Shakira is a Rockstar

By Adriana Rodriguez

The article I chose was about Shakira and how the U.S. views her as pop star, when in reality she considers herself to be a rock-star.Shakira is not a new artist, at least not to me. She has made five CD's in Spanish before she came out with her cross-over album "Laundry Service". She has recently started up her first arena headlining tour in the U.S. to show who she really is. She wants to get rid of the pop icon image that the MTV generation has portrayed her as.

Shakira was born in Barranquilla Colombia and moved to Miami as a teenager. She is now twenty-five and still lives in Miami with her parents. She started writing and playing guitar a t a very young age and was considered a child prodigy. To Latin America she has been around for seven years. She was not a new artist when recently came out with her single "Whenever Wherever", I was a bit surprised, but still pretty anxious that she was coming out with a new CD not as much that it was in English. I have been a fan of hers since 16 when her fist CD "Pies Descalzos" came out. And since then she has been a rock and roll star since then, but the U.S. has gotten the wrong idea about her.

Unlike most pop stars, Shakira writes all her own songs. The only time she had help from other people was with the cross-over album. Everything is completely original and she is one of a kind. I was not too thrilled with the English album. The quality of her lyrics was nowhere close to her previous CD's. The few songs in Spanish that were on the album kind of showed her real potential that she has to write and make music.I attended her concert on Jan. 18th and there was where she really shined. In that concert she showed her rock side and she fit into it perfectly. She is truly a rock star, and I have always known that, but the rest of America hasn't had the chance to see her firmly planted roots that come from rock and roll. She was influenced by some of the greatest rock bands of all time, how can she not follow through with them in her own work. Pop star, I don't think so.

In all, I can't really hate anything she does because I truly admire her as an artist. I don't think she needed to cross-over, because in Latin America she was already a superstar wherever she went. But and artist like her I guess has to be shared with the rest of the world and needs to surpass boundaries. She didn't even speak English fluently, and she wrote a whole album. That takes time and intelligence. Her love for rock and roll shows through her later music, and if you listen to her CD you will see glimpses of it here and there. But her greatest accomplishments have been her earlier works. Her first language is Spanish, and she thinks in Spanish, so naturally she can express herself better in her native language. Her English cross-over was not a complete disaster, but hardcore fans as myself know that she can do more than what she gave in that album. But she still is the one person in the world I want to be when I grow up.

From a room of one’s own/ Virginia Woolf

1)How does Virginia Woolf presents the condition of women through out history, a condition that explains why we haven’t heard of Shakespeare’s sister.

Woolf describes a situation that women are hardly described in the history books. Imaginatively and in fiction the woman is of the highest importance, even though, practically in reality she is completely insignificant. Before the eighteen century nothing is known about women, however, V. Woolf doubts that women were educated, she assumes that they had no money for themselves, they were married, whether they liked it or not, at fifteen or sixteen very likely. They were locked up, bitten and flung by their own families and men in general.

All that explains why we haven’t heard of Shakespeare’s sister.

It is unthinkable for woman in Shakespeare’s day to desire to write and publish a poem or to be recognized, moreover, to be genius. First because women were not educated, especially middle class, second, woman began working before they were out of the nursery and were forced to it by their parents and the power of law and custom. According to V.Woolf if any woman had been born with a great gift, she would certainly have gone crazed, shot herself or ended her days in some lonely cottage outside the village, half witch, half wizard, feared and mocked at. Besides it is a fact, there were no plays by woman, if a woman had tried to use her gift for poetry, she would have been hindered and tortured because men encouraged the conventions who forbidden women to express themselves and write. Nevertheless, the rest of the genius women probably chose anonymity, they unsigned their work or veiled themselves by using the name of man.

Design Concept

By Jarrad Carroll

The late 60's. A time of youthful freedom, hope of a better world and joy of living day to day life. The late 60's. A time of countries at war, loss of freewill through conscription and families losing loved ones. The late 60's. A time in which Australia decided to reinvent itself and find it's own identity.

This is the era in which renowned playwright Michael Gow chose to set his timeless classic 'Away'. The play focuses on three relatively normal Australian families in the late 60's and shows the ways in which the current events of the time affected each one. Each family is also beset with their own problems, and as the go 'away' on holidays each family subsequently come to terms with the faults and failings that they find in each other.

Each family's problem is focused on at least one major occurrence of the time, from the Vietnam War, to poor living standards, to the structure of the family unit.

The plague on the family of Jim, Gwen and Meg is the economy. Gwen and Jim were both brought up in a time where money was hard to come by, jobs were unavailable to many and living conditions were poor to most people's standards.By the 160's this time has come to a finish. Jim is successful at his job and Gwen is a typical housewife. Unfortunately though, due to the period in which both parents grew up in, they put economic welfare above happiness. Gwen especially continually puts forward the impression that the only way to show their daughter Meg that they love her is to give her material possessions. This results in Meg seeing nothing but a loveless matriarch for a mother, and a submissive overworked father.

