Personal Thoughts on Honesty

Webster defines honesty as the state of being honest. This definition does not do the word justice. Honesty is a quality rarely found in its complete form. Yet, many people believe they possess it due to their limited use of dishonesty. I believe honesty is a quality that is directly connected to the some of the other coarse foundations. The main two it is connected to are courage and inner coherence.

Honesty is quality that takes courage to have. In a world where everyone is worried about what other people think, and the minority opinion is often criticized the truth is often misplaced. It takes courage to stand up and be completely honest to someone who you know will be upset about it. It takes courage to speak the truth when it could cost you your job or personal relationship. It takes courage to face you and be completely honest about your shortcomings and flaws.

Honesty is also a quality that requires a great deal of inner coherence. A person cannot be honest to the world if he cannot be honest with himself. A person needs a great deal of inner stability and togetherness in order to see the truth much less speak it constantly. Honesty is such a personal quality that it takes a persons entire sense of being to be completely honest, and this is where inner coherence becomes an absolute necessity for honesty to be present.

Webster defines honesty as a refraining from lying, cheating, or stealing. It is such a simple definition for a word that has become increasingly complex in this day and age. I always hear things like, " I lied to protect you, what you don't know won't hurt you, and you can't handle the truth. I believe honesty has become a lost art in our world. I see people constantly rationalizing reason to lie. The reasons are sometimes well-intended and other times purely heinous. I would like more people to realize the importance of honesty at all times.

His psychological are interessests are very typical for him, especially in this short story The Tell-Tale Heart. This story is written in 184.

Summary

The story The Tell-Tale Heart written by Edgar Allan Poe in 184 is told by an mad man - as a first person narrator. This madman describes his plan to kill an old man, althought he is very mad and and mental destroit. Without scruples he planes his crime-action. The narrator describes with lots of details - also with a relish for terror against his victim - this old man in a very wild language.

His insanity is obvious, because he talks in a normal language about his kill - attack .

He kills the man in the end of the story - when he pulls his bed over him. The madman kills him because of his eye - he doesnt like it. This was the real plot of his killing action.

Questions

Does he really think himself mad ?

No, he thinks that he is a normal man - but he isnt. He explained in the story, that he is normal and not crazy - but he his. He has very confuse ideas and he is insanity. His describing are very schizophrenic. He describes his action - like a very normal one, without moral scruples. This shows his schizophrenic relation to his life and to his people.....

Can we accept his deed when we consider his interpretaion the old mans eye as a symbol of evil ?

His insaity is evil - but the eye isnt a symbol of evil, because the man is old and ill - the madman has a problem - because he has no moral scruples or something like that....

The man with the special eye is old an ill - and the narrator a madman - insanity.

What is the real motive for the murder ?

What are the special features of this tale ?

This tale is very crazy, because the narrator is the madman - thats not normal...

An the reader thinks he would be also insanity - because of the fist-person-narrator.

Because of the detailful describtion of hid doing - the reader thinks like him - and this is dangerous, because of the identification with his evil work.....

Interpretation

The narrator is insane, and he knows that - he also belives, that everybody also knows it. But he cant understand and asked at the beginning But why will you say that I am mad ?. He has big mental problems, everybody knows that, if you hear telling him. The author made a short-story, where is very crazy - because of the trivial motive to kill his victim his bad eye. Madmans hearing every evening at the door, of the old, poor man with the bad eye - is same as crazy as his murderer - action to push the bed over him. He thinks, that hes innocence, because he regret nothing. And the madness of the story is, that the people, who read this story thinks also, because of his type of telling...

People, who listen will be unconscious insane ! This modern horror-story is one of the most popular stories of Adgar Allan Poe - and this story is also a refelction of his own live....

All in all has this horror-story no real message, but the listener / reader of this story will be a little be mad - thats an other type of entertainemt !

Essay Question

Why was the German victory at Dunkirk called a â€miracle” by the Allies who lost the battle?

The German victory at Dunkirk was called a miracle by the Allies who lost the battle because of the massive rescue effort that carried an unbelievable 8,000-exhausted soldiers safely to Britain. This battle looked hopeless for the Allied troops to survive as they were cornered onto the beaches of Dunkirk by the German army.

