Hero

Everyone has his or her own hero. For some people, their hero is Abraham Lincoln or soldiers who can fight for their own country and save the people. For some other people, their hero is someone that doing something bravely and done wonderful and meaningful things to help other less fortunate people. To me, a hero is someone who can always be there for you, to comfort and give you supports and advices on your down time and to make sure that you always get the best in life. The person that I really respect and admire is my mother because she would always be there to support and encourage me emotionally as well as financially. She also helps me to feel confident. If my mother was not there for me I could have dropped out from school.

My mother is a very generous and working hard person. She takes care of everything in the house. She does the laundry almost daily, and she folds clothes nicely and put the closet in order. She cleans the house everyday. She is a very organized person; therefore, the house always looks neat and clean. Also, my mother is a good cook..She cooks good food for my family everyday. She makes sure that we eat healthy food by making salads every meal.I really love her cooking. Every time when I come home from school and open the door, I can smell the food, its smell very tasty and delicious which makes me starving. Even though, my mother is very busy for my family, she takes time to go to temple every Saturday and volunteers to cook for the master. She is devoted to Buddhist therefore, when she goes to the temple she always prays for the family to have good health and luck.

When we arrived in the United States my family didn't speak a word of English. We came here with an empty hand.My parents had to work hard and get low pay to support us.Especially, my mom has two jobs in order to support me go to school.HoweverI really admire my mom so much because she always gives me a good advice when I get stuck in some hard decision. For instant, when we first comes here, I felt so homesick and didn't want to go to school. My mother stood by me all the time. Even though she also felt cultural and language disorientation but she tried her very best for not letting me know about her unhappy feeling. She has encouraged me to go to college and study hard. She always says, "If you want to have a bright future, you should try your best to go to school, don't give up. Education is very important in this country. If you have any bad feelings, don't hesitate to tell me.I am not only you mother, but I am also your friend.I will stand by you and be there for you whenever you need me." Knowing that my mother always care for me a lot, I feel deeply touch; and I promise myself that I will try everything that make my mother happy.

INFLATION

The causes of inflation are intertwined, entangled, complex and complicated to take apart. The two principle causes of inflation are demand-pull and cost-push.Both these theories of inflation are connected to one essential aspect the impracticable expectations of people and their challenges to get more out of the economy than the economy can manufacture.Inflation is an increase in the general level of the prices of goods and services.Inflation is the overall general upward price movement of goods and services in an economy, usually measured by the Consumer Price Index.Over time, as the cost of goods and services increase, the value of a dollar is going to fall because a person wont be able to purchase as much with that dollar as he/she previously could.During periods of inflation, salaries and incomes tend to rise speedily.

When investigating the causes of inflation, it is useful to look at the fundamental notions and thoughts of the demand side and supply side of markets.Demand-pull inflation is when aggregate demand goes beyond the economy's capability to create goods and services, causing prices to be pulled up by anxiety from the demand side of the economy.Cost-push inflation is when the consequence of the economic power of a number of large employers and influential labor unions, can be used to push up incomes and prices.

Who pays? Costs of Inflation

Inflation will not only influence individuals, but will also cause troubles for the whole economy. The costs of inflation include

Uncertainty - if inflation keeps unstable, then companies may be unwilling to invest in new plant and equipment, as they may be unsure of what the government will do in the future.People also may be hesitant and reluctant to spend. Both of these factors could diminish the long-term level of economic growth.

Income redistribution - many people have to live off fixed incomes, predominantly those on pensions. The higher the level of inflation the less their income will be worth. This result can also happen among people who are working, as their incomes go up either quicker or slower than inflation. These effects can randomly redistribute income.

Menu costs - this is a general term for all the problematic costs that businesses and individuals face.As costs increase they have to redo their price lists, change price labels, reprint menus and so on.If inflation is constant these costs can build up.

Competitiveness - if our prices are escalating faster than those in other countries, then our goods will be less competitive and less in demand. This will have a negative effect on the balance of payments.

Why the concern about Inflation?

Inflation inflicts suffering on the economically frail. It can be said that inflation falls hardest on persons who are least able to defend themselves, the economically weaker crowds in civilization. The people most strictly affected by inflation are individuals on fixed income. As the purchasing power of the set income falls due to inflation, their typical way of living is driven progressively downwards. The largest and most critically affected such group is pensioners, whose pension is fixed for the remainder of their lives.

Inflation is not a new phenomenon; history contains many examples of outbreaks of inflation. Recently, conversely, it has become evident that very quick inflation can in point of fact contribute to high employment, by disappointing capital investments spending by industries.

Inflation is a complex economic process in which various causes are often intertwined and difficult to disentangle. As a result of all this, there is significant misinterpretations involving the public as to the explanations of inflation, with dependability being attached to a mixture of big businesses, high interest rates, labor unions, low interest rates, governments, and people's greed, to list a small number of issues.Nevertheless, such efforts to allocate responsibility for inflation tend to puzzle rather than simplify matters. We should look to economic ground rules, rather than the bad side.

Energy is the capacity to do work.Energy cannot be created or destroyed because the amount of energy in the universe remains constant. It can be converted from one for to another.Energy has a one-way flow, which moves from forms with a higher quality of energy to those with a lower quality.

When the sun shines down on plants, energy is captured and temporarily stored as a chemical bond energy of ATP.The energy that is absorbed release a certain amount of electrons, which enter the electron transport system.Water molecules split forming ATP and NADPH.In this process oxygen is released.PGA accepts a phosphate group from ATP, and then hydrogen and electrons from NADPH.This is the result in the formation of PGAL.In order to form glucose, two PGAL must combine.Excess PGAL is converted to starch.

Photolysis occurs in the chloroplast of the plants.Water molecules are split into oxygen, hydrogen ions, and electrons. The free oxygen atoms form O.CO is let in at the stomata, O is released. This is where we get the oxygen to breathe.

Cells are the smallest unit that lives independently. They are found in all organisms. They come from pre-existing cells. The plasma membrane holds the cell together. It keeps all of the organelles and cytoplasm inside the cell. The membrane also controls what goes in and out of the cell. The plasma membrane has a phospholipids aligned and hydrophilic and phobic areas. The fluid mosaic model theory is an idea that there are two layers of molecules, a lipid bilayer. These two layers are made up of molecules called phospholipids. Each phospholipid has a hydrophilic and hydrophobic end.The hydrophilic head allows water-soluble substance into the cell, and the hydrophobic tails keeps any substances that are not supposed to be in the cell out.