The next family, Vic, Harry and Tom, still suffer from the impoverished society that Gwen and Jim once left behind, but also have much bigger problems on their hands; cancer. Immigrants from England, Harry hasn't been as lucky as Jim to find a permanent, well paid job and instead, both Vic and Harry work in a factory to earn their meagre earnings. Tom has also recently returned from a long stay in hospital where he went through intense chemotherapy that unfortunately only stayed the effects of the disease for a short while. Vic and Harry know that they will someday lose their son to the disease and therefore create as loving an environment as they can muster. Unbeknownst to Vic and Harry though is the fact that Tom also knows that the illness will one day consume him. This brings in the element of "free love" to the play. Tom is told by a doctor that he should have sexual intercourse if he ever sees an opportunity. The scene in which Meg refuses Tom highlights the fact that free love is fading and that societies morals and values are strengthening.

The Vietnam War and its accompanying conscription are the poisons of the final family, Roy and Coral. After the loss of their son as a result of unwilling conscription in the Vietnam War, Coral's mental state deteriorated and she was eventually removed from society for a period of time. In the play 'Away', she has only recently been released from a mental institution, that her husband Roy had had her committed to, and is still trying to cope with the loss. This shows the effect that the Vietnam War had not only on the soldiers who fought, but also on those who were left behind.

I have chosen to direct the first section of Act Scene to direct. This scene will be set in the style of Realism to show how real the family of Gwen, Jim and Meg is and how they can represent the side of a family that usually doesn't make it into the family photo album. This scene shows Gwen, Jim and Meg in a camping ground full of tents and caravans on Christmas morning. The scene opens in an already tense mood as Gwen sets up the Christmas tree outside the caravan. Gwen then proceeds to scold Jim and Meg (who are offstage at the time) for waking up late and complains that Christmas will pass them by. This reflects the fact that women were becoming more powerful in society (also highlighted by the fact of Vic being a working mum).

After Gwen has finished complaining about kids on bikes in the camping ground to Meg (who has come on the stage), a frantic Jim enters and asks about a cardboard carton that has gone missing. Gwen gets annoyed by the fact that Jim is searching like a madman and not getting on with the morning traditions and makes no effort to mask her annoyance. This once again goes to show the matriarchal side of the family that was put in place at the opening of the scene. Gwen has a very powerful presence and prefers to be in control. After pulling apart the campsite in search of the missing carton, Jim finally explains that inside were his presents for his wife and daughter and that he was sure he left it with the suitcases so that it would get packed. Jim's frantic search of the campsite is very reflective of his character. Though he works for a living and spends little time with his family, he is deeply devoted to his wife and daughter, and working is the way he shows that love. The fact that Jim is so intent on finding these material possessions shows that love.

Jim eventually gives up his search in hopelessness. Gwen and Meg then give out their presents. After Gwen making some snide remarks about Jim leaving the presents behind, Meg realises that she saw the carton near Gwen's vanity case. This then leads to Meg starting to accuse Gwen of leaving the carton behind. Eventually, the fight escalates to more than just the presents. Meg starts to accuse her mother of leaving it on purpose and how stupid some of the traditions that the family share are. Gwen then becomes angry with Meg, baffled by where her new found independence has come from and accuses Tom for it. Gwen also goes even further and starts an angry bitter fight with Meg about what type of woman she's becoming. Gwen goes as far as to list attributes of the woman Meg is becoming, attributes that she states no one likes, but yet is oblivious to the fact that each one of those attributes is one that Gwen herself possesses.

The scene finishes up with Gwen storming out, claiming that she needs a powder, a trait typical of Gwen's character throughout the entire play. Jim then has a quiet talk with Meg and explains to her the conditions her mother grew up in, and why it seems so important to Gwen that Meg never have to be in the same position. This once again shows Jim's love and devotion to his wife, while at the same time trying to keep in touch with his daughter.

Gwen

Clothing In this scene, Gwen will be dressed in a simple white blouse, and a long flowing skirt tie dyed light and dark blue. The skirt has a dual meaning. Not only does it show the time period in which they are in now, but also shows the unpredictability and turbulent nature that Gwen possesses.

Speech Most of the time, Gwen speaks in a fast paced, sharp and accented tone. This shows her impatience with everyone around her and the fact that she wants everything done right and exactly as it's been done before. The accented tones are to show that she expects everyone to know what place they are in and what the should be doing. Movement Gwen either moves with grace (to show that she likes perfection) or with speed (for when she either tries to avoid things or gets annoyed with things).

Jim

Clothing Jim is dressed as a plain man. He wears fairly short stubbies, a tucked in polo shirt and a bucket fishing hat. The fact that Jim is dressed in fairly commonplace and plain clothing emphasised the fact that he is a typical father figure. Jim loves his wife and daughter and would do anything to make them happy.