In May of 140, Hitler prepared to attack France after the Scandinavian conquest. The French, expecting a defensive war, built rows of defenses along their border with Germany called the Maginot Line; built to prevent the Germans from invading France. They were completely unprepared for Hitler’s German parachutists that dropped from the skies right over their defense line and German tanks that plowed straight through it.

Lines of these forceful tanks drove Allied troops towards the port of Dunkirk.Germans backed the Allied soldiers against the ocean, leaving thousands of helpless men trapped. While the Germans paused in finishing off the vulnerable army, the British established a rescue operation to save their immovable troops. Many volunteers supported the rescue by providing their private yachts, ferries, lifeboats, and fishing boats to save the soldiers. For 8 days British rescue ships traveled back and forth through the smoke as German artillery pounded Dunkirk’s docks and beaches.

The Battle of Dunkirk looked as if the German army would hopelessly slaughter the Allied soldiers.Fortunately for the pause of the Germans, a rescue was set up to save the Allied troops from certain death. An incredible number of soldiers were saved in a short period of time defying the odds, thus making it known as the Miracle of Dunkirk.

Ralph Waldo Emerson stated that, "A hero is no braver than an ordinary man, but he is brave five minutes longer." This applies to the protagonist in the short story, Gimpel the Fool by Isaac Bashevis Singer. Gimpel is a simple man that does not have supernatural powers but is still a hero. He is one of the most courageous men to exist and he enjoys his "extra five minutes of bravery" that set him apart from his fellow citizens of Frampol because he portrays qualities such as moral values, sacrifice, and courage even though superficially he is thought to be a fool.

Gimpel's positive ethics are seen significantly through his faith in humanity, and his resistance to temptation. Although Gimpel is fooled numerous times by everyone in his town, he continues to believe their every word. This leads the reader to assume that he is gullible, but instead it shows the absolute faith he maintained in his companions. The townspeople kept on sending Gimpel to do absurd tasks and he would do them stating, "Maybe something had happened. What did I stand to loose by looking?" (page 7). Here it is visible that Gimpel upholds a sense of innocence throughout the story, which preserved his faith in humanity. Another occasion is when Gimpel is tempted by the devil in a dream while he slept at the bakery. The devil tells him to urinate in the bread dough for the town since he states, "The whole world deceives you and you ought to deceive the world in your turn" (page 104). Gimpel carries out the evil deed but finally he repents, which illustrates that he is a heroic man. He shows self-possession, confidence, and moral character when he buries the bread since it is challenging to repent from something evil. These qualities of Gimpel's mind and spirit prove that his ideals are constructive and heroic.

The true hero in Gimpel radiates through his exterior when he makes certain sacrifices for his family. Although his children are not his, he slaves at work to provide for them and love them. Gimpel does not even have time to sleep at home on weekdays so he stays at work. One of the sacrifices is when he religiously attends church to pray for his wife while she is in labor. Once the child that is not his is born, he devotes himself to him as seen when he declares, "I began to forget my sorrow. I loved the child madly, and he loved me too" (page ). This love drives Gimpel to go to any extreme to acquire nourishment for his family and sometimes even resorts to theft. This is disclosed when he says, "In the evening I brought her a white loaf as well as a dark one, and also poppyseed rolls I baked myself. I thieved because of her and swiped everything I could lay hands on, macaroons, raisins, almonds, cakes" (page ). This thievery occurs even after Gimpel's wife dies since he continues taking care of the children by bringing them more goods from the bakery. Gimpel does not have an obligation to his children since he is not their father, but the fact that he slaves every day to provide for them and his wife shows the sacrifice that he made for them.

Throughout these times, Gimpel maintains a level of courage that is momentous up to the time he left home and at the end of the story. Gimpel is confident and resolute when he decides to leave his hometown to explore the world for nice people that do not fool him. He became a storyteller for children who called, "'Grandfather tell us a story.' Sometimes they asked for particular stories, and I try to please them" (page 105). To be able to leave his home like this takes extreme bravery since he leaves everything he knows behind him. He is also courageous about death at the end where he mentions that, "Whenever the time comes I will go joyfully. Whatever may be there, it will be real, without complication, without ridicule, without deception" (page 106). This shows the peace that he is at with himself and how he faces dangers such as death with complete composure. At the beginning of the story, Gimpel cared about how the people would react to what he said. At the end of the story, Gimpel overcomes this obstacle and becomes a courageous hero.