Cells also undergo cell division. This occurs during cell cycle. The cell cycle starts every time a new daughter cell forms by mitosis and cytoplasmic division and ends when that cell finishes its own division.Mitosis, cytoplasmic division, and interphase represent one turn of the cell cycle.

A primary issue of concern in the media and communication arena is the existence of entertainment culture. Entertainment culture that is synonymous to "packaging." It has been said that media is no longer the business of informing but it now concentrates on the task of entertaining.Postman's fear is that present-day information is being reduced to mere entertainment. That relevant language is being replaced by surface theatrics.

Reporting and imparting news has become marginally biased. There is a lot of propaganda created, all for the sake of keeping the public riveted on their channel. Propaganda, and the art of it, is now raised to an alarming level due to the emergence of new media.New media such as, computer aided graphics, sound engineering, the accessibility of information via the web and so forth. All these in conjunction with a business savvy allows the producer to throw in "everything he's got" to come up with an entertaining piece.Notice how content is now secondary.

There is no doubt that the power of media can transform any story.Given the same content and situation, the treatment will make all the difference.Case in point, Pigafetta's account of the Battle of Mactan and the recent Manila filmfest entry, Lapu-Lapu Both based on the same historical incident; treated with, one as information being the priority and the other a box-office financial return; one can say that they may have even been two different topics altogether. For the latter, having Joyce Jimenez prance around with the many other topless female extras already proves that entertainment can be an aid to the story telling or a distraction.Either way it is media that transformed the message.

We are now what Postman calls " a people amused into stupidity" because we are spoonfed with information whose only significance is its aesthetic value. To be re-elected, our politicians go through the route of showbiz in order to reach celebrity status. They come armed with "music, imagery, theatrics etc." instead of purely relying on the public's perception of their social and political integrity. What matters more now, form or substance?

Like many powerful tools, entertainment can be bane or boon to society. On the one hand it can spoil the collective into "not thinking for themselves" anymore but on the other hand, it can be the most effective tool for relaying relevant insights. Perhaps entertainment really is not an indication of the deterioration of intelligence in society. In my opinion, it is a better ally than an enemy.

It may be the most effective means of distributing information to the public at this point in time.In its defense, it may be argued that entertainment is a way of touching people. Nowadays, especially in the Filipino context, it may seem to be the only way. Take TV Patrol for exampleone entertainment factor is Mike Logan's rhyming/reporting packaged in that annoying sing song tone of voice. Having this example, one can ask if issues of society, culture or politics are really trivialized when imparted through wild bursts of song and dance numbers? In some perspectives, intelligence/information, in fact, to a certain extent is enriched by the type of presentation it is packaged inthe medium and the execution of imparting knowledge/information.

What is the measure of intelligence anyway? Why can we not consider entertainment to be a sophisticated style for dispersing information? At this point it seems to be the most effective. Intelligence is not compromised in fact, the human brain is stimulated, taking into consideration that entertainment is very relativeas diverse as each persons preference and character. Intelligent matter does not deteriorate in themselves. Also "forms of communication are neither bad nor good in themselves." If packaged properly and presented in a way that "serves within a social order" no matter how high the entertaining factor is, the information imparted should communicate really well.

Postman's take on this whole bit on the deterioration of intelligent material due to the entertainment culture holds a lot of truth, generally speaking. Although, observing the pinoy scene, I highly doubt that Filipinos have become more stupid. Shows like Sineskwela, Balitang K, Morning Girls seem to be doing a fine job. In fact they raise issues of concern and stimulate the public into forming their own opinions on certain issues. Perhaps this is still an indication of intelligence.

What is it with Filipino viewers that makes entertainment work so much on them? In our type of society are the "rigors of learning" really necessary? Is this how we gauge the extent of high intelligence? By what standards do we gauge high intelligence anyway? Is it the ability to think and comprehend without the aid of visual accessories and artsy, humorous and entertaining hullabaloos? The tricky thing here is how to strike a balance between ethical and objective restraints and aesthetic freedom. It takes a really gifted media person to be able to find the right tension between deciding what information to impart to society and the best way to present this information to them, without compromising any relevant knowledge. Regardless if the public pays attention for its entertainment value or not, the media person will have struck a balance In the end, we realize that the challenge of media is to find the golden mean between substance and presentation. And from there, we allow the viewing public to discriminate on their own.

It was, of course, a miserable childhood the happy childhood is hardly worth your while. Worse than the ordinary miserable childhood is the miserable Irish childhood, and worse yet is the miserable Irish Catholic childhood.

As the autobiography opens, Frank describes his parents meeting and marrying in New York and eventually moving back to Ireland with their four sons. He characterizes his as a typical miserable Irish Catholic childhood, complete with drunken father and browbeaten mother. He tells of Limericks interminable rain, which spread disease through the town.

Frank backtracks and tells the story of his mother and fathers lives before the birth of their children. Malachy McCourt, Franks father, grows up in the north of Ireland, fights for the Old IRA, and commits a crime (unnamed by the narrator) for which a price is placed on his head. Malachy escapes to America to avoid being killed. After indulging his drinking habit in the States and in England for many years, he returns to Belfast, where he drinks tea and waits to die.

Angela Sheehan, Franks mother, grows up in a Limerick slum. She is named after the Angelus (midnight bells rung to honor the New Year), because she was born as the bells rang. Her father drops her baby brother on his head, and runs off to Australia. Ab Sheehan, Angelas brother, is never the same after being dropped, but Frank recalls that the whole of Limerick loved him.

Angela later emigrates to America, where she meets Malachy, who had just served three months in jail for the theft of a truck carrying buttons. Angela becomes pregnant by Malachy, who is coerced into marrying Angela by her cousins, the McNamara sisters. He plots to escape the marriage by moving to California, but foils his own plot by spending his train fare at the pub. The McNamara sisters mock Malachy for his strange ways and intimate that he has a streak of the Presbyterian in him. Frank is born and baptized, and is joined a year later by another brother, Malachy. A couple of years later, Angela gives birth to boy twins, Eugene and Oliver.