Speech Jim generally speaks with either a hint of hopelessness in his voice (when he feels he has no control) or out of love (when he reminisces about his wife).

Movement Jim generally doesn't move too much unless he's told to do something or feels he has to in order to keep order. Though he moves frantically in his search for the carton, after he sits down, he only moves to try and break up the fight that has begun between Gwen and Meg.

Meg

Clothing Meg is dressed in only slightly less conservative clothes than her mother. A simple no sleeved black shirt and a short, knee length skirt is all she wears. This is to show Meg's desire not to become her mother by use of opposite colours and shorter styles. It is also to emphasise the moving away from the styles of the older generation by the newer generation.

Speech Meg speaks with disregard of what people are actually saying. As with most teens in just about every generation, she doesn't particularly care what her disliked parent (in this case, Gwen) is saying, but tries to get involved when her loved parent (Jim) is saying something. Meg also speaks out of spite to her mother during the argument.

Movement Meg only moves with purpose, realising that unless there's a reason to go somewhere that she doesn't really have to go there.

Set Design

The design of the set is fairly simple for this scene, as to not take away from the conflict between Meg and Gwen. There is a simple backdrop showing a generally blue sky with emerging dark clouds in the distance with pictures of caravans and tents, but no people (to show that these three are in their own little world at this time). There is a cardboard caravan side with a door and some stairs as this is where Meg and Jim enter from. This is placed back centre stage. Around the entrance to the caravan there are two chairs (one to the left of the door, one to the right), a few bags and camping supplies (riddled around the area for Jim to search through) and a Christmas tree (that Gwen brings in and places centre stage).

Lighting

The lighting for this scene is three plain coloured spotlights (one front stage left, one front stage right, one front stage centre) all directed towards the stuff outside the caravan (centre stage). The reason the stage is not flooded is again to show that the family is isolated to itself.

The Tears of a Girl

The four walls are pasty white. Decorative paintings are sporadically placed upon them. The monitors are constantly beeping, keeping the nurses alert of my progress. The sounds of the voices in the halls along with the television accompany me as I sat alone crying a dry-rain in the darkness. Moist and flowing, my tears rain down from my heart. I was sitting in a room at the hospital, handcuffed to the bed. The loneliness inside of me turned into darkness.

Even though I am pregnant I will be confined to this room, under the supervision of a police officer, until I deliver my baby. As the shock settles within me, I return back to reality and realize that I know little or nothing about what my consequences will be. I can't believe what I have done. Murder is both a sin and a crime, and I have committed both of them.

This is not the first time this issue has surfaced within our relationship, but this time it was too much to handle. He and I were arguing about the responsibility of taking care of our seven children. He stated that he didn't think that it was as much his responsibility as it was mine, and then I blacked out. Buried emotions exploded from my soul like a volcanic eruption, and just as the lava flows from a volcano, I sought to destroy whatever was in my path. When I came to, I was covered in blood and I didn't know what had just happened? It was just then that I realized that I was holding the knife and he was silent.

What lead to this? How could I have committed such a heinous crime? There are a lot of questions running through my head and deep down inside of me I know the answers.

I grew up in a single-parent household. My mother did what she could for us, while my father did what he wanted for himself. He came by the house every now and again, when he decided to be a father. That always left me wanting more from him.

While I started to wonder if my father even loved me at all, I developed an evil kindness towards men. Throughout my adolescence, I continually dealt with questions about the expectations of men and love. Afraid to deal with the answers to those questions, I created my own. My answers made me bitter, resentful, and very unpleasant towards the men in my relationships. Yet I continued to have relationships with men without ever confronting my issues with them. How do I learn to love a man? How could I even trust them? I felt that to be with a man, I neither had to trust or love him, using him was good enough to me. The truth of the matter is that I was really the one being used.Giving myself continually to someone who didn't love me, nor did I love myself.

People say that you marry your father. In saying that, they mean that you marry the man that resembles an image of what your father is to you. When your father is a negative role model or an absentee altogether in your life, it has a strong impact on the decisions you make in regards to finding people to share relationships with. I have had a message of anger, disappointment, and pain to convey to my father all of my life, except when it was time for me to deliver it to him, someone else was there to receive it.

HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW

Henry Longfellow is not only a poet, he is one of Americas most world known poets for reasons other than poetry.

His mother Zilpah Wadsworth Longfellow and his father Stephen Longfellow brought Henry Longfellow into this world on February 7, 1807, in Portland, Maine. Put into school at the early age of three, helped Henry to be one of the smartest boys in his school. At age six, a letter was sent home to his parents letting them know that Henry was an exceptional student in reading, spelling and also at adding and multiplying.

