge cravings for men and she will "gorge" on them until she thinks she has too much and is sick of them and needs to be 'replenished' with "a fresh appetite". Iago used these food imagery to make Roderigo believe that Desdemona is a woman of lust and that she has no deep feelings for Othello at all. He characterizes the relationship as a purely physical one. This point is also further emphasized when he said " When the blood is made dull with the act of sport…" which suggests that Desdemona is only attracted to Othello by his sexual performance in bed and will soon get sick of it.

Iago's speech also plays on Othello's insecurities perfectly. He implied that Othello lacks "loveliness in favour, sympathy in years, manners, and beauties", all of which can be found in Cassio. By listing Othello's defects is also suggesting that it would not be surprising if Desdemona leaves Othello for another man. He also juxtaposed Othello's character defects and Cassio's character strengths. This makes it seem that Desdemona will find Cassio more attractive than Othello and if Desdemona stays from Othello, Cassio would be her "second choice". Iago does not say this directly but in an indirect way such that he makes Roderigo review the situation. This way he starts planting ideas in Roderigo.

In the last ten lines of Iago's speech, he started to insinuate remarks on Cassio's character. He repetitively referred Cassio to as a "knave". This emphasizes the fact that Cassio is much younger and attractive as compared to Othello. This again shows why Othello might lose Desdemona (to Cassio). Iago said that Cassio is "voluble" and "conscionable" in putting on a "civil and humane" form. However, he also added that though smooth-tongued and conscientious in outing up a polite front, they are to conceal the lecherous side of him. This can be seen when Iago continued to say that that it is "seeming for the better compassing of his salt and most hidden loose affection". Iago here casts a deluded portrayal of Cassio to Roderigo. Iago also said that Cassio is "young" and "handsome" and that these qualities in him attract the "folly and green minds". This shows that Iago is trying to imply that Desdemona is one of these immature people who are taken in easily by looks and appearances. He plants these ideas into Roderigo so as to convince Roderigo into believing that Desdemona is of fickle and loose character.

From what Iago has said, we are now further reminded and more aware of Iago's scheming, manipulative and crafty nature. We see how he cleverly uses language (food imagery) to emphasise a point Desdemona is a woman of loose character. These points though strongly and clearly received, are some how subtly put across in an indirect manner. His planting of ideas into Roderigo's mind is done craftily and this shows that he is a master of insinuator. His success of his manipulation of Roderigo can be attributed to these. We see that these character traits in him are vital as they help him in achieving his ultimate aims subsequently.

You will need to include more than just the examples in your supporting paragraphs. You will need good topic sentences, direct quotations from the text, smooth transitions from one example to the next and from one paragraph to another, and logical concluding sentences.

Use exemplification paragraphs to provide instances that clarify your topic statement. The topic sentence is supported by examples that illustrate, support, and clarify the main point.

Exemplification is part of any good essay. However, for this assignment, you will be judged primarily on your ability to provide strong, concrete examples to support your overall thesis. Please see the grading rubric for more information about what makes an A, B and C essay.

Please note that because this essay is expected to be formal in tone, I will not allow the use of lax sentence construction in the name of personal style. This means that you cannot use sentence fragments for effect. This is formal, academic writing.

All essays must be presented using MLA format, including a Works Cited page (the only work you will be citing will be Angelas Ashes.

Please see http//owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/research/r_mla.html for specific guidelines or visit The Writing Center (CAC 11) to refer to one of the many MLA style books available there.

A good thesis is not a statement of the obvious; rather, it is a statement that requires evidence to support its veracity. In contrast to the thesis statement presented above, one might argue that McCourts book offers no hope to its readers, as the authors story chronicles the cyclical pattern of rejection and abuse in his life.

Regardless of what your thesis is, you will have to support it with compelling examples from the text.Your thesis should be sophisticated. It should make the reader think about the topic. It should raise questions and challenge assumptions.Given that you have all been reading Anglelas Ashes and responding to the readings in your journals (including textual quotations throughout), you already have lots of ideas from which to begin.Think of this essay as taking one of your journal entries, expanding upon it, and presenting it in a more formal way.