The rest of the chapter describes the difficulties and the joys of Franks early childhood in New York. Frank remembers playing with Malachy in the park near their home, and listening to his fathers patriotic songs and folk tales. He recalls particularly liking one story about a great Irish warrior named Cuchulain, and jealously guarding this story as his own. Even though Franks father loves his children, he constantly drinks, and loses jobs. Oftentimes, he spends his wages at the pub, and as a result Angela has no money to buy dinner for her children. Malachy stops drinking for a while once Angela has a beautiful daughter, Margaret, but by the end of the chapter Margaret has died. The death of her daughter drives Angela into a state of depression and causes her to neglect her children. Despite the best attempts of two of the McCourts neighbors, Mrs. Leibowitz and Minnie McAdorey, the situation does not improve. The women decide to inform Delia and Philomena McNamara of their cousins troubles. The McNamara sisters write to Angelas mother asking for money to pay for the McCourts passage back to Ireland. The chapter ends with four year-old Frank watching as his mother vomits over the side of the ship, and the Statue of Liberty pulls away from him.

Analysis

The authors wry humor undercuts the bleakness of his early years, as he jokes that a happy childhood is hardly worth your while. In spite of the hardship he endured, Frank remembers the occasional happiness of his childhood in New York, playing with boys from the neighborhood and listening to his fathers tales of Ireland.

McCourt cuts into the stream of his narrative with snippets of folk songs and old Irish tales, so that Ireland seems eternally present in the world of New York. The theme of telling tales, and the impact tales have on Frank, returns throughout the novel. The narrator comes to depend on these imaginative excursions to provide insulation from the cold realities of his life. Frank is fascinated by Freddie Leibowitzs tale of Samson, and is highly protective of his own, and all the neighboring childrens, right to individual stories. For instance, he scolds his brother Malachy for singing a song that Frank thinks belongs to Maisie MacAdorey. Also, Franks tale of Cuchulain unites him with his father. The narrator suggests that in a world where material possessions are scarce, ownership of songs and stories is crucial.

Malachys alcoholismreferred to only half-jokingly as the Curse of the Irishruns through this chapter. Frank recalls only one period of respite from Malachys incessant drinking the few weeks following Margarets birth. The happiness of the McCourt family around this time is poignant when contrasted with their subsequent depression over the babys death. Angela, until this point a gritty, loving, and responsible mother, is made miserable by the death. Food brought by kind neighbors becomes a solace to Frank in his physical and emotional state of need. However, even as he relishes Mrs. Leibowitzs soup, the boy wishes that his baby sister could be there to enjoy it too. Such details shape our reaction to Frank as much as they inform us of past events. The protagonist comes across as loving, intelligent, and deeply sensitive to the emotions of those around him.

McCourt conveys his childhood impressions of his New York with sensitivity and humor, while remaining true to the language and the sentiments of a four year- old boy. For example, McCourt describes his twin brothers diapers as shitty, and includes all the silly jokes he can recall sharing with his brother Malachy. This results in a tone that is both knowing and naïve. Please note that this sample paper on Angela's ashes, review of Chap I is for your review only. There is a vast difference between those people known as traditionalist and those known as progressives.Traditionalist hold what are known as "traditional beliefs"; they are conservative, religious, older, and patriotic.Progressives are somewhat of the opposite. They are much more liberal and believe in cultural relativism; religion or patriotism does not bind them because they are a bit more free-spirited.If I were to label myself as one or the other, I would most likely be a progressive. When looking over their views on issues like family values, religion, homosexuality, and other problems, I agreed more with their side.

When discussing the issue of family values, traditionalists believe in the whole one mother, one father, and .5 children family. The nuclear family is their ideal family. They do not believe in divorce or out-of-wedlock births. However, I believe in the progressive lifestyle. They believe in a personal lifestyle, meaning you can live how you want to live.If a woman wants to raise her child up in a one-parent household, she should be able to do so.If a couple gets married yet decides that they do not want children, then they are entitled to do so.

In terms of religion, traditionalists heavily believe in prayer in school. They believe that prayer in school will teach their children about morals and the difference between right and wrong.I believe if parents want to teach that to their children, then send them to a religious school. It is true that prayer might teach morals to children, but what about those children who do not practice a religion, who do not believe in prayer, or who do not believe in a god? Their rights as children and students should be protected. That is what the progressives believe.Prayer and religion should be left at home and at church/temple, not in schools. The belief of church and state must be separate is one of the core beliefs in this country. We cannot let our lives be run by a religion because that is what separates us from other counties in the world.

Homosexuality is one of the biggest issues raised in today's diverse society.Traditionalist believe that homosexuality is morally and religiously wrong. They argue that in the Bible, God and Jesus cast-off the homosexuals and treated them as sinners.Progressives, like myself, strongly oppose to that.No one should be treated differently because of his or her sexual preference. Moreover, if God has to do with any of this, then it is known that God loves all his children unconditionally, without question.Traditionalists constantly believe that homosexuality is a "disease" and that is contagious.Even some right-winged traditionalists believe that God gave gays AIDS as a way to punish them. That is quite possibly one of the worse arguments that I have ever heard.

On the issues of other problems (i.e. homelessness, teen pregnancy, etc.) I agree with the traditionalist on this issue. They believe that most of our problems in America is due to the fact that we are poorly educated in many areas of life and living.Progressives believe that it is because of inequality in the workplace, at home, and in schools.Inequality is a big factor, no doubt, but I believe that lack of education takes a bigger piece of the blame.Los Angeles County school districts were one of the worst-performing academic districts in the country.Americans, moreover Californians, must do something to change that.

In closing, traditionalists and progressives are on bipolar extremes.Rarely do their beliefs overlap one another's.however, being a traditionalist or a progressive is horribly wrong.I believe that not taking one side or the other is a worst thing. If you do not have beliefs or morals to believe in, then it seems as if you are lost or without faith in something.

How do the concepts learned relate to real life?

It was very interesting learning and listening to all the material discussed in class last Tuesday. Most of the information covered was new to me, but easily related into a real life situation. I'm not sure if you'd like for me to discuss concepts learned from the text or from class, so I'll try to combine them together. In most real life situations it's very useful and helpful to distinguish the advantages from the disadvantages in every alternative you come across. In decision-making, it's easy to make your mind up when looking at everything on paper, rather than juggling it around in your head.

How do they relate to your job?

After watching the video I was shocked to learn of all the aftereffects that occurred in the government, schools, and business world when they were separated from the core beliefs and practices of the early presidents, and forefathers. It was evident that as soon as Christian practices were seen as unfair and unjust in a free country, things started to plummet very rapidly. I can see the changes in my job atmosphere by the way people treat each other and are always looking out for number one.