Bashevis creates a protagonist that initially appears to be a fool. Gimpel's actions demonstrate that this quality does not accurately describe his personality. The reader is therefore forced to reevaluate his or her ideals on heroism to discover that it can be found in the most unexpected individuals.

People from different ethnic and racial groups have migrated to the united states over a long period of years. That is of course how America was given the name "The Melting Pot." With them they bring their cultures and values, which interact with one another and cause Americas' culture, economy, and politics to be shaped by this through process called assimilation. Assimilation is the process of gradual transformation from minority subculture status to part of the dominant culture. I will discuss how my family arrived to the Cleveland area and also how we assimilated to this country as a family.

Ulysses Everett McGill, Epic Hero or Not?

In folktales, legends, mythology, and even the Bible, people are told stories of men with unimaginable strength. They perform heroic feats and give service to the people they love. In the Old English epic The Odyssey, by Homer, people are enlightened of another such hero. Odysseus, the main character of the epic, is very much an epic hero, as is Ulysses Everett McGill in the movie O' Brother, Where Art Thou?.The movie O Brother, Where Art Thou? is based on The Odyssey by Homer. The epic poem is a story of a journey homeward just as the movie is and both contain several stories evolving from the trips themselves. There are several aspects of the movie that are borrowed from Homer's classic tale. The film O Brother, follows Ulysses Everett McGill on his quest to win back his lovely ex-wife before she marries another man.Everett must reach his wife in time in order to keep from losing her forever. To help accomplish this task, Everett cons two of his fellow inmates into escaping and joining him on his arduous adventure.Everett and his partners have no clue what path their journey is going to take them on.However, the journey that Everett undergoes in the film can be compared closely to the ancient Greek epic, the Odyssey.Although occurring in different time periods, Everett seems to walk the same path as the hero Odysseus once did.

Much like the Odyssey, Everett shows us that a simple journey from point A to point B can be more difficult than one expects.Along the way Everett must overcome certain obstacles, much like the epic hero Odysseus once had to do.Although being a con artist with a huge vocabulary, Everett, is easily outwitted in the movie.Still, his two fellow escapees, Pete and Delmer, follow his supposedly wise lead.

There is an acute awareness and concern about violence and its effects on individuals and society as a whole throughout Europe. Individual security is threatened in everyday life in a wide array of circumstances and places at home, school, work, sports events and in the streets. While violence and the fear of violence affects the quality of life of the entire population, certain groups of people may be perceived as specific targets of violence, e.g. women, children and older persons as well as migrants, refugees and ethnic groups. Patterns and types of threats to individual security, and their causes, need to be identified so that a coherent policy, along with appropriate intervention tools against such threats, can be prepared and applied.

The integrated project Responses to violence in everyday life in a democratic society has been set up to address these widely shared concerns about violence by mobilising the resources of the Council of Europe related to the theme within a three-year period (00 - 004). The primary objective of the project is to help decision-makers and other protagonists concerned in member states to implement consistent policies on awareness raising, prevention and appropriate punitive measures for combating everyday violence. It should be stressed that such policies have to be formulated and applied in a manner which respects human rights and the rule of law. Only then can the objective conditions and subjective feelings about security in Europe be improved on a permanent basis.

The integrated project on responses to violence was launched together with its sister project Making democratic institutions work. Apart from obvious thematic and causal linkages in addressing two major challenges facing European societies, the projects also share several general functions. Both of them concern areas for which comprehensive policy development and standard setting are needed as a priority. The projects also aim to maximise the impact of the work carried out by the Council of Europe and to identify obstacles to the full implementation of its standards in order to propose remedies. Furthermore, they will increase the visibility of the organisation by widely disseminating their findings and results. Finally, the projects contribute to renewing working methods and opening up unnecessary boundaries between departments within the organisation.

In carrying out its tasks, the project on responses to violence relies on the synergies of internal and external partnerships to maximise effects. The different organs and departments of the organisation are pooling their resources to prepare co-ordinated and multi-sectoral responses to everyday violence. Non-governmental organisations, with their wealth of first-hand experience, are closely associated with the project. Co-operation with other international organisations is being sought so that shared aspirations can be realised through common efforts.