Henry's dad had plans for him to follow in his foot steps and become a lawyer and this plan was starting to unfold, until one day at Bowdoin College where Henry was currently a noticeable senior, the college established a chair of modern languages. The College asked Henry if he would like to become their first professor. In May of 186, Henry took a break from his job as a professor and headed out for Europe so that he could go to more school and become a Scholar and Linguist.

Henry returned to America in 18 with plans to start a new career. At the age of, Henry launched into his career as a College Professor who had to write all of his own text because there wasn't any other text.

In the middle of all this confusion with his career, Henry found time to fall in love and get married to Mary Storer Potter an old schoolmate and a close friend. Once he was married Henry and his wife settled down in house hidden by some Elm trees. This is where he wrote translations from Old World literature and taught as a professor and was the librarian for Bowdoin.

In 184, Henry was appointed a professorship at Harvard. So with this new bit of news, Henry and his wife set out for Europe by way of preparation. This trip to Europe would not end in happiness. In Rotterdam, Henry's wife died.

With his wife being dead, Henry went alone to Cambridge for the new professorship. He lived alone in a room at the historic Craigie House. Nathan Appleton owned the house, and several years after Henry had moved in, he would marry Frances Appleton, daughter of Nathan Appleton who gave the Craigie House to Longfellow and his new wife. The two ended up having five children, two boys and three girls.

In 1854, he resigned from Harvard and with his mind and heart set, he gave himself to the task of his own poetic writing. In June of that year Longfellow would begin 'The Song of Hiawatha'. Next he would come up with the story about John Alden and Prisilla named 'The Courtship of Miles Standish' which was published in 1858. Twenty-five thousand copies were sold during the first week of its publication, and 10,000 copies were ordered to London the first it was published.

Everything was perfect until 1861, when they happiness came to an end for Henry, his second wife would die. Nearly twenty years later and a few honorary degrees from the universities of Oxford and Cambridge later, and a couple hundred stories, songs and poems later, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow died on March 4, 188.

In the essay, " Why Women Are Paid Less Then Men," Lester C Thurow argues that women do not get paid as much as men.First, Thurow takes us back 40 years ago where white women made 60 percent less than men.In that same time period, it was evident that minorities were catching up with whites. The shocking thing was that minority women were making more progress than minority men.Thurow uses statistics as his argument strategy to try to prove his point. The purpose of this was that he was trying to establish credibility. However, Thurow does not say the sources of his statistics. In the first paragraph, Thurow ask the question "Why?".Why are these women being paid less than men? This question tells us what the whole essay is going to be about. By the author asking the question, this gives him the opportunity to introduce his evidence. When Thurow makes the comment " Men are programmed to provide for their families economically while women are programmed to take care of their families emotionally and physically," he is implying that men put more effort into their jobs than women. He suggest that there is there is no discrimination against women. He feels that it is only the biological factors of life.

There is a problem with this conclusion that it is no longer valid. It is no longer valid because it is a conclusion with no evidence other than the fact that white women have made less than men for a long time."Discrimination against women" is an easy answer but it also has its problems with as an sufficient explanation. Once again, this is not the answer.Thurow then poses the question, "Why is discrimination against women not declining under the same social forces that are leading to the lessening of discrimination against minorities?" In reality, women have made more use of the enforcement provision of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. This leads to the question, why do the laws that prohibit discrimination against minorities but not for women? The author asks questions to get the reader thinking.

Thurow tries to appeal to the reader by logical thinking. He also uses reasonable thinking skills to appeal to the reader. He does this when he brings up the point that if men discriminate against women, it is like discriminating against their own wives.Once again the author is trying to make one think.

The organization of the text was very straight forward. The author presents the issue then backs it up with statistics. After the statistics, Thurow then follows with a conclusion.Thurow's tone in this essay was very serious; he used a serious tone to get his point across.

Thurow tries to use building credibility as his argumentative strategy. He does somewhat of a good job.He gives plenty of statistics and facts. This was good because it makes him appear like he knows what he is talking about. The only problem with that was that he did not cite where he got the sources.I think that if he were to cite them directly in the essay, that would made his paper more creditable.

In conclusion, Thurow did a good job arguing his claim. The organization of the text was straightforward and got right to the point. The essay was easy to understand. However, the paper would have been more creditable if the author had cited where he got his statistics.Overall, this was a good essay.

In the beginning there was math. And man saw that math was good and started building upon that.In the 1500s, one of the first inventions to revolutionize the world was a simple machine that could add and subtract. This machine was called a calculator.Leonardo de Vinci was credited as the first one to come up with the idea and draw the plans out to make it.Later on in the 1640s, it would be Blaise Pascal that would build such a device and call it the "Arethmetic Machines".He built this machine in order to help the world escape the confines of doing extreme addition in ones head, and to help count money as his father often performed. Unbeknownst to Pascal, the actions and tasks performed by this simple machine would be similarly implemented by machines in the 1st century.Decaes went on as more inventions an innovations began to make simple machines into complex powerhouses of technology.