How to they relate to how the United States operates?

Unfortunately it relates to the United States' operation very closely. It's clear for me to see that this country was founded on the Christianity belief and values, so when those core foundation blocks are taken away or weakened in some way everything that was built on that foundation is affected. It amazes me that people can read the Declaration of Independence and not see the Christian value and coincidence.

How do the concepts relate to biblical principles?

Well, economic principles such as the choices one has to make, as well as the alternatives one has to choose from, and positive economics are all related to biblical principles in one way or another. Wisdom is highly spoken of in the book of Proverbs and many other places in the Bible, so it's obvious that economic principles relate to biblical principles. If one has wisdom, than he or she will be able to make wise choices, and choose life changing, fulfilling alternatives, or at lest learn to do so after practice and error.

Faerod Silvertree, Baron of the Isle of Silvertree, sat in his private chambers sipping a goblet of wine.He felt a small tweak at the back of his brain. When all at once a great rumble shook the palace. The chandelier shook, fell from the roof and shattered, scattering a fine layer of crystal over everything in the room. The walls and floor, made of magnificent, centuries old stone, shook and cracked. There was then an immense wave of heat from the east side of the palace, the direction of Lady Embra's residence.

Faerod stood and threw his glass across the room, causing it to shatter in a brilliant display of glass and blood red wine.He grabbed his robe, wrapped it around his large body, and pulled the chord to summon his guards. They were already on their way to his chambers, they were there almost instantaneously.Twenty of the Baron's best private guards piled, their boots crunching on the shattered crystal, into his room and lined up across from him, the Capitan stood forward,

"Your orders Sir?"

"What do you know so far?" Faerod blared at him.

"The Mage reports that Lady Embra's life force seems to have been severed from the castle. Her chambers seem to have exploded from inside out, by a magickal source we cannot yet identify. It may have been cast by her or at her," the Captain detailed.

Well, what are you waiting for? Get over there and find out what the hell is going on.Find out what condition she is in, if she is injured, or dead or what, okay?! And nobody can get off, or on this island, for that matter, without me or the mage knowing. So find out what the hells going on," Baron Faerod roared, "NOW!"

The guards filled out of the room, and trooped down the hall.Faerod poured himself another glass of wine in a new glass from the silver pitcher. Then he strode over to his balcony and stepped out.He looked over to where Lady Embra resided.Pure destruction greeted his eyes.Where her room had been, was now a gaping hole in the palace.A smoking pile of rubble.Faerod knew that had his daughter been in her room at the time of the explosion, she would no longer be alive, but he couldn't help think that maybe, this was no accident and that Lady Embra was far away at the time.

The room was silent, but in ruins. The heat was almost too much for the guards. The fires were eating up all the oxygen. They ran out of the room gasping for air.The other guards were waiting outside with water, and the mage.He was frowning. As the captain's best man gulped down water then splashed some on his face, he looked at the mage and asked,

"Sir, what's the matter?"

"This magick that I'm sensing,……it's not right……..It feels like……a caged animal set loose.Like a tended fire allowed to rage. This magick is wild yet, I recognise it. I must go, and meditate on this." The mage walked off, and disappeared. The Captain of the guards looked after him then said,

"There is nothing here.Any evidence of what happened here was obviously blasted away, at the same time as everything else.I'm going to report to the Baron, and ask him if he has any idea who would want to do this to his daughter,"

"Right, and do you want us to keep searching here?" said the Captain's best man.

"No, start to try to put the fires out, and when I get back we can start to clean this mess up.I will have some servants sent to help," the captain stated then he walked off down the hall that the mage walked down, but he didn't disappear.

The Captain was waiting in the Baron's chambers, with servants scuttling around everywhere trying to clean the broken shards of crystal off all the furniture, for the Baron to finish his bath. There was a servant scrubbing at the wine stain in the stone, trying in vain to make it come out.The Captain walked over to the servant and said,

"There is a large rug in the next room, that room is not in use right now, nor will it be for a long time I think.Go into that room and get that rug.It will be getting colder soon with winter coming, so he will want more rugs anyway.Place the rug over that stain. If he asks why you put it in now, instead of in a few weeks like you normally would, tell him that it was my idea, because I had heard it would be a particularly bitter winter this year." The servant stood up, bowed, and said,

"Thank you Sir, I don't think that stain will ever come you.Thank you Sir." And he scuttled off, signalling for three others to go with him.Just then Faerod finished in his bath and dressed in his robe, still dripping, he walked into his room an fairly dumped his large self in a massive velvet chair. He poured himself a glass of wine, ordered a servant to rub his feet, and only then did he acknowledge the Captains presence.

"Well Captain, what have you got for me? Any sign of my useless daughter?" Faerod asked.

"No sign Sir, she seems to have just clean disappeared. And there are no clues in the room, we cannot find a thing. It is all just a burning hole.Absolutely nothing there Sir, but the mage said he could sense a type of Magick, a wild but familiar magick.I wanted to know if you know of anyone magickal who would want to hurt, or kill Lady Embra?"

"I know of may people who would want to do many things to all of the Silvertrees but I do not believe that she is dead.I believe that she was kidnapped. That she was forced to teleport herself, and that a spell was cast on her so that she could only go to a certain place. What do you think?"

"Me sir? Well, I guess that could be what happened. But who would do that?

"There are a few people I guess. There is always the same old people, but I would say that the highest possibility would be Baron Warilla from across the ranges, but he is in a feud with a few of his Lords right now, something to do with lands rights.I can't think of anybody else who would want to hurt her right now."

"Okay, think hard sir, are you sure, not even someone who has a slight tiff with her or may be thinks the Silvertree house owes them something.Anybody at all."

"Well, there were these two men. They had just come back from the crusades, fighting for me.I invited all of my men to a large party. These two men turned up, drunk and dishevelled. They started ranting and raving about debts to be paid, and how they would claim their own.I put it out of my mind then, but come to think of it now, one of them did have slight magickal abilities and with training and the right objects he could have done this easily. That's it! I want those two men found now! I want them bought to me and tortured until they give me my daughter, and if they won't tell me, I will have them hung, drawn and quartered."

"Okay sir, I will send troops into the village at once." The Captain said at once, "and if you don't mind sir, I would like to go with them,"

"Do as you please, just bring me those two men."

