My single most memorable leisure experience I ever had was when I went hiking on a Fifth of July. My Auntie Bean and her husband, Mike, decided that they wanted to bring along a kid to share a hiking experience with. I had shown interest in the activity and was psyched to go. So along with another couple, Donna and Reed, and their daughter about my age, Kelly, we went on an overnight hiking trip on East Royce Mountain.
We left on the third of July, hopeful that it wasn't going to rain. We arrived in Bethel, Maine, to see that it was about to rain. It rained that night and into the fourth. The weather began clearing up that night so we were able to see the local fireworks. I was getting along with Kelly and we were having a lot of fun getting to know each other.
The next day proved to be a perfect day for a hike. We loaded all our stuff up into our backpacks and drove to the mountain. Everyone was excited for the hike. We started up the mountain about o'clock in the afternoon and disembarked at about 0. Setting up camp was a fun. I helped cut up some firewood so we would be able to roast our marshmallows and have a good time at night.
Everything was going perfectly, the views were incredible and the weather was holding out nicely. Dinner of ramen noodles was good and we were having a blast together. Night time grew upon us and the marshmallows were toasted and it gave us great spirits. We were unaware what was to happen next.
Bang! Bang! Bang! The sounds threw us off. We weren't sure of where it was coming from. We looked out on the horizon and saw little fireworks in the distance. More started coming, only from different places. There were about seven different towns having their firework shows that night because of the weather the night before. I stood there with my aunt and uncle, both of them holding my hands. It was the first time in a long time I had experienced a true family feeling. It was so perfect. Most of the towns' endings were at the same time so we were able to watch lots of fireworks at the same time. It was truly a magical experience.
I chose this memory because it was one of my first overnight hiking experiences. My aunt and uncle opened the door to hiking and outdoor activities to me by taking me along with them. They've taken me hiking, fishing, boating, kayaking, canoeing, etc and I've loved every moment of it.
My aunt and uncle were also there for me and took me to out of my house when my parents were starting their divorce. It was good that I was able to get out of my house and not let the negative energy that was in it to get to me. They gave me a different family to go into, not to replace, but to stay family orientated when my immediate family was falling apart.
Kelly and I became great friends that holiday too. We instantly connected and made a friendship bond that has lasted us for years. We would be taken together with our families on four day hikes, canoeing trips, etc. and we have always had a blast together. Even though we aren't in much contact today, I enjoyed her company in the wild and will always remember the fun times that we shared.
The firework show that we all shared is the topper of our trip. I would have remembered the experience without it, but it just made the night even more magical and memorable. It was such a surprise too. We weren't expecting them at all. When the bangs were going off, we were shocked to find that they were fireworks. Even though most times when you do see fireworks, they get pretty boring because once you've seen one show, you've pretty much seen them all. However, looking at about seven shows going off right in front of you is an amazing sight. We were the only families on the mountain too that; so it seemed like only we were the ones in on the wonderful show.