Dylan Thomas

Dylan Thomas Final Trip to America Dylan Marlais Thomas was born in Swansea, Wales on October 7, 114. He died November th, 15 in New York City. In only years, Dylan Thomas left an indelible mark on history. Thomas published numerous books of his poetry, plays, short stories, and various other works. He first toured America in early 150, reading at a variety of public forums. This tour was very successful and Thomas fell in love with America, a romance that would bring his end just more than three years later. This first lecture tour of three months was a roaring success, or roaring and a success (Sinclair, 166). Thomas gave great lectures on this tour, but more importantly, he discovered New York City. New York seemed to egg him on (Ferris, ). Dylan grew fond of some of the seedier Irish bars of Third Avenue and particularly…the White Horse Tavern (Sinclair, 164). Dylan was even forced to leave his hotel because of drunkenness (Ferris, ). Thomas had gained a reputation of being a heavy drinker and he wasnt ready to disappoint his American followers. Dylan lived up to his roistering and shocking reputation, while turning in some of his greatest performances as a lecturer (Sinclair, 166). He was loudly applauded, Ferris wrote, His rich voice overcame any problems of meaning. People frequently said that Thomas way of reading made them understand poems for the first time; but it may be under the influence of his voice, the literal meaning of a poem became irrelevant (). After only two readings in New York, Dylan moved on to tour the rest of the country. Thomas moved west stopping in major cities all over America to lecture by day and drink by night. Tales of his growing dependence on alcohol preceded him. The quality of Dylans lectures deteriorated as he moved west on his tour of American bars. For the final five weeks of his visit to America, Thomas returned to New York (Ferris, 48). Dylan described his last two weeks in New York as a liquid, libidinous fortnight (Ferris, 50). Thomas admitted to having three affairs during the trips (Ferris, 50). He left for home on June 1st, 150. When Thomas arrived at his home in Laugharne, Wales he discovered that his trip to America did not prove to be lucrative enough to support his poetry for any extended period of time (Ferris, 5). Being at home, with his wife, Dylan recuperated from the wear and tear of his first tour (Sinclair, 17). He wrote that he had to ruin his health again because he felt so preposterously well. Such were the healing powers of Laugharne - and of love (Sinclair, 175). During this period at home, Dylans father became ill and Dylan was shocked into his last fertile period of writing poetry (Sinclair, 175). By the end of 151, Thomas had agreed to take another lecture tour of America, This time however, his wife Caitlin, having received news of his love affairs on his last tour, insisted on going (Sinclair, 176). This tour went on with moderate drinking by Thomas. Caitlin assisted by spending whatever money Dylan earned. The second and the first trips were very similar in form. Dylan left For Wales on May 15, 15. Thomas returned to Laugharne and his Fathers condition worsened. DJ Thomas died on December 16; Dylans own health was beginning to deteriorate. Years of heavy drinking, heavy smoking, and hard living were beginning to take their toll just two months after his 8th birthday (Ferris, 87). Thomas was suffering from many ailments, several pulmonary in nature (Ferris, 87). Despite all of this, needing money, Thomas agreed to tour America for a third time (Ferris, 88). He left on April 1, 15. Thomas soon began an affair with a woman he was working with named Liz Reitell (Ferris, 8). Dylan was receiving opportunities in America, but was finding it difficult to produce anything at all (Ferris, 1). Reitell and Thomas fell in love and Liz soon became worried about his drinking problem. He fell down a staircase while drunk and broke his arm. Reitell took him to see Dr. Milton Feltenstein who set his broken bone and treated him for illnesses held over from England (Ferris, ). Thomas returned to England, as scheduled, a few days later. Dylans condition quickly deteriorated. He decided to return to America shortly after coming home. Many feel that this was an attempt at self-destruction. His body could not take another trip to America, but Thomas was determined. Caitlin did not approve of this trip, but was not going to accompany him (Ferris, 7). Dylan took off for America on October 1th. Reitell met Thomas on his arrival in New York (Ferris, ). The next few days, Thomas kept from drinking (Ferris, ). Reitell said the were the loveliest days I had with him. He wanted to take walks. He wanted to eat. But he also was frightened (Ferris, ). After this period, Thomas began drinking heavily (Ferris, 00). Thomas health appeared to be continuing to deteriorate by the day. Reitell took him to see Dr. Feltenstein On October, he treated Dylan and told him not to drink so much (Ferris, 00). Thomas drinking only accelerated after this. Reitell, convinced that Dylan wished to die, accompanied him on Monday the 6th and watched him as he slipped into a temporary madness (Ferris, 01). The 7th, Thomas birthday, was more of the same. He was forced to leave his own birthday party because he felt ill; he returned to his hotel (Ferris, 01). Dylan spoke without any problems on the 8th and th (Ferris, 01). He spent the 0th with Reitell and another woman. On the 1st, Thomas resumed drinking heavily and began telling stories of his childhood and professing his love for his wife (Ferris, 0). Sunday, November 1st passed without any significant happenings. November nd started with Thomas drinking beer in the morning, the meeting Reitell and going to dinner with her (Ferris, 0). Tuesday the rd started with Thomas drinking in his room. He kept some previous meetings for drinks with Reitell and returned to the Hotel in the evening. That evening, he admitted to Reitell that he wanted to die (Ferris, 0). The next morning at 00, he left his room for a drink. He was gone for an hour and a half (Ferris, 0). Upon his return to the hotel room, Thomas said, Ive had eighteen straight whiskies. I think thats the record (Ferris, 04). Eighteen whiskies was probably an exaggeration (Thomas was known to embellish his drinking stories). Thomas woke up on the 4th and walked with Reitell to the White Horse to drink two beers. They returned to the hotel, Thomas sick (Ferris, 04). Reitell called Dr. Feltenstein again. He came to the hotel and medicated Thomas to ease his pain (Ferris, 04). After sleeping for a while, Thomas woke up and complained of hallucinations. Reitell called Feltenstein again. When he arrived, he injected Thomas with a half grain of morphine sulfate (Ferris, 04). Thomas breathing was depressed enough from his asthma, smoking, and a case of pneumonia that a half-grain of morphine could have been enough to limit the oxygen to his brain (Ferris, 06). Thomas slipped into a coma and was taken to St. Vincents Hospital. He lived on in a coma until November th. Thomas cause of death was under two headings, acute and chronic ethylism (alcoholism), and hypostatic bronchopneumonia (Ferris, 08). Debate still surrounds Thomas death. The newest theory blames Feltenstein. Feltenstein failed to recognize that Thomas was a diabetic. The new theory claims that Feltenstein not only administered morphine, but also cortisone and benzedrine which would have propelled Thomas into a diabetic coma. The new theory also states that Thomas was not an especially heavy drinker, he simply drank enough to inebriate him every night. Nashold and Tremlett say, It can be said with certainty that Dylan Thomas did not die of an acute alcoholic intoxication of the brain. These theories do not overshadow the fact that people around Dylan Thomas felt that he was going to die before the events in New York in the fall of 15. Thomas did not want to live to the age of forty. He was a young poet and will stay perpetually young. Thomas says this in his own word in part of Poem on His Birthday …Oh, let me midlife mourn by the shrined And druid herons vows The voyage to ruin I must run, Dawn ships clouted aground, Yet, though I cry with tumbledown tongue, Count my blessings aloud… ..And this last blessing most, That the closer I move To death, one man through his sundered hulks, The louder the sun blooms And the tusked, ramshackling sea exults…