Faerod Silvertree sat on his balcony and watched as his personal guards, headed by his Captain and his Best man, rode out of the castles interior and down the road towards the village. He finished his breakfast and went inside to get dressed for the day.

The day passed without much notice, the food was extra spicy, his room was extra warm. All he could do was wait for his guards to get back from town with news. Night had come and he was sitting in his chambers sipping a glass of mulled wine. There was a knock on the door. The Baron stood and answered the door.

"Yes, who is it?" The Baron asked before he opened the door

"The Captain of the guards and Best man.We are reporting from our search in the town." The Baron opened the door and walked back to his seat. The Captain closed the door behind him and his Best man and they stood to attention,

"Well, what have you got to report? I have been waiting around all day for you," the Baron growled.

"We searched the town inside out and upside down, but we cannot find the two young men you described, it seems they went missing the day of Lady Embra's accident, and haven't been seen since. We have a band of men out looking for them now," the Captain reported.

"Right then, you may leave now.I wish to get some sleep." The Baron fairly dismissed the Captain and his Best man, and ignored them till they left the room.He then stood shrugged off his robe and went to bed.He was presently asleep, where he sleep peacefully.

The next morning the guards had come back from search. They had some news, and they reported to the captain.

"Captain sir, we found the two men, and they did indeed have the Lady Embra with them. But it was by her own wish. She had cast a spell on her room so that at the exact time she left the palace grounds her chambers would explode, and cause a distraction so that the Baron would not notice her leaving. She paid the two young men to have the outburst at the party and she also paid them to shelter her once she was out of the palace until her lover came for her."

"Is that all?" the Captain inquired.

"Yes sir, shall we report to the Baron now?" they asked.

"NO! I will do that you have no need to concern yourself. You have been out all night, go and get a meal and get some rest.I will deal with the Baron," the Captain dismissed, them and waved them in the direction of the kitchen. The Captain then headed towards the Barons chambers. As he arrived, he could hear the Baron roaring at one of his servants for making his bath water too hot.

"….You incompetent little swine!! I will beat you to a.." The Captain knocked on the door.Faerod's roaring ceased, and he said, "Come in." The Captain opened the door and as he stepped in he noticed a servant scuttle out behind him as the Baron shot him a glance that could freeze a fire. "Well, what news do you have for me?! Have they found Embra yet?"

"Yes sir they have." The Captain said shortly.

"Well man, out with it where is she? Disobedient teenager!!" The Baron growled.

"Well sir, we found the men but there whereabouts had nothing to do with that of Lady Embra's.They were at a family gathering that happens every year. They had forgotten that event at the party, and apologise sincerely if that event caused you any worry. As for the Lady Embra, we searched the rubble under her window and we found her body.It seems she had just realised the extent of her powers and she had gone too far.The Mage determined that for us, with his scrying. We would like to organise a memorial service through the town, so that the lesser can pay their respects to the House of the Silvertree."

"Really she's dead…..A memorial service you say, so that the lesser can pay their respects to the House of the Silvertree.Yes.I like that idea.Organise the memorial service.I don't want to see the body.Just throw it into the kitchen fireplace, and start cleaning up her chambers.I want to start rebuilding right away."

"Yes sir.And Sir?" The Captain said.

"Yes, what is it now?" the Baron said angrily.

"I would like to ask for relief of my services. So that I may travel back to my homeland and live out my life with my family." The Captain asked.

"As you wish but find a replacement before you laeve.I don't want to be left out on a limb just because you want to go all sentimental on me, is that understood?"

"Yes, sir.Will do.Thank you sir."

"Leave me now.I want to be alone." The Baron turned his back on him then, and walked out onto his balcony. The Captain grinned to himself and walked out the door.As he shut the door behind him he whispered quietly, "I will be by your side soon my love, soon…"

AN ESSAY EXPLORING PLOT STRUCTURING DEVICES IN

FRANCIS SCOTT FITZGERALD'S "OUTSIDE THE CABINET-MAKER'S"

Francis Scott Fitzgerald (186-140) was born in St. Paul, Minnessota, in a conventional middle-western Irish family. Educated in several Catholic schools and at Princeton University he decided to seek perfection in writing and became famous overnight with his first novel "This Side of Paradise" (10). Latter he married Zelda Sayress, a Southern belle. So she became Scott's both beloved wife and the "raw material" for his writings. A decade of their married life spent in traveling, grand parties and big spending. They are seen as representatives of the "Jazz Age", that period enjoyed by rich young Americans in the 10s. His most famous novels "The Beautiful and the Damned" (1), and "The Great Gatsby" (15) are set in this atmosphere, where fragility and unhappiness are always just below the glittering surface. "Tender is the Night" (14) earned him the stature of the first chronicler of the "Jazz Age". After a nervous breakdown Fitzerald spent his last few years working as a scriptwriter in Hollywood, where he died of a heart attack. In his short stories "Flappers and Philosophers" (10), "Tales of the Jazz Age" (1), "All the Sad Young Men" (15), "Taps at Reveille" (15) Fitzgerald is a realist and one of the finest postwar American novelist of manners too.

At first, Fitzgerald's "Outside the Cabinet-Maker's" plot structuring devices seem not being so simply. Though the narrative is easy to follow and events are arranged chronological. The main character is "a man". He is making up a story for his little six year old daughter in order not to be bored of waiting for "the lady" outside the cabinet-maker's. Everything takes place in just an hours or less. This waiting outside is only a frame for a skillful and powerful plot. The masterly control of structure is shown through an interesting effect coming from the way Fitzgerald makes reality and fiction co-operate with each other.

Actually, we may say that the structure of the story and plot are inseparable related. The chosen structure of the whole story helps to reveal the plot and, vice verse, the plot of the story is revealed by the chosen structure. The beginning of a climax (or the rising action) of this story coincidence with the man's decision to make up and tell the fairy tale to his daughter. In other words, we may divide the main plot into a smaller subplot, which is very clear the fight between good ("Princess") and evil ("Ogre"). Though the climax is introduced at the end of the subplot and in a form of the man's inner conflict between aspiring to enter the fairy world and bitter understanding of impossibility to do that. The man's returning into the real world with real dreams is perhaps expected and logical way in which the climax is resolved.

