Existentialism is an effective tool for dissecting movie plots.The following paragraphs will examine the existential dilemma in The Wild Bunch, On the Waterfront and Cool Hand Luke.
The Wild Bunch, one of the great westerns of the 0th Century, tells the story of a group of men who made their own law in a land of lawlessness.Set during the Mexican Revolution, this film shows the horrors of village life and the many hardships that Mexican peasants experienced.The aging band of outlaws wants to retire, but they have to make one last score.They rob a bank and shoot their way out of town.When the bags of loot are opened, they find money has been replaced with washers! At this point, the group starts to get riled up and there is talk of splitting.The leader Pike (William Holden) explains, quite sternly, "When you side with a man, you stick with him.If not you're like animals.You're finished… we're all finished".The group flees to Mexico and sees firsthand the poverty that Angel (Jamie Sanchez) and his people have endured under the rule of General Mapache (Emilio Fernandez).The gang stumbles upon General Mapache and is given the opportunity to make one hundred thousand dollars if they can deliver sixteen crates of guns.Everyone accepts the terms of the proposal but Angel, who tells the group he will forfeit his share of the reward in exchange for one of the gun crates (to be used by his people so that they may defend themselves).The men make good on their word and cunningly deliver the guns; but when it comes time to give Angel his share of the money, General Mapache and Dutch (Ernst Borgnine) call him a thief and agree he should be dealt with accordingly.When Dutch delivers the news of Angel's fate to the group, they ride back and Pike offers half of his reward money to get Angel back.The General declines and tells them to drink and take advantage of the Mexican whores instead.The remaining members Lyle (Warren Oates), Tector (Ben Johnson), Dutch and Pike have come to the conclusion that if they're going to kill and steal, they better do it for a worthy cause.During the film's climax, the group makes their way to the General and asks for Angel one last time.Mapache agrees, but soon after he cuts Angel free, he also cuts his throat.Pike shoots the General and we experience the true existential moment of the film.Everyone has their hands in the air.The men can leave if they want, but they don't.They know it's the end and they want their final moment of glory.The last scene shows Freddie (Edmond O'Brien) reuniting with old group member Thorton (Robert Ryan) as they ride off to continue the work of The Wild Bunch.
Decades ago, when Marlon Brando looked attractive, he played the lead character in On the Waterfront.Terry Malloy, an ex-fighter/boxer, is one of the many dockworkers for a corrupt union boss.Terry witnesses the murder of Joey Doyle, brother of Malloy's soon to be love interest, Edie Doyle (Eva Marie Saint).Edie is home from the convent to visit Pop Doyle (John Hamilton), but decides to make her stay longer in order to find out who killed her brother.Edie's desire to get information from Terry becomes more intense, and Terry starts to feel guilt about the death of Joey.Father Barry (Karl Malden) tries to help Edie find out more, at the same time trying to get the dock workers to stand up to their corrupt union boss, Johnny Friendly (Lee Cobb).Terry's conscience leads him to confess all to Father Barry, and in turn the Father leads Terry to confess to Edie.Edie runs off in tears and Johnny goes back to his just trying to stay alive, "Every man for himself" attitude.Charley (Rod Steiger) is told to finish off his brother Terry if he finds that he has decided to testify against Johnny Friendly.Charley tells Terry, "You don't say nothin', you don't do nothin'." Terry realizes that he has been kidding himself about the union boss not owning him.Charley realizes that Terry is going to confess, but lets him go free; this ends up costing Charley his life, which I suspect is some kind of strange retribution for Joey's death.Terry revenge-testifies against Johnny Friendly, and Johnny lets Terry know that his days are numbered.During the climax, Terry exclaims, "I'm going to get my rights" and he marches off to the docks, only to get the shit beat out of him by Johnny and his henchmen.The dockworkers witness the beating and proclaim "If Terry doesn't work, we don't work!" They finally take a stand and push the boss into the water.The film's last scene shows Terry bloody and stumbling, leading the workers down the right path to a legitimate employer.
Cool Hand Luke, one of my all time favorite movies, is the story of Luke (Paul Newman), a strong, free spirit who lives by his own set of rules; well, free until he is arrested for cutting off the heads of parking meters.Luke's beliefs, actions and personality soon win over the other inmates at the prison camp he is sent to.The camp bosses try to break Luke's spirit, and habit of escaping the camp; they resort to locking him up in an excruciatingly small stall for days on end, along with brutal beatings.The other men at the camp look up to Lucas and befriend him. However, when Luke cries out to the camp bosses to stop beating him, the other inmates are no longer infatuated and seem to abandon Luke.Upon returning to the holding quarters, Luke stumbles, falls and cries out "Where are you now?" This statement coincides with the existentialist belief that every man is essentially all alone.During Luke's last, cunning escape from the camp, his most admiring inmate Dragline (George Kennedy) accompanies him; but it's not long before Luke says his goodbye and continues on his own; again, existentialist qualities are observed.During the poignant, climactic scene, Luke makes his way into an old church and has a conversation with God. Luke tells God that he made him the way he did, and asks what he is supposed to do.Dragline catches up with Luke and says they've been caught; he explains that as long as Luke gives himself up, that the camp bosses will not hurt him.Luke opens the church window and smilingly exclaims "What we have here is a failure to communicate!"(A favorite statement of the camp captain).After Luke's proclamation the evil SOB Blind Dick (Richard Davalos) shoots him.The last scene of the movie is Dragline telling the boys back at the camp that Luke had a huge smile on his face as his body was carried away.The bastards didn't break him! Vive Cool Hand Luke!