The great war.

The structure of the society depicted a rigid caste system, the higher of the five castes enjoy superior tasks, while the lower ones are brought up and forced to perform unskilled roles in society. The World State is controlled by a totalitarian government, consisting of ten controllers. These controllers are the people that hold all the power and control over this new world. Control and peace are maintained by the means of many scientifically-advanced tactics. These include the conditioning of infant minds, and the soothing of adult depression and pain with the tranquilizer, soma.

Community, Identity, Stability is the motto of Aldous Huxleys utopian World State, therefore destroying all ideas of eccentricity, freedom, and individualism among the people. In this world, each person is raised in a test tube rather than a mothers womb, and the government controls every stage of their development. By doing this, the government is able to create a society full of human clones, with no individual personalities whatsoever. The people of this state have been brainwashed to ignore the need for pleasure and fulfillment in their lives, and to solely concentrate on the coKAJAKAKmpletion of the everyday tasks required of them. These people are obsessed with physical pleasure, and completely disregard any need for spirituality, family andonly pleasure and happiness through the drug, soma and the act of sexual intercourse.

for only that of what they have been conditioned to strive for. The ideals of society are to continue advancing further technologically, as well as lslasla

of this society are to maintain this robot-like world, using technology to continue to enforce the repetitive, unchanging everyday rituals on the people. This creates the never-changing stability that is so important to the government of the state.