So, the main plot consists of inner man's conflict between the ability to look into the real world through the eyes of a child and the impossibility to enter this world. The qualities that help the man to make up a "mystery playing before the child's eyes" are strong love of the daughter, rich spiritual inner world, his knowing of children psychology, being him a good story teller and ability to improvise.

His strong love of the daughter is shown several times in the story when the man, while making up a fairy tale, declares, "I love you" to his daughter. Though the little girl doesn't feel any particular strong emotion at that time. She answers him either "politely" or "abstractedly". Such nice relationship between the father and the daughter is actually pretty rare nowadays and usually you can hear such words from the mother, but not from the father.

His rich spiritual world and knowing child's psychology are evident in the rising action of the story, when the man in order not to be bored starts creating a fairy tale to his daughter using outside material. He absolutely knows how and what evokes interest of a child. That's why he makes up a fairy tale, but not an adventure or a detective story, though they both evoke interest too. It should also be noticeable that the man himself isn't so interested in the story he makes up (as he yawns several times while telling the story).

Another qualities that help the man to create fairy world out of reality is that the man is a good story teller and is perfect at improvising. He is able to fit what happens in reality into the story he is making up. We can see this in a place where the man notices that the room is obscured by curtains and shutters. After this observation he builds up the idea that something mysterious is going on in the room. The same ability he applies to convent what is happening in the street into events or characters in the story.

All these qualities help him to open the fairy world to his daughter where good fights with evil and always win "good fairies". But despite the man's ability to amuse his child, he himself isn't anymore able to enter this fairy world with her. And perhaps one of the strongest and the saddest point in all the plot is that inner understanding of the man that it's impossible to return to the child's world, believe in fairy tales and the overcoming fight of good. There are no more princesses, fairies, ogres, kings and queens in the world of grown-ups.

This brief description of the elements of plot structuring devices can only hint at the power and effect of the story. The man is a sensitive, intelligent, rational protagonist, who deeply inside his heart understands impossibility of seeing and living in the fairy world. It is a touching description of his attempt to share his daughter's world (though ultimately he cannot) and to express his love.

Besides, the story is a reflection of Fitzgerald's love for his own little girl, Scottie Fitzgerald. Other stories that feature the father daughter relationship include "Babylon Revisited" (11) and "On Schedule" (1), but "Outside the Cabinet-Maker's" most economically captures the emotion.

Through John Donne's poems the Sunne rising and Good Friday 161. Riding westward, it is highly evident how they are representative of his other works of poetry through the recurring themes of love and religion. The representation is also seen through the use of similar techniques used throughout his works such as simile, metaphor, hyperbole, conceit and the use of personal tone.

These poems can be read through several various perspectives, particularly through the perspectives of a feminist and from a patriarchal perspective.

Donne's overall work consisted largely of Love Poetry such as The Sunne Rising and Religious Poetry such as Good Friday 161. Riding Westward. These two poems also consist of various techniques that are also utilised in other works of Donne. Through these recurring techniques and constant themes of love and religiousness seen in Donne's body of work, we see how the poems The Sunne Rising and Good Friday 161. Riding Westward are representative of Donnes overall.

Personal tone is used in Donnes love poetry, which enhances the dramatic quality of Donnes poetry and allows Donne to speak directly to the audience. It is seen in the Sunne Rising throughout the poem where there is a dominant sense of the poet "I could eclipse and cloud them with a wink." The personal tone is also utilised in another of Donnes romantic poems, Loves Alchymie, where authority is gained though the use of 'I' "I have lov'd…"

In Valediction Forbidding Mourning, Donne compares natural phenomena to a love relationship, the "sigh tempests" relating to the element of air, and the "tear floods" to the element of water. He uses this hyperbole to demand that his lover remain stoic and resist any show of emotion upon his departure. Similarly in Sunne "I could eclipse and cloud them" juxtaposed with "with a winke" adds to the conceit in this poem.

Alliteration is employed in The Sunne Rising through the line "Thou Sunne art halfe as happy 'as wee". This is done to give the statement a snide tone, which could almost be seen as mocking. Alliteration such as "bracelet of bright hair" is used to a different effect in the poem The Relique, where it helps to maintain the visual impact of the imaginery scene being described.

As in Donnes love poetry, personal tone is also used in his religious poetry. In Good Friday 161. Riding Westward the personal tone is put into use to add authority to the piece and "…where I begunne." Personal tone is largely evident in another of Donnes religious poems, A Hymne to God the Father, where the poem is concluded with the line 'I have no more."

Metaphor is another technique used in Donnes religious and overall work. Hymn to God, My God, in My Sickness the controlling metaphor for the poem the human body as a map and the physicians have therefore become map-readers. In Good Friday the metaphorical connection comes from the stressing between the physical and spiritual which links God's death to the setting sun. In this sense the crucifixion becomes the microcosm of the world.

In Donnes Holy Sonnet XIV the relationship between the image and the subject is of great importance, Donne exploits the technique of paradox in order to successfully show the great importance "Except you enthral me, never shall I be free, Nor ever chaste, except you ravish me." The paradoxical notion that God who is 'selfe life, must dye' is explored through emotive imagery in Good Friday, which highlights that witnessing such a death made 'his footstoole crack, and the Sunne winke".

In the 150s, at the time when John Donne produced his Songs and Sonnets, the Petrarchan tradition had already had several centuries of undeniable rule over amorous poetry and literature in general. Donne probably thought this rule should come to an end, for his sonnets rudely, and even cynically changed the concepts concerning love and women. His love poetry is best valued when compared to the very strong at the time Petrarchan concept. The most scandalous of his ideas is probably how he viewed women.

All in all, John Donne managed to step aside from a centuries old tradition in literature that went on even throughout his lifetime. Namely his audacity to violate the conventions, to try something new made a very special place for his works in the English renaissance. Not only that; to a great extent he foretold the upcoming women's struggle against sexism and more of less set the ground for breaking the rules of the Petrarchan tradition.

If you look around, you can see a racial mix of people.Asians, Hispanics, Caucasian and Black. After the Civil War, many countries were chaotic financially. Oscar Handlin stated, ¡°Once I thought to write a history of the immigrants in America. Then I discovered that the immigrants were italicize for American history¡± (Kennedy, 64). Like Oscar Handlin said, many people from various countries moved to the United States and it encouraged American Industry's development. In the constitutional convention, James Madison noted, ¡°That part of America which has encouraged them (the immigrants) has advanced most rapidly in population, agriculture and the arts¡± (Kennedy, 6).