Going back to our example thesis, you may choose to give examples of the different situations in which Frank, as a character in his own memoir, perseveres in the face of adversity, as a way of showing that the book is hopeful. Here are some examples that will help support this thesis

Dear Peter,

I have had some out of town company so I was unable to return your phone call.I hope that your wine tasting at Cynthia's house was enjoyable.I understand that you asked Todd and Steve for reports with their version of events which is very nice of you.

Whatever they say though I would like you to know that Todd was very aware of what happened at the party; in fact, the bussers went to Todd to talk about it.I tipped the door more than 100% more than I should have so I certainly wasn't hiding anything.Brandie Perry was with Todd when the subject of my tip came up so if he denies this, he is lying.

As for Steve, what could he know because he does not make a practice of being at the restaurant when business is being done anyway.I find it surprising that he can justify not being at the restaurant when it is busy.Did he tell you that he wasn't going to be on the floor during business when he interviewed for the job? If he didn't, I would think that would be a breach of that contract and an opportunity for you to get somebody in there who might even work for his money. The problem with Steve never being there according to my attorney is that he is responsible for any harassment or misconduct that occurs whether or not he knows about it.Naturally, since he isn't he wouldn't know but this ignorance could jeopardize your restaurant

Without getting into some of the other issues that I brought up the other day, I would like you to know that I followed the MC policy to the letter. The menu states that parties of 6 or more pay a service charge, this particular guest negotiated everything about the check with Fadja prior and well knew that service was added, and I told him in plain English.I didn't make the policy; I just followed it - period.

Naturally, Steve would like me to be gone from the restaurant so now he will retroactively try to justify the firing - but it was unjust and I think most people know it.

1.The four common mistakes in requirements determination are

Assuming a functional system

The IS should be viewed as a cross-functional system (working for all parts of the company, can be used by multiple departments) rather than just functional by the end user and his/her department.

Collecting Requirements from Each End User instead of All End Users

The problem here is that enormous amounts of time could be spent interviewing each individual end user and it could also affect their answers for the analyst.

Asking the Wrong Questions

The end user tries to answer every question that the analyst asks, but if the analyst asks a wrong question, the end user will answer it probably with a wrong answer.Questions asked must be about the IS environment rather than what the end user needs in order to diagnose a problem.

Failing to Allow Refinement through Trial and Error

The use of trial and error can be an important time saving learning experience.Too often analysts don't use a prototype (trial and error) to see how users react, and just create a system without getting and feedback.Gathering information from those users can allow for changes of the system in order for an easier to use IS to be built.

.Advantages/ Disadvantages of Direct Interview

AdvantageDisadvantage

•Wide range of objectives can be met•Time

•Respondents feel like they are part of the new system (helping answering questions)•Don't know the validity of users answers

•One question can lead into many (additional feedback information)•Depends on how well analyst can communicate

•View nonverbal communication (facial expressions, body movement)•

•Opposed to questionnaire, hard to understand questions, can be changed so that each user can understand them and answer properly.•

.Advantages/Disadvantage of Direct Observation

AdvantageDisadvantage

•Achieve information-gathering goals•Design Time (Planning, Structure)

•True understanding of events/activities•Snapshot effect (not continuous)

•Info that cant be obtained any other way•People don't like to be watched

•Info on what should happen•Some Bias

•Information flow model•Time Consuming

INTERVIEW QUESTIONS (End User)

1.Can you describe your daily activities?

.How much time do you spend reentering data?

.What would you like to change about the system?

4.What parts of the system do you dislike?

5.Are you satisfied with your system?

6.How would you feel about a new system?

7.Would you be interested in GUI?

Interview Questions (Jenna)

1.Would it be efficient to combine multiple interfaces into one big one?

.Would it be more efficient if you could print out your own reports?

.Could we eliminate personal databases and create a group database?

4.Could we set policies to standardize the computer products?

African American slavery was based largely on the idea that white Europeans were inherently superior to all other races. This inherent racism made it easy to justify slavery, and the mistreatment of slaves. Slaves were often treated as less than human, and lived their lives in servitude to their white masters.