The American Revolution

The American Revolution, what is the American Revolution? American, one who lives in America, Revolution, a fundamental change in political organization or the activity or movement designed to effect fundamental changes in the socioeconomic situation. This definition helps the understanding of the American Revolution.

This Revolution included the American colonies and the British.During the late 1700s this Revolution began to take form. The American colonies took a stand to over power the British government and their unreasonable acts. The colonies were forced to deal with taxes on papers, land titles, playing card, newspapers, sugars and so on.Other Acts enabled trade with certain countries, which created an even greater expense for the people. The people could not fight these taxes because they did not have direct representation; instead they had virtual representation which enabled them to have a direct say on acts.

These unfair acts and taxes were the beginning of what later arose into a whole Revolution. The unreasonable amount of taxation on most common good started up a whole chain of smuggling from America to Europe and back.Even with the smuggling the taxes were to strong and later became impossible to deal with when the British government enabled trade from some major harbors.

In conclusion the British government brought this rebellion upon themselves by over taxing the people and enabling them to trade freely. This all led up to the American Revolution.Which relates back to the beginning, where revolution is defined as an activity or movement designed to effect fundamental changes in the socioeconomic situation. An exact definition of the American Revolution.

One difference between the two types of government is the executive branch. In the parliamentary executive, there is a head of the state or the Queen in the British Monarchy who represents and manifests the state and its character. The job is usually hereditary, and the position is given to a member of the family. In addition, in this type of government it also has a chief executive who performs ceremonial duties of the office, and is a full-time politician but does not perform the symbolic activities. In the Presidential executive, the president holds both positions as a head of state along with a chief executive.

The chief executive and the president share such jobs as coordinating government policymaking, and such things as being assisted by cabinets where people head separate departments of governments. The president also share the same responsibilities as the head of state in their term they will do such things as host receptions, lay wreaths on tombs, receive ambassadors, and perform much government required ceremonial jobs.

The legislative and the executive branch both are very different between the governments. In the presidential government the executive and the legislative are two different branches in which "check up" on each other with not on branch having more power than another. With the parliamentary system, this is different, with the executive and legislative combined. This means the legislative does not freely provide a significant check on power of the executive. Instead, the jobs of the branches are for the executive to lead and then the legislature's part is to follow in the decisions.

"Fire and Ice"

By Robert Frost

In the world and human life, fire and ice are known to be the exact opposites.Since being a baby or young child, we have been taught about what things are hot and what things are cold.It is relevant to realize these things before touching them, for one may become seriously injured.Frost uses fire and ice as symbols. Some things may be as hot as fire or as cold as ice. Some people may favor "fire", such as the heat in summer days or the passion in love.Others may prefer the cold winter days, enjoy playing in the snow, or feel like they want to be left alone.Fire is a very strong symbol that may represent love, passion, desire, or full blown torture and pain.Ice is a symbol that represents the absence of passion, disinterest, or even hatred.

In the first two lines of "Fire and Ice", Robert Frost expresses the possibilities of how the world may end. This does not necessarily refer to the whole entire world.A possible interpretation of these two lines could mean destruction caused by either fire or ice. When some say that the world may end in fire, the "fire" is not directed as a burning flame, but represents the image of intense pain that may arise from a fire and the amount of time which it may spread or occur.Fire causes an unbelievable amount of destruction to anything in a couple of seconds. It could also represent a violent and painful ending for human kind, because fire can kill in seconds tops, but the pain is very intense, which may not make it worth it to end life quicker.Ice, on the other hand, seems to represent the world ending in a slower manner than with fire.Even though with ice it would take longer to perish, it is not as intensifying as burning in fire.Ice represents the image of a slower and numbing effect, and Frost uses ice to represent a slow type of change and torture that will eventually lead to the destruction of mankind.