In the nineteenth century, the rate of immigration increased. The population was 150,000 in the 180's, 1.7 million in the 1840's, .8 million in the 1870's, 5. million in the 1880's, and increased up to 8.8 million in the 1st decade of the twentieth century. (Kennedy, 17)

Many Irish immigrated to the United States between 180 and 10.Most of them were farmers. They were the first to endure racism discrimination and unfair working condition in the land named America but they worked hard at railroad construction, mills and coalmines. As the years passed and new generations were born, their settlement was put into the better condition to live fairly as an immigrant. At last they established the Catholic Church and helped to establish some organizations. There's no part of our nation that has not been touched by our immigrant background. (Kennedy, 18) ¡°Everywhere immigrants have enriched and strengthened the fabric of American life¡±(Kennedy, 66).

As Walt Whitman said, ¡° These states are the amplest poem, here is not merely a nation but a teeming Nation of nations¡± (Kennedy, ).

Between 180 and 10, six million Germany people came to the United States. It was the period of the greatest migration from Europe to the United States.German immigration developed industrial enterprises and educational system. For example, German farmers helped to farm the New West and to cultivate the Mississippi Valley. In addition, the fields of lumbering, food-processing, brewing, steel-making, electrical engineering, piano-making, railroading, printing, scientific farming, crop rotation and soil conservation could develop the various fields of American industry.Furthermore, they introduced the school for children and promoted the concept of the state-endowed university. (Kennedy, 5)

Scandinavian immigration started with Swedes migration first.Between 1840 and 10, about 1. million Swedes came to the United States. The other Scandinavian, Danes, Finns, Icelanders and Norwegians reached Swedes' peak in the 1880's.The Scandinavians settled in various areas.Swedes settled in Wisconsin at first and extended to Michigan, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, Iowa and Kansas. Some of the Norwegians drove west to the Dakotas, Oregon and Washington to settle.Norwegian immigration to the United States is estimated at 840,000 and Danes at 50,000.The Scandinavians played an important role in the United States school, educational system and contributed to the educational system in a variety of ways. Also, Swedes, Danes and Norwegians were skillful and talented in some fields so they helped developing an American Industry, including agriculture. (Kennedy, 55)

Toward the end of the nineteenth century, large numbers of Italians, Russians, Poles, Czechs, Hungarians, Rumanians, Bulgarians, Austrians and Greeks arrived to the United States.Over 5 million Italians came between 180 and 16.Most large cities were called ¡®Little Italys' or ¡®Little Polands' by 110.By 16, almost 10,000 Czechs had migrated to this country. (Kennedy, 57-58) The Japanese and Chinese brought their gentle dreams to the West Coast. The estimated immigration of Japan is 8,087 in 107 and the estimated immigration of China is 411,585 in 188. (Kennedy, 85)

America has often been called the land of immigrants.I can say the statement ¡°We are a nation of immigrants¡± is historically true and evidenced by facts on record. Also the dreams such as the ¡°American Dream¡± have a positive function for a society because it attracts immigrants who help to develop America and keep it growing economically and in other fields. Since immigrants to America had existed back then and it still does, American dream had existed and it still exists.

II.

CODE HERO

Down these mean streets a man must go who is not himself mean, who is neither tarnished nor afraid... He is the hero, he is everything. He must be a complete man and a common man and yet an unusual man. He must be, to use a rather weathered phrase, a man of honor, by instinct, by inevitability, without thought of it, and certainly without saying it. He must be the best man in his world and a good enough man for any world.

--Raymond Chandler

A code hero is defined as a man's man. He is courageous and honorable, and while he is the center of many women's attention, he merely sees women as objects of lust and pleasure. He lives life the right way and will not comply with evil. Finally, a code hero will face death bravely, but once he does so, he must do it again and again, constantly proving himself. He is not afraid of death, but knows life after death is nonexistent. Hemingway made the code hero famous by including it in most of his major novels and short stories. Hemingway shows this hero through characterization and plot.

In The Old Man and the Sea, Santiago is the code hero. Hemingway's characterization of him reveals this nature. When Santiago was out at sea on his skiff, he was longing for company. He thought to himself, "No one should be alone in their old age" (48). Following the trait of a code hero, Santiago thinks this because as he ages, he knows he is getting closer to death every day. When he is alone, this is what he thinks about, so he wants his loved ones to be by him to keep his mind off death and focus on living. When Santiago was trying to catch the marlin, his fishing line left a deep cut on his right hand. Rather than allow it to hinder his performance, he says, "It is not bad…And pain does not matter to a man" (84). This statement gives Santiago the man's man image, which goes hand in hand with being a code hero. He will not let pain affect him in his endeavors because he does not want to let the fish beat him. He wants to be the champion of the fight, which is a characteristic of a man's man. After he kills the first shark the attacked his marlin, he was feeling depressed because the shark took some of the meat off his marlin. However, he did not let himself lose. He accepted his small loss by saying, "But man is not made for defeat…A man can be destroyed but not defeated" (10). His acceptance of his loss and his will to win the war dub him a worthy code hero because it shows his endurance and courage in times of desperation. He lost the battle, but he was determined to win the war.

Certain parts of the plot of The Old Man and the Sea advance Hemingway's portrayal of Santiago as a code hero. After Santiago hooked the marlin, he realized that it was much larger than he had bargained for. This put him in a bad situation since he was by himself trying to catch such a giant fish. Most men in this predicament would have cut the line and searched for a new catch, but Santiago could not let himself lose. He was in such pain from the tight line and so tired from the beating sun, but he, "tried not to think but only to endure" (46). Because of this, he was able to catch the huge beast. This compliments his strong endurance in critical situations, yet another telltale sign of a code hero. This proves that when the going gets tough, Santiago can find a way to get it done. Every time Santiago goes against a large fish, he puts his life on the line in order to catch it. When he encountered a hungry shark on his voyage home, he knew he would have to do it again.

The thousand times that he had proved it meant nothing. Now he was proving it again. Each time was a new time and he never thought about the past when he was doing it. (66).

Like a code hero, Santiago needs to continue to stare into the eyes of death and overcome it. Although he has done it before, he must constantly prove himself a hero and a survivor by doing this. Part of the plot where Santiago thrives as a code hero is near the end when he is bombarded at night by four sharks. Armed with only a short knife, he somehow kills off all four man-eating beasts (10). These occurrences of endurance and courage cannot all be coincidence. Santiago is portrayed as a true code hero to definition.

Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a book of adventures that had brought the two main characters of different races together. Both characters had come a long way. Both would not have never made it this far without the help and support of each other. As they journeyed through their adventures, they had come to complicated circumstances, that had later created this bond of friendship that could never be broken and this bond had help both achieve their goal. The fact that Twain felt a sense of guilt, and the fact that he felt that Jim was Huck’s guidance was the reason that he brought the two main characters together in such a way. While Mark Twain brings these two young main characters together as friends, of difference race, there were flaws in his writing that had brought this story into a big discussion.

Twain felt guilty. At the beginning, Huck did not realize the importance of Jim.He never looked at things from Jim’s point of view. The time when Huck and Jim had lost each other in the fog and of how Huck accused of Jim of gotten drunk, Jim’s reactions had made Huck felt this sense of guilt. Jim said to Huck, â€Dat truck dah is trash; en trash is what people is dat puts dirt on de head er dey fren’s en makes ‘em ashamed.” This guilt was the guilt that Twain felt.If Huck have not felt this way, then it would have made Twain look like he was racist, and that he did not care about blacks.People would not have respect for him.It was obvious that Twain was just trying to lessen his guilt by at least taking into consideration of other people’s feeling, regardless of their race and making Huck feel this sense of guilt, and think second about Jim as his friend.Twain had to make Huck feel that way in order to bring these characters together.

Huck was confused and lost both physically and mentally.Should he turn Jim in or not? At the same time he could have gotten the $00 reward.Twain could have made Huck turn Jim in.But instead, he made Huck feel so guilty.Huck felt so depressed at that moment, that nothing mattered to him anymore besides for his conscience.Furthermore, Huck would lie his way to prevent others from turning Jim in.Like the time when Jim had a high fever, he would go get help, but he would not let them go near him and say that it was his pap that had chicken pox.Twain just wanted to show that white and blacks can be friends because of the fact that he felt guilty of how Huck treated Jim in the beginning. He made Jim’s presence at the raft really important to Huck, so that it would make others look at Twain as a sincere man with a heart.

Twain tried to show that Jim was Huck’s guidance.Without Jim, Huck was lost. The time when Huck discovered that Jim was sold to the Phelps by the pretend to be King and Duke, this sense of guilt came back to Huck.â€I’d see him standing my watch on top of his’n, stead of calling me, so I could go on sleeping.” Should he let Miss Watson know that Jim had been sold to the Phelps? Every time when Huck came to this situation of whether to turn Jim in, he felt depressed again. He didn’t have to feel that way. Twain was just trying to prove to the audience that everyone needs guidance when growing up and everyone needs to grow out of it’s childish ways, so that readers would view Twain as a deep and caring person, that understands the importance of friendship, regardless of their race.It was one of the ways that Twain was trying to show the readers that the friendship between Huck and Jim was very strong.

There were reasons for Twain’s flaws while trying to bring the two main characters together.Twain felt guilt, of how he treated Jim in the beginning of the story, and he knew that Jim was Huck’s guidance. From the time Huck and Jim had found each other at the island, they both had realized the need of each other and that life was not important without each other by one another’s side.Without Jim, Huck would still probably be lost both emotionally and physically.Without Huck, Jim would have been sold out of the state and would have never obtained his freedom.Together and through the long complicated and the fun-filled journey, they had created a strong bond of friendship forever of a white young man with a black young man.The flaws was the only way to bring these two main characters of different racist together and was a way to lessen Twain’ guilt.

Did one ever want to live in New York? What about working on Wall Street? One might prefer not to after reading, "Bartleby, the Scrivener," by Herman Melville. This short story is not only about life on Wall Street but also how one should treat others less fortunate then oneself.

The main character is an elderly lawyer who never takes risky deals or draws attention to himself. His personality is similar to that of a shy turtle. He also provides us with the story in the first person point of view, introducing the strange Bartleby.

Bartleby is "a motionless young man…pallidly neat, pitiably respectable, incurably forlorn." The lawyer hires Bartleby to be a copier, but after awhile, Bartleby says he would "prefer not to" do his work. Then the lawyer finds out that Bartleby is living in the office but he feels bad for Bartleby so doesn't say anything. But when Bartleby stops doing his job, he asks Bartleby to leave.

Bartleby does not leave however; he "remained as ever, a fixture in my chamber. Nay-if that were possible-he became still more of a fixture then before." Finally, the main character can take no more and he moves out of the building, instead of just putting a restraining order on Bartleby. The lawyer tries to be kind to Bartleby by giving him a job, letting him live in the office, even after he had fired him, and having patience with him when he says "I prefer not to." This shows that the main character had enough compassion to finally just give up on Bartleby.

Bartleby doesn't leave the building, and the new tenants tell the lawyer that since he left Bartleby behind, he is responsible for him. The lawyer suggests a couple of jobs for Bartleby but he just answers, "I would prefer not to." At last, Bartleby is put in jail for staying in the building where he says he "would prefer not to" eat at all and so Bartleby dies in jail.

The main character owns the building in which the story takes place. "My chambers were up stairs,…at one end, they looked upon the white interior of a spacious skylight shaft…from the other end…my windows commanded an unobstructed view of a lofty brick wall, black by age and everlasting shade." The setting can be a symbol of the ruin let by Wall Street, a useless and deserted edifice. Bartleby himself could be symbolic. His job before he became a copier was "subordinate clerk in the Dead Letter Office at Washington." Bartleby's mind and common sense is like the clerk job…it doesn't exist.

The question presented in the end, is could the narrator or main character have done something else to prevent Bartleby's death? Well first of all who are we as human beings responsible for? Ourselves as well as other or just ourselves and if we are responsible for others, what if they themselves don't want to be helped?

The answer is quite simple. The narrator did everything he could to help Bartleby. He gave him a job, a place to live, and even after he fired him he tried to get him a job and another place to live along with a reasonable salary to take with him. Bartleby simply didn't want to be helped. Bartleby's mind was just blank and was beyond help. Yes, we should help others as much as we can but there are limitations. If one is helping others more then oneself, are you really being much of a help? How can one take care of others when one can't even take care of oneself? One can't, one must just as much as one can to make the world a better place and make people like Bartleby as comfortable as possible. That could be the best way to be towards humanity.