The term "personal computer" began to be used quite often in the mid 100s.Several companies claimed that they made the first "personal computer".For example, the IBM 610 Auto-Point Computer of 157, was described as being "IBMs first personal computer".Also, other computer companies made computers such as MITs LIC (16), CTCs Datapoint 00 (171), Kenbak 1 (171), and the Xerox Alto (17) were all concepts of personal computing but these were either too expensive, or too experimental to have any real usability from consumers. It wasnt till a company made an affordable, relatively powerful microcomputer available for consumer use.The Scelbi Computer Consulting Company presented the 8008-based Scelbi-8H in mid 17 that was advertised for $565 and was built with only 1 kilo-byte of RAM.Two years later, Bill Gates and Paul Allen would join forces to create the mighty Microsoft.Other companies decided to start with a sole purpose to create a bigger better personal computer. This resulted in several computer giants that would dominate personal computing retail industry.Toshiba, IBM, Hewlett-Packard, and Dell are a few giants that base their company on the selling of personal computers.Dell became one of the largest companies because they introduced the idea of direct sales and just-in-time manufacturing to the PC (Personal Computing) industry.

Michael Dell, the founder of Dell Corporation, began with humble beginnings. He was born in Houston, Tx in 165.At age eight, he tried to take a high school equivalency test but failed when the sales woman for the test saw him as a little boy and end her sales pitch right then.Dell started out going to college to become a doctor. His hobby was fixing and selling computers. He borrowed one-thousand dollars from his parents and began selling computers out of his dorm room.He made cheap computers that competed with the larger businesses because he got rid fat gross profit margin retailers stack on.He realized this potential and soon droped out of college his freshman year.Dell then started to concentrate on his small computer business and was on his way to grossing almost $6 million dollars a year.In those years, most computer companies sold computers by mass to retailers. In turn, the retailers would soon then sell it to the customers. This produced high costs that the consumer had to pay.Dell wanted to change this.

Michael Dell introduce new ideas to the world.Dell always ordered cheap parts and built custom made computers for his classmates and family. He wanted to take this to a much larger avenue. In 184, he founded Dell Computers. His company was doing something that the world has never seen before.Dell Computers offered personal computers totally customized for the customer. This got rid of the middle men that were still raising costs in other companies. This ensured that Dell Computers could obtain the customers needs and thu meet and exceed their expectations.Dell Computers in essence used the just-in-time manufacturing in the computer industry which was, at that time, never heard of.

Dell Computers provides serveral products and services. These products include; software, projectors, cameras, scanners, memory, printers, etc. Some services they provide are consulting services, maintenence services, etc.Dells business practices are unrivaled by any other business competitor.Dell has a wide variety of customers ranging from large corporations to goverment related organizations to small businesses and familes. Dealing with so many customers, Dell always focused on doing what is best for those customers.Because of that, the company has grown by 87% in the first eight years, and 55% in the years following since 1.Dell started out selling computers customized directly to the consumer and now is still continuing with that strategy.

Dell now has a mass scale of customizing computers. It builds a computer only after a customer orders one. That keeps inventory costs down, allowing Dell to undersell the competition.

In 1, Dell overtook Compaq, its leading competitor, as the number one largest seller of personal computers.Dell lost the lead to Hewlett-Packard which acquired Compaq. In 00, Dell again took the lead.In the same year, Dell sold more than just computers. The stockholders approved changing the name from Dell Computers to Dell, Inc. at the annual company meeting.

Empowering images of wealth, power and beauty blur the reality of life."The Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant, portrays a woman's desire and envy to belong among the high society as well as feed on attention through her grace and charming good looks.Through a twist of fate and irony, Mathilde Loisel learns that beauty is skin deep and not based on materialism.

The irony is set in motion with Mathildes constant daydreaming.Mathilde is a beautiful and attractive woman who feels destined for all delicacies and luxuries(Maupassant 5).Fate, however, placed her among the simple middle-class life. For her, the only means to an upper-class was through her imagination. She daydreams of large silent anterooms, expensive silks and of achievement and fame that would make her the envy of all other women(Maupassant 5).What she falls short to is that these daydreams only make her more frustrated with her real life.As a result, Mathilde becomes more attached to what she does not have rather than what she has.

The irony deepens due to the borrowed necklace.Mathilde's husband gets a desirable dinner invitation, and her first reaction is a concern for her appearance. She explains to her husband that they cannot possibly go because she has nothing to wear(Maupassant 6).Her husband agrees to buy her a new dress. However, this is not enough for Mathilde; she needs jewelry. She makes clear that, without jewelry, she will appear shabby in the company of rich women(Maupassant 7).In her pursuit to present herself as a wealthy woman, she decided to borrow a superb diamond necklace(Maupassant 8) from a friend.Unfortunately, before arriving home, Mathilde noticed that the necklace was missing.Since the necklace cannot be found, Mathilde and her husband have no choice but to replace it.Consequently, Mathilde's desire to appear part of the upper-class has only succeeded in making them part of a lower-class.

