Graduation According to the Collins' dictionary a graduate is "a student who has completed a course of studies… and received a diploma." I personally feel that that definition is rather inadequate. It rather simplifies the process that all of you as students and you as parents and you (and I) as teachers have gone through to make today a reality. When I think back upon this past year, graduation means a lot more than some dictionary definition.
Graduation the process of prodding children out of bed, insisting that they actually bathe and brush their teeth, eat some sort of breakfast, quickly finish the homework that they swore they finished the night before and piling them into the family or car pool vehicle to arrive at school on time.
Graduation the process of unending homework, killer tests, teachers and parents who just don't get it. The lost weekends; the uncertainty of the phone call home and the dreaded white slip.
Graduation the marking the triumphs the marking; the disappointments; the marking; the uncertainty of the phone call home and, hopefully, the satisfaction that perhaps you made a difference.

I got the inspiration for the next section of my speech from a book entitled Chicken Soup For the Mother's Soul. I was reading through the book ( which may seem odd, considering I am not a mother) and came across a story entitled "Motherhood A Trivial Pursuit".I have taken the liberty to borrow and modify this article a bit in what I call "Parenthood The Ultimate Board Game of Survival" The object of this game is to raise healthy, happy, well-adjusted children without losing your mind in the process.
Square One You are waiting the arrival of your first born child. Mothers, if you look at your rapidly expanding waistline and say, "As soon as the baby is born I'll be a size six again," deduct marbles for wishful thinking.
Square Two It is two years later and your second child is soon to be born. To avoid sibling rivalry you, as parents, have prepared carefully for the event, spending "quality time" with your firstborn, giving him his own baby doll to feed, bathe and cuddle. On a typical day you drop the youngest off at her music lesson, then go with the boys to their soccer practice. Then back to pick up daughter and drop accumulated World Cup contenders off at their assorted homes. It's dinner on the fly because somebody has to be at drama practice at 700 p.m. It's now bedtime and you discover that you have an extra kid. But you don't panic… it's happened before and soon the phone rings as another parent discovers that he's missing one.Collect five marbles for endurance.
Square Five The little darlings that you tucked so lovingly into their beds for so many years suddenly treat you as though you have left your brains in kindergarten. They are embarrassed to be seen with you. Guess what You are the parents of young teenagers! - those strange creatures who think they are eight feet tall and bulletproof. "Nothing can hurt me. I'm Superman! Watch me chase speeding trains and jump out of trees without doing any serious damage to my body." If you somehow survive this age period with your senses intact, collect eight marbles for heroism under fire. Until then, always remember that you hold the ultimate weapon you have the car keys.
Square Six You can tell your oldest child is home from college when you see the pile of dirty laundry in the front hall. If you take the clothes downstairs to sort, wash and press as in days of old… deduct three marbles and shame on you. If, instead you take him by the hand and show him the room where the washer and dryer have been housed since he was small, collect five marbles. Some of the most important things in life are not taught at school.
Square Seven The children, by some miracle, have grown into responsible adults. By chance you overhear your now grown-up son telling the same bedtime stories to his first-born that you so long ago told to him, and the tears fall silently down your cheeks.
