"Fire and Ice"
By Robert Frost
In the world and human life, fire and ice are known to be the exact opposites.Since being a baby or young child, we have been taught about what things are hot and what things are cold.It is relevant to realize these things before touching them, for one may become seriously injured.Frost uses fire and ice as symbols. Some things may be as hot as fire or as cold as ice. Some people may favor "fire", such as the heat in summer days or the passion in love.Others may prefer the cold winter days, enjoy playing in the snow, or feel like they want to be left alone.Fire is a very strong symbol that may represent love, passion, desire, or full blown torture and pain.Ice is a symbol that represents the absence of passion, disinterest, or even hatred.
In the first two lines of "Fire and Ice", Robert Frost expresses the possibilities of how the world may end. This does not necessarily refer to the whole entire world.A possible interpretation of these two lines could mean destruction caused by either fire or ice. When some say that the world may end in fire, the "fire" is not directed as a burning flame, but represents the image of intense pain that may arise from a fire and the amount of time which it may spread or occur.Fire causes an unbelievable amount of destruction to anything in a couple of seconds. It could also represent a violent and painful ending for human kind, because fire can kill in seconds tops, but the pain is very intense, which may not make it worth it to end life quicker.Ice, on the other hand, seems to represent the world ending in a slower manner than with fire.Even though with ice it would take longer to perish, it is not as intensifying as burning in fire.Ice represents the image of a slower and numbing effect, and Frost uses ice to represent a slow type of change and torture that will eventually lead to the destruction of mankind.
Another possible interpretation of this poem could be about love and hate.Love is usually associated with passion and desire, which is born of fire. People yearn for and have burning desire for the person that they are interested in.The cold emotions, on the other hand, are hatred and lack of interest or care, which are born out of ice. Both of these emotions are extremes of the love of humans. In the quote, "From what I've tasted of desire, I hold with those who favor fire", Frost expresses the emotion that from all love that he has felt or seen, he agrees with those whom favor fire, because they have expressed a lot of passion and desire, and the world for them can end quickly with the fire. When frost writes "But if I had to perish twice, I think I know enough of hate to say that for destruction ice is also great", to me means that the speaker may have had a rough life full of hate and disinterest and does not care to having a slow, more tortured ending. It would therefore be suffice because the speaker has experienced the effects of both fire and ice within his lifetime, and knows which way he would rather see mankind destroyed."Both of these extremes destroy the soul of humanity and the individual, and the metaphors of fire and ice fit" (Yahoo).
The tone of this poem is unemotional.I can imagine the speaker speaking in monotone. As I read the poem, I sense that the speaker is more towards "ice" because he speaks about the world coming to a destructive ending, and is willing to accept whatever destruction will come.He seems like a cold and careless human being. The tone of the speaker, however, does not shift throughout the poem.Frost includes abstract words to refer to love and hate. The word fire refers to love and desire. The word ice refers to hate, perish, and destruction.
This poem to me was interesting because it has many different interpretations and readers might perceive the message in different ways. When I first read the poem, I perceived that the idea was about life and going through good and bad times, fire representing the intense moments and experiences in life, and ice representing the cold, lonely days.I sensed that the speaker was not a happy person, and did not care if he burned to death or drowned in water cold as ice.As I further interpreted the lines, I came across the idea about love and hate, and about death and destruction, which is what I think Frost tried to convey to the readers."The beauty of the poem is revealed when Frost unifies twp opposites into a coherent form to make us understand their connection" (Yahoo).