Another possible interpretation of this poem could be about love and hate.Love is usually associated with passion and desire, which is born of fire. People yearn for and have burning desire for the person that they are interested in.The cold emotions, on the other hand, are hatred and lack of interest or care, which are born out of ice. Both of these emotions are extremes of the love of humans. In the quote, "From what I've tasted of desire, I hold with those who favor fire", Frost expresses the emotion that from all love that he has felt or seen, he agrees with those whom favor fire, because they have expressed a lot of passion and desire, and the world for them can end quickly with the fire. When frost writes "But if I had to perish twice, I think I know enough of hate to say that for destruction ice is also great", to me means that the speaker may have had a rough life full of hate and disinterest and does not care to having a slow, more tortured ending. It would therefore be suffice because the speaker has experienced the effects of both fire and ice within his lifetime, and knows which way he would rather see mankind destroyed."Both of these extremes destroy the soul of humanity and the individual, and the metaphors of fire and ice fit" (Yahoo).

The tone of this poem is unemotional.I can imagine the speaker speaking in monotone. As I read the poem, I sense that the speaker is more towards "ice" because he speaks about the world coming to a destructive ending, and is willing to accept whatever destruction will come.He seems like a cold and careless human being. The tone of the speaker, however, does not shift throughout the poem.Frost includes abstract words to refer to love and hate. The word fire refers to love and desire. The word ice refers to hate, perish, and destruction.

This poem to me was interesting because it has many different interpretations and readers might perceive the message in different ways. When I first read the poem, I perceived that the idea was about life and going through good and bad times, fire representing the intense moments and experiences in life, and ice representing the cold, lonely days.I sensed that the speaker was not a happy person, and did not care if he burned to death or drowned in water cold as ice.As I further interpreted the lines, I came across the idea about love and hate, and about death and destruction, which is what I think Frost tried to convey to the readers."The beauty of the poem is revealed when Frost unifies twp opposites into a coherent form to make us understand their connection" (Yahoo).

ELOM KATAKO

ENGLISH COURSEWORK

AN UNUSUAL PERSON

On the outskirts of my neighbourhood, in an old brick red Victorian styled house, bordered on one side by a cemetery and on all other sides by thick bushes except the front, living in solitary existence is the weirdest and most unusual person known to me.

This man, known only by the name of 'Macaulsky' by everyone in the neighbourhood is very mean. This has led to him being dubbed 'Old M' by all the children in the neighbourhood.

Old M stands at four and a half feet, and has a slight hump on his crooked back. His rust coloured hair, which seems to be hanging precariously on his bean shaped head as if on the verge of falling of is extremely bushy, and this makes him look very menacing. Due to this, whenever he is seen trudging grumpily along, all the children run indoors for cover.

Old M has tiny bat-like ears, which seem to detect the faintest of sounds, as he can constantly be seen turning around, as if in response to some unseen person calling his name. The children in the neighbourhood, who call out his name from obscure places anytime he limps by, much to his displeasure, prey upon this particular trait of his mercilessly.

Old M has red blood shot eyes, which glow in the dark like hot coals, and is believed to be blind in one of his eyes, which can turn to certain angles that no normal eye can. The other eye, however, is as sharp as a hawk's, and with this, Old M takes in even the most trivial details, often with a scowl on his wrinkled, sun beaten face.

Old M rarely smiles, however, on the rare occasions that he parts his thin, chapped, blood red lips, hidden by his bushy moustache, an incomplete set of yellow and brownish can be seen. He also has an oddly placed gold tooth, which, rumour has that, he possessed even as a little child.

His long, pointed, bullet- like nose can always be seen twitching, like that of a rabbit's, and it is suspected that he can even detect the slightest whiff of a smell from within a hundred mile radius.

Old M is as lean as a blind man's staff, and his bones are very conspicuous beneath his frail, death pale skin. His tiny cassava-stem like legs, which at any point in time seem like they are about to break, are connected to huge, dinosaur- like feet.

Old M can occasionally be heard yelling insults at little children, and even stray animals whenever they trespass on his property, and in certain instances, he even attempts to chase them off with a stick.

On Sunday mornings, Old M can be seen sitting in the shade of a huge tree in his bushy compound, smoking his pipe and reading a huge stack of newspapers, with his portable radio broadcasting the news at full volume by his side.

Even though Old M is quite mean and grumpy, studying him is a very interesting way to pass time, and his enigmatic and rather cruel nature makes him the most unusual person ever known to me.