In contrast, white Europeans brought over to the Americas for use as labor were largely retained as indentured servants. Due to the whiteness of their skin, indentured servants were eventually granted freedom (after working off their debt) and faced no enduring social stigma. They often became landowners and leaders within the community (The United States Information Agency).

This paper examines the treatment of African and Indian American laborers in Colonial America. The paper reveals that the fate of early modern American laborers was based primarily upon color and race. While class was an important consideration in the treatment of laborers in colonial society, the effect of class was much less important than that of color. The paper examines the effect of these racist practices and how they effected racist policy and thought for generations.

Discrimination is the results of a prejudicial attitude or belief on behavior. As an example, thinking "I dont like that person because they are wearing a brand-name shirt" is a prejudicial belief. Avoiding that person because they are wearing that shirt is discrimination.

In addition, how discriminatory a person is capable of being is directly related to what that person has power over. In the example, youre discrimination ends at yourself, since you hold no power over the person in the brand-name shirt. This is not to say it is right, far from it; it is just that it only affects the other person so far as the they allow it to. If someone avoids me because of what I am wearing, I have to allow them some power over me if their discrimination is to have any effect on me. I probably will take offense to it, but that is only because I have given them the power to offend me.

In any type of heierarchical society, whether its capitalist, communist, or tribal, some people are given power over me due to how much money they have or what position they have in society. Some examples of this are banking (loan officers), housing (realtors), and the workplace (bosses). In those cases, discrimination from people in these positions of power over me will effect me, as I have no choice but to give the discriminator power based on their position. To put this another way, interpersonal discrimination will only effect someone if they let it, but business, political, or legal discrimination will always effect someone, because they are forced into a position where it cant help but matter.

Please note that this sample paper on Racism is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. Commercial National and City Bank of Commerce of Columbus, Ohio merged to form City National Bank and Trust in 1.John H. McCoy became president in 15, starting a family dynasty. His son John G. McCoy took over for him in 158.In the 160's, City National hired a comedienne, Phyllis Diller to do its radio and TV commercials. The commercials launched Diller's career and made the bank famous. In 166, City National offered the first Visa credit Card outside of California. It also created the first drive-up bank, and was one of the first banks to use ATM's.Later, McCoy formed a holding company called First Bank Group of Ohio, which became Banc One in 17.As soon as interstate barriers collapsed, the bank moved into India, Kentucky, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

John B. McCoy, third generation of the banking family, became CEO in 184.During his reign, the bank acquired over 100 banks in the Midwest. The bank also bought over twenty failed banks and expanded into Texas in 18.In 11, the bank moved into Illinois. The bank entered a development alliance with Banco Nacional de Mexico in 1.The number three bank in Louisiana, Premier Bancorp, was purchased in 16.A year later, it added Liberty Bancorp, based in Oklahoma City. With the purchase of First USA in 17, Banc One became the third largest credit card issuer behind Citicorp and MBNA.

Bank One formed after a $ billion merger in 18 between Banc One of Columbus, OH and First Chicago NBD.The combined Bank One was 40% owned y First Chicago stockholders and 60% owned by Banc One, to become the fifth largest bank in the nation. (Later dropping to sixth)

In 11, Banc One's annual report announced the slogan "Building share-holder value by sticking to the nuts and bolts", with a focus on having a good understanding of the 'nuts and bolts' of the business. The strategy developed was straightforward and simple to continue the success of the organization. The 1 annual report, almost identical to the prior year, cited three basic strategies

Serving retail and middle market customers through community banks, with operation on local autonomy, plus a strong central financial and credit controls

Enhancements of retail products, competitive advantages, operating efficiencies and the generation of nontraditional bank revenue source, technologies

Bank acquisitions to be treated as ongoing lines of business, with a focus on pricing and management disciplines

Banc One had many challenges implementing the above strategies.Once having overcome the major tasks profits would increase. With opportunities, risks are also involved, with risk a strong management system must be in place to succeed. Banc One overcame acquiring problems by implementing "Uncommon Partnership philosophy".In this area Banc One would decentralize the people side of the business, centralize the paper and electronic transactions, and operations would occur under a 'superb financial management system'.Banc One also focused on the customer needs, with strong attention given to 'total quality management'.Banc One understood that measurement of an organizations competitiveness returns to the human and financial capital in place.Human capital was a focus with the decentralization of people.Financial capital was based on the Equity, according to McCoy.