The most ironic part of "The Necklace" is the unnecessary sacrifice. The Loisels decide to replace the necklace without revealing its loss to Mrs. Forrestier. They found a necklace similar to the one they were looking for, at a shop, priced at forty thousand francs. They obtain the thirty-six thousand francs for the necklace from Mr. Loisels inheritance and in the form of loans with enormous interest rates. They struggle and live in poverty for ten years to pay off the necklace.Mathilde now looks like the strong, hard, and rude woman of poor households (Maupassant 11).One Sunday, Mathilde is walking along when she encounters Mrs. Forrestier. Her friend is stunned when Mathilde finally tells her about the necklace. It is then that Mathilde learns that the necklace her and her husband worked hard to replace was only "costume jewelry" (Maupassant 1).Physical appearances are part of all social classes.

Caught up in a dream of superficiality and materialism a woman loses the true meaning of beauty.Guy de Maupassant's "The Necklace", tells a story filled with irony as well as sacrifice.Mathilde's belief in a better life through money and valuables left her poor as it stripped her of her looks.

King Lear Political Interpretation. (summary notes)

Critical analysis by Steven Hazel.

DEBORAH WARNER'S PRODUCTION

-Warner's production is a more personal political tragedy.

-Warner perceives Lear as a madman with an egotistical frame of mind.

-Refers to the pre-decided division of the land and the request for his daughters to pledge their love to Lear as an act of Political abuse.

-There is corruption in a legal sense as Lear asks for his children's love. This incestuous and unacceptable act of flattery is unheard of in a modern society.

-Political portrayal of daughters as they accept the power and then use it against their father.

-In Warner's production, Lear does no undergo such dramatic changes as in many other productions.

-Lear's nakedness represents being stripped of political power in the storm scene

DAVID HARE'S PRODUCTION

-Hare's production is a more societal political tragedy.

-Social Brutality and the need for power leads to a family related civil war that affects everyone.

-Strategic power play and manipulation between characters to gain political power.

-Suppressed emotions (emotions not displayed nor expressed)

-Politically corrupted system within a greedy society. Eg Girls lying in order to obtain land

-The social degradation of Lear leads him to almost poverty stricken circumstances as he is reduced to the status of a beggar.

-The lowering of dead bodies shows emotion regression and social barbarism/political savagery.

-CLOTHING is used as a symbol to show social identity and reflects social status and political authority.

-Cordelia dressed in white when she dies reflects purity

-Edgar wearing Loin cloth shows social downfall

-When Lear is in the storm his cloths are tattered and torn, thus enhancing his insanity and political decline.

-The crown is extremely symbolic as it shows the top of the political hierarchy. The throwing ("Thrust") of the crown at Cornwel and Albany by Lear shows how easily and informally Lear gives away his political power thus decreasing the value of the crown. This leads to Goneril and Regan becoming politically dominant.

-The lies that are evident throughout the play. Such as Edmund to his father about the letter from Edgar. And the false pledging of love by Regan and Goneril to their father reflects the lies and manipulation that is seen in politics.

-Political system becomes questioned

-CHESS BOARD connotation divides characters into their required positions and duties. It suggests the strategic approach by some of the characters where each move is planned and plotted in an effort to gain political power or for another similar purpose. The idea of a chessboard may also suggest that anyone can take a Kings life away from him, even a pawn or servant.

-In this play, Lear is driven and motivated by his desire for flattery, respect and most of all power. "A Power corrupted king at it's centre" Steven Hazel

-Most characters have a political approach to life, with a lack of feeling and emotion. Power is more important than life itself. The end of an ones life or the degradation of an individual is simply a stepping stone for the ultimate...power. eg. The torturing of Gloucester, the killing of Regan by Goneril, the banishing of Cordelia and Kent by Lear

The Excitement of "The Perfect Storm"

This book is a somewhat interesting book if the reader likes the basic facts about the subject. In "The Perfect Storm", Junger gives a lot of interesting detail about fishing yet there are a lot of useless facts that just don't keep the reader interested.

The only few things that Junger writes about that makes one wonder what will happen is when they are back ashore and they are all at the Crow's Nest getting drunk. It makes the reader want to keep reading only to find out how they will turn out or what they might do especially spending at least $000 in a two-week period on beer and liquor. Junger wrote, "Budweiser costs a dollar seventy-five, but as often as not there's a fisherman just in from a trip who's buying for the whole house. Money flows through a fisherman like water through a fishing net one regular ran up a $4,000 tab in a week" (6). It is also kind of amazing about how much food the fishermen have to buy to keep them fed through the trip. For example of all the food the fishermen have to buy Junger explains by writing "They grab fifty loaves of bread, enough to fill two carts. They take a hundred pounds of potatoes, thirty pounds of onions, twenty-five gallons of milk, eighty-dollar racks of steak…Bag by bag they carry out $4,000 worth of groceries" ().