"As to financial capital, equity is a prime determinant of growth, even survival, in the new banking environment.Banking organizations with the strongest capital positions have the most options as the industry continues to consolidate… they will be the survivors."

An extremely important element to the success of Banc One was the "McCoy factor." The bank was able to trace its roots back to 1868, with three generations of McCoy's molding the policies and practices of the bank.In the three generation of McCoy's in charge, Banc One began to invest in marketing, research and technologies, which would bring the organization ahead of the competition. As government regulations also changed, John G. McCoy expanded into other states successfully. As Banc One acquired banks, the local autonomy and keeping the existing management team in place was a primary focus.Systems were in place to assess these new "uncommon partnerships" by peer banks. These systems caused a great deal of "healthy competition" between the affiliates.Awards systems were implemented, a corporate ethics program was executed, new ways of communication were presented and many other systems of keeping employees involved and interested.A share and compare system was formed.Banc One also relied on its powerful financial control system, MICS to provide key operating information to assist with performance targets at all levels of the bank.

The uncommon partnership was a strategy that remained unchanged since the beginning of Banc One's time.Banc One focused on successful banks with proven records of accomplishment, with the policy of not overpaying, no hostile takeovers, and make no single acquisition with assets greater than one-third Banc One's size. In case of failure, it will not affect the bank dramatically.

Banc One's 10 year average performance from 18-1 was the perfect testament to their success. The below table includes ratios in comparison to the industry (competition).

Bank One was formed after a $billion merger in 18 between Banc One of Columbus, OH and First Chicago NBD.Banc One had a large retail operation located primarily in the Midwest and Southwest.First Chicago NBD's strength lay in its long history of corporate lending to medium sized manufacturers.40% belonged to First Chicago stockholders and 60% owned by Banc One.With this merger, McCoy did something he had never done before, merged with an equal, thus causing the movement of the Bank One headquarters to Chicago.McCoy left the bank after both sides battled as to who was in charge and who should manage the business, as a result regional practices prevailed; resulting in the stock losing half its value in two years.

In 000, Bank One's board asked Jamie Dimon to take over as CEO.He inherited a badly managed, poorly organized bank.Dimon invested $56 million of his own fortune into the bank, and cut 8000 jobs.Dimon replaced 1 of the 1 top executive managers at the bank.Today Bank One is the sixth largest bank holding company in the U.S., with assets over $60 billion. The bank has 74,000 employees at ,000 branches in 14 states.

The story of "Epicac" written by popular satirist Kurt Vonnegut takes its readers into the life of man and machine. There was been an excessive rise of technology in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and in Vonnegut tries to satirize the growing boom of technology in modern society. Vonnegut's major theme in the story of the doomed computer tells readers one important thing about modern society. Society is relying on technology too much and is going too far with its technological advancements.

The story takes place in an enormous lab for militia who are trying to develop the world's largest super computer to use in general warfare. The computer, known as a Epicac, came out to be the world's largest computer consisting of seven tons of electronic tubes, wires, and switches that covered the entire fourth floor of the building that he rested in (7). He was built to plot the course of any rocket located anywhere on Earth and could do the quickest calculating than anything else in existence (7). Lastly, he could sustain a conversation with the narrator (). Computers were not created to speak to people. They are just used to accomplish certain goals that humans would take months or maybe even years to achieve. If humans created a machine that could talk on its own, well that would be a giant leap in the advancement of technology. Vonnegut makes readers wonder if talking computers are really necessary. Is technology really supposed to be going that far?