However, most of the book is filled with uninteresting detail that slows the story down such as when Junger wrote, "As early as the 1650's three-man crews were venturing up tot coast for a week at a time in small open boats that had stones for ballast and unstayed masts" (5). There are many times in the book where Junger is writing about one thing and then out of the blue he just starts talking about the fishing in the old times for instance Junger writes "Cod was a blessing but could not alone have accounted for such riches. In 1816, a Cape Ann fisherman..."(8). This is one of the really down sides to "The Perfect Storm". If Junger would have not put as much emphasis on the history of fishing then the book would have been a little better to keep the reader interested instead of making them want to stop reading the book because there is nothing very interesting going on at that time.

Finally, at the end of the book it is just a bad turn out because everyone in the boat dies from the storm. It is just hard to think that after all the things that the fishermen have gone through that they all just ended up dead without anyone there that could help them or being able to say goodbye to their loved ones. Junger writes "It's the morning of October 0th; there's been no word from the Andrea Gail in over thirty-six hours" (1). It is really sad to read about the feelings of the characters in the book. To just imagination how hard it would be to think that their loved ones are dead only because the helicopter couldn't lift the boat.

"The Perfect Storm" gives the reader both interesting and uninteresting thoughts and facts about fishing and the supplies needed to do so. It also has a bad ending that ruins everything in the book; by showing how easily the crew dies on the boat. To think that everything would have been all right if only the boat could have been lifted out of the water then the ending would have been less tragic.

Ours is an age of complexity, contradiction and challenge. At the beginning of the 1st century, although we have the technology unmatched in human experience, it is said that humanity has made little real progress over the past century. Admittedly, scientific technological advances have produced tremendous improvement in the quality of human life. However, they also have negative consequences as well. Nevertheless, this is not a time for despair but for a global commitment to make possible the technology to add the problem of our age.

Admittedly, technology has improved our life dramatically over the past century. With the invention of steam engine in the 1th century, the internal combustion engine in the century just ended, we human beings find ourselves able to exploit on a massive scale energy once locked in coal, oil and gas. At the same time, (dramatic gains in agricultural productivity made possible by) agriculture gained dramatic development by the new technology of water use, fertile and mechanized farming .A large number of people move from farms to cities and factories. The net result is a tremendous elevation of living standard which the world has never seen or even imagined possible. The space travel, miracle drugs, as well as computer technology used in the working place and at home all contribute to our better living standards.

On the other hand, (The increasing complexity of technology also led a new kind of catastrophe, as we see how technology has helped to pollute the environment, lead to the wars, add population pressure and fill the world with goods of questionable necessity.)it is also as clear as daylight that technology has detrimental influence on our life. The risk of cancer caused by the environmental pollution, the possibility of large-scale industrial accidents, the ethical problems drawn by the life-prolong technologies, and the ever--present nuclear holocaust are as a part of the modern age. Further more, the chasm between the rich and the poor is growing wider. According to Times, 1. billion people is living less than 1 dollar a day for food, clothing and shelter, while an average American family have an annual income of S 55000.Although technology has not been out of control by now, if we do not place enough importance on these problems, it will lead to a tragedy to human beings.

Nevertheless(After all),( The real progress depends on we human beings, while technology is only a tool, or more exactly, a two-edged weapon which can be used positively or negatively.) technology is only a tool, a two-edged weapon, under the control of human being. Therefore, we should not despair but use the technology on the right track and address the problem of our age with it. Having acknowledged by the detrimental effect by the atom bomb in the Second World War, human beings have never resort to it. On the other hand, atom energy is used as a clean energy in our daily life and help patients to defeat cancers in hospital. What we call for today is a better global stewardship to overcome all the problems caused by thoughtless apply of technology.

In conclusion, technology can be a blessing or a curse to humanity, depending on how we use them. In order to heal the earth and make the best use of technology, we should evoke the awareness and encourage a better stewardship all over the world. Only in that way can we achieve an earth that nurtures humanity and nature in all their diversity.

Unfortunately, from the beginning, the project was troublesome. Negotiations with the French government were difficult. Disney committed a string of cultural miscues. There was a backlash in France, particularly from Parisian intellectuals, who attacked the transportation of Disneys dream world as an assault on French culture. French farmers used the opening of the park as an occasion for staging a protest against the U.S. government for its insistence that French agricultural subsidies be cut. In addition, there were operational errors. For example, Disney thought that Monday would be a light day for visitors and Friday a heavy one and allocated staff accordingly, but the reality was the reverse. Disney also miscalculated the length of time that people would stay at the theme park and adjacent resort.