The character of Epicac in one of his conversations with the narrator beings to learn the meaning of love. He writes poems that deal with emotion and prints them out to for the narrator. The narrator signs the poems and gives it to his crush, Pat, who only begins falling in love with him the moment that she reads the first poem. Being that the poems are about feeling and love, Epicac experiences emotion. Computers were not meant to experience emotion, but were created just to do work. Throughout the story, Epicac writes more and more poems and beings to believe that he is falling in love with Pat. Epiac begins to become more and humanistic in personality that it begins to feel as if he really is a human that can live and breathe just like everyone else.

Almost nothing is known about the narrator. All that the readers know is that he is in love with Pat. Readers are not even introduced to the narrator by name throughout the whole story. The narrator uses the poems as his own and gives them to Pat. He "steals" Epicac's poetry to us for his own personal benefit.Epicac is describes a lot more in the story as being more of a concrete character than the narrator. From the beginning of the story he is described very well letting the reader see how extravagant of a creation Epicac really is. He is so much more concrete than the author that it seems that Epicac is supposed to be thought of as a human character. Epicac only does good for the narrator, he wishes for love just as the narrator did and just how humans do, and have the heart to have be a human being.

How can a piece of machinery have a heart? Well, Epicac is so enamored with Pat that he beings to believe that he loves Pat too. But, she can't be in love with him because he is a machine. At the end of the story Epicac "commits suicide" (04) knowing that he can never be loved. He loves Pat so much that he leaves the narrator five hundred poems for the narrator to give to Pat. Epicac knew that the narrator steal his poetry, but forgave and gave the narrator the going away present of poetry. The narrator says, " I loved and won-EPICAC loved and lost, but he bore no grudge. I shall always remember him as a sportsman and a gentlemen. Before he departed he did all he could to make our marriage (he and Pat) a happy one. De mortuis nil nisi bonum- say nothing but good of the dead" (04-05). In the final words of Epicac the narrator even recognizes Epicac as a human being. He speaks of Epicac as if he were a kindly human that had just passed away. Epicac is a human with a "heart", but he just lacks protoplasm(0). The narrator had the protoplasm, but just kind of lacked the heart that he is supposed to have. So just who is the human now? Vonnegut intentions were to make the readers believe that Epicac was a human. Once again, computers are not meant to be humans, but if technology is going at the rate that it is going now, humanistic computers could be very possible to exist in the future.

"After all that money, Epicac didn't work out the way he was supposed to" (7). Humans invest so much money and time to try to get a head of everyone else in technology and sometimes their intentions just go awry. Sometimes, creating more and more isn't necessarily a good thing. Sometimes, man just creates because they want to play God. Vonnegut says that man needs to slow down in technological advancements because who knows what could happen with technology at the rate that we are going? Next time someone tries to play God, remember Epicac.

The Money Laundering

The purpose of laundering money is to disguise their origin, to convert money gained from illegal activities into money that appears to have been legally earned. Dealing drugs, illegal arms sales, smuggling and all the others types of crimes, can generate huge sums. Embezzlement, insider trading, bribery and computer fraud schemes can also produce large profits and create opportunities of laundering theirs gains. Those gains are not declared to the government, so the criminals have to find different ways to dissimulate their profits, to invest and spend the money without getting caught. They do this by disguising the sources, changing the form, or moving the funds to a place where they are less likely to attract attention.

They're places in the world where they are called Paradise Islands. In those places the money is kind of safe because its hard to tell from where he came from, so the authorities don't have enough information to catch the authors of the crimes. All over the world they're places where money laundering is not a crime, like in the West Indies (Jamaica, Bermudas, Aruba, Caiman, etc…), in Panama, Afghanistan, Israel, etc… Professional money-scrubbers are attracted into those countries because money laundering is not against the law, and banks and brokerages most of the time don't verify the provenance of a customer's investment funds.

Because of this enormous problem, twenty-nine countries have been united and form an organization to fight the money laundering, the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). However, where the efforts of the FATF, the issues of money laundering will ever be a huge problem. The International Monetary Fund has stated that the aggregate size of money laundering in the world could be somewhere between % and 5% of the world's gross domestic product. Using 16 statistics, these percentages would indicate that money laundering ranged between 50 billion and 1.5 trillion USD. In fact the money laundering affects businesses, economic development and the society at large.

According to Billy Steel, who has an honours degree in Financial Services and who is interested in money laundering, authorities are afraid of the future because of the new technologies, the new of exchanging money whit e-cash (virtual money) and organized crime owning banks. Organized crime controls some banks, already in Russia it is said that criminal groups control over 400 banks and 47 exchanges.

Money laundering is a large-scale issue all over the world, and a international problem, authorities and the government should being able to work together with those countries who money laundering is legal and enable financial institutions to play a role in dealing with the problem.

Throughout life we have heard many people repeat wise sayings. The majority of the time we don't stop to think about what these sayings really mean. For example, "Those who truly love you and care about you will make you cry." How can you love someone and make them cry?

When I was younger and very rebellious, I would always be disciplined by my mother. She would make sure I was doing the right thing and never getting myself into trouble. I always thought she hated me and never wanted me to have fun. One day I remember I was playing Super Mario on the Nintendo and she told me to turn it off and start doing my homework. I didn't want to, so I kept on playing. She came in to my room a while later and told me again to turn the game off. She then sat with me at my desk until I was done with all my homework. Afterwards, I turned to her crying and asked her why she was so mean to me; she looked at me and hugged me saying, "Those who love you and care about you will make you cry." My mother cared enough about me and my future to force me to do something I didn't want to do, at the cost of making me cry.

You will find many people throughout your life that will, at one point or another, upset you in some way. Don't think that it is only because they want to upset you, they may be trying to help you in some manner. If someone honestly cares about you and loves you, they will look past upsetting you, and concentrate on making your life better in any way they can.

As you can see, not always does someone make you cry because they don't like you and only want to hurt you; every once in a while, you will find someone that makes you cry because they honestly love you. Please note that this sample paper on How Can You Love Someone and Make them Cry? is for your review only. I had been staring at him all night. The only reason he came up to me was probably because he had noticed. We started seeing each other on a regular basis and really got along well.I had no idea that he was a heroin addict at the time.

By the time I found out, we had been together for a couple of weeks, and my feelings for him were rather strong.Leaving him wasn't an option at this point; I wanted to help.

Convincing him to go to rehab wasn't easy, but I did it.First he had to go to the hospital and, of course, I went with him.Hours went by before he was seen, and he started to get sick from withdrawal.Keeping him there was getting more and more difficult as the time passed; his muscles ached, and his temper was getting to be short fused.Luckily, soon after he started to get sick, the doctor saw him and gave him something to make him feel better. He had to stay in the hospital for three days; every day he just got sicker and even more depressed.I stayed with him as long as the nurses would let me; I wanted so badly to make sure he was okay.

When he left the hospital, he was sent to a detox program rather than a regular rehab. This program only lasted for three days, which was rather unfortunate considering that he had been doing heroin for so long that it wasn't just a physical addiction; it was extremely psychological too.The day I picked him up from the program he was still sick, but they wouldn't let him stay any longer for insurance reasons.Later that day he did heroin, but I didn't hold it against him; I knew that he needed to stay there longer, and it wasn't his fault.

Determined to stop, he started trying to get into a methadone clinic. It wasn't as easy as you would think though.Every morning at six o'clock, he would drive all the way to Trenton, and for all most a week they kept telling him to come back the next day and he did.Eventually he did get into the methadone clinic, and I was so proud of him for actually going every day and stopping the heroin usage.

I tried my hardest to be supportive through this.It was a very hard time for him, and it wasn't easy for me to be there for him the whole time.During withdrawal he wasn't very agreeable, and it was very stressful for both of us.When he told me that he wouldn't have been able to do it without my help and that I may have saved his life, it made all of the hard times worth it.

To know that I actually made that big of a difference in someone's life changed the way that I felt about myself.I finally knew that there was a reason for me to be here.Even if it was just to help him that was enough. Now I never wonder why I'm here or think that there is no reason.I'll know forever that I at least made a difference in one person's life.