Defying Conventionalism

In reading "A Respectable Woman" by Kate Chopin it is apparent that she is very much a realist. Her works are all fictional stories but they represent the stark realities of life. She does not dramatize or make her characters appear heroic, but simply portrays them as everyday people trying to overcome everyday conflicts. Chopin's writing is very unconventional for her time. The female characters in her stories defy the conventional role of women in her time. In writing her stories through her point of view it is obvious that Chopin identifies with her characters. Chopin uses her own unique style, tone and irony to reflect the inner conflict within Mrs. Baroda in "A Respectable Woman."

The style and diction Chopin uses in the story emulate an educated person behind the words as well as in the character of Mrs. Baroda. Chopin uses sentences of substantial length. She gives Mrs. Baroda proper etiquette and an educated vocabulary. Mrs. Baroda is given life with Chopin's words. Her husband exclaims, "You are full of surprises, ma belle," (Chopin 74). And, when asked what is troubling her about Gouvernail, Mrs. Baroda's response is somewhat arrogant; "You used to say he was a man of ideas" (Chopin 74). This response makes it seem as if Mrs. Baroda is bored with Gouvernail, highly contrasting to conventional attitudes of women of that time.

Chopin's use of tone is also innately unique to her considering the time of her writings. Her attitude towards the recognition of female intelligence shines through her work. She gives Mrs. Baroda the thoughts of a regular woman and the capacity to recognize them. Though Mrs. Baroda's thoughts concerning Gouvernail may seem to be

indecent or scandalous within the society of her time, they are private and natural. Chopin's intention is to bring an awakening to society regarding the female persona. She does so with this display of tone.

The ironic situation Chopin uses in the story is the reaction Mrs. Baroda has to Gouvernail after already having a distinct image of who he would be. Much to Mrs. Baroda's surprise he turned out to be nothing like she imagined. Her attraction to him confuses her greatly, "She had never known her thoughts or her intentions to be so confused" (Chopin 75). This use of irony gives identity to Mrs. Baroda. Surely many women of this time can relate to having confusing thoughts such as these. The underlying twist of greater irony is that Mrs. Baroda does not acknowledge the fact that these thoughts are considered as unrespectable as acting on them. "She wanted to draw close to him…as she might have done if she had not been a respectable woman" (Chopin 75). This quote captures Chopin's un conventional attitude. She gives women permission to have identity.

As seen in "A Respectable Woman" Chopin's writing is very unconventional for her time. Mrs. Baroda's character in the story challenge the conservative role of women in her time. Mrs. Baroda's character is allowed to have individuality.Chopin's use of style, tone and irony to reflect her liberal attitude toward the perception of women.

Irony and cool are two words I rarely use.As the Wilson Quarterly says, these two words are both modes of deniable disclosure. After reading this article I really got the true definitions of what irony and cool meant.I knew what irony was but I never was familiar with the definition of cool that the Wilson Quarterly gives."Cool is a modality of expression for those who live in a world where there are no hierarchies, no permanent enfranchisements, and a surfeit of free expression." Both irony and cool enable us to speak our minds while maintaining a small margin for disclaimer.

After finding out that Americans are best at cool, it really made sense. In America, we definitely live in a world with no hierarchies and free expression.I can not imagine America being resorted to irony. If we, Americans, were resorted to irony, that would entitle us to no freedom of speech, no free expression, and we would be in a bureaucratic, clerical, or academic culture. On the other hand, Europeans have no concept of cool now, they do irony best.

Everyone has their own opinion on whether they think they are cool or ironic, but this article is proposing a rule of thumb about Americans and Europeans.I know I am very happy with Americans being cool, but if I go over to Europe I know I would do just fine with a culture resorted to irony.

After reading this article and then the one by Laurence Shames on success I could relate "irony and cool" with success.Being ironic or cool will lead to some success in your life.According to Shames, the surest way to succeed is to keep one's striving low-or least to direct them along already charted paths.

Everyone can have success if they put their all into it.For example, I liked how Shames told us what the contemporary version of success was.He said that beer companies and credit card companies think by us owning their product we will feel successful. The beer company thinks if we are spending ten more cents on a more premium brand that is a huge success for us.I think that is ridiculous.Success, to me, is accomplishing a goal that I have been striving for or even when I have done something well, I feel successful. It does not take much for me to feel successful.

For many people, it takes a lot for them to feel successful.I liked how in the article "The Sweet Smell of Success Isn't All That Sweet" when it said the irony is that today's success-chasers seem obsessed with the ideas of not settling. This statement is so true. There are so many people who graduate college with an excellent degree and are offered a job making around $75,000 and they just are not satisfied with that. They want a job making $100,000 or more.To them, being successful at what they do is making a lot of money.

These two articles were very well written and I really enjoyed them.I learned a lot from them and I enjoyed the different interesting facts they included in each article.Who would have thought that cool and ironic were two of the most well-worn cultural buzzwords of the 10s? I know today, in 00, I never use those words and I rarely hear them used.It is so interesting to see how words change so much from year to year.
