I observed this when my grandmas car broke down once. She had her car towed to the mechanic, and after about a week of it being examined, the mechanic called my grandma and told her that the only problem with the car was that it was out of gas. If we were living the American dream, would my grandma be so lazy as to have her car stop running and never look at the gas gauge? Would she have spent hundreds of dollars getting her car fixed when five dollars would have been suitable for gas? The answer to both questions is no. One final contradiction that Steinbeck uses in his essay that I have personally witnessed is, In no country are more seeds and plants and equipment purchased, and less vegetables and flowers raised. It seems like every other week my neighbor two houses down brings home bags of seeds for plants, trees, fruits, and vegetables, yet their back yard still looks like all they plant are weeds. They even hire landscapers to come and work on their yard. However, two weeks later the yard looks like as though it has never been touched. My neighbors have great ideas, but they never finish them. Spending a mere fortune and getting nothing but what you started with is not a part of the American dream. To most, the American dream is seen as no more than a dream. That is my belief on the prestigious dream that attracts many to this country also. I do not believe that the dream is really possible with people as lazy as they are, and that is why it is called a dream. Under the circumstances with Hester, people would understand that she did not love her alleged husband and would support her, not point and laugh. Although it's enough to break up a marriage, she would not be facing a jail sentence or a life of shame. Maybe an article in the back of the newspaper would let the people in the area know of what has happened but it wouldn't last long in the crazy lives that people live today. I am not all that sure why the punishment would be a lot less in today's society. Some might think it is maybe as time goes on we are starting to think that we are all just human and have faults and do not need to live up to the perfect person that everyone wishes to be.


The product of Hesters "sin", Pearl would have a normal childhood.She would not have to worry about kids not liking her; they would not even know or care about where she came from. We are more open to single parents and there is no need of an explanation. Pearl would live a much more normal life instead of having to be a child of the wild and not know why.


Arthur Dimsdale, the man that that took part in the adultery that changed Hester's life for ever, also the man she truly loved is who is truly punished the most. Not so much by the people around him but his own mind torturing him. Being a minister, it goes back into that feeling of being a perfect person. He feels that he should be the last one to sin and it is eating away at him day by day and leads to his death. After his affaire with Hester, his life went nowhere but down hill with his biggest enemy being himself.


I'm sure that in even today, your own conscience can be your problem but we now all seem to learn to move on much faster. As a minister, the problems would come up with the church but as a person, knowing himself that he did was for the love of Hester and it was worth any sin. Lifestyle's chance and people do to in today's world, it is common to just start over if things do not work out, you are no longer branded to be just one person for the rest of your life. People now a days are much more open to talk about their problems, something as small as a conversation could have saved Arthur.


Roger Chillingsworth would too have been different in today's world, instead of being treated lighter; he would be the most looked down on as a person. Love does not impose harm to anyone, people looking to torture and haunt do. Roger is down right evil, if it was five of five hundred years ago, anyone looking to hurt other people should be treated the same way. While Hester and Arthur where in so much pain, it was giving Roger joy with no expense to him he was seen as nothing more then just the doctor. He died soon after Arthur in what seemed to be happiness; something he did not deserve.


Reading this book makes me think a lot about how we live today. I find it hard to think about how life would be back then, so many rules and roles to fill. Years from now, life might be totally different, more liberal then today. Maybe in a few centuries, life will make today seem filled with irrational rules. As with most things, only time will tell.

She danced madly, ecstatically, drunk with pleasure, with no thought for antying, the triumph of her beautry, in the pride of her success, in a cloud of happiness made up of this universal homage and admiration, of the desires she had aroused, of the completeness of a victory so dear to her feminine heart ( ).


The victory is that she looked magnificent.She is so self absorbed and she can only think about herself.


The irony that the diamond necklace holds reveals to the reader the full extent that being obsessed with materialistic possessions has such an overwhelmingly negative impact on Mathilda's life. The ten years of poverty takes a toll on her.She "looked old now.She had become like all the other strong, hard, coarse women of poor households" ( ).This description foreshadows the real state of the necklace.Just as she is revealed to be what she actually is, so is the necklace.


Mathilda's outlook on life, her obsession with looking good, and the irony of the necklace convey the negative impact that the obsession with materialistic thing has on her life.She has herself convinced that she is deprived, but she really is not.She tells herself that she can only be beautiful if she has jewels and nice furniture.Mathilda believes that life is meaningless if you are not wealthy.All of these things lead to her downfall, becoming everything she tries so diligently not to be.Perhaps if she had been grateful and looked harder for the blessings around her, money or no money, maybe then she could have been a truly happy person.

Saddam Hussein, an Iraqi political leader. Hussein studied law in Egypt after his attempt to assassinate the premier of Iraq, Abdul Karim Kassem, in 15. Hussein wanted to use Kuwait's vast oil resources to help Iraq's economy.


Many people believed that Iraq would next invade neighboring countries such as Saudi Arabia. Some of the countries that opposed Iraq's invasion and that sent forces to this region were the United States, Canada, and several Arab and Western European nations. These countries formed an allied military coalition that caused a worldwide embargo against Iraq. The United Nations Security Council condemned Iraq's occupation and approved the use of military force on Iraq if their troops did not withdraw from Kuwait by January 15, 11. Hussein ignored this demand and refused to withdraw. The consequence of this decision was to go to war. On January 16, 11, the allies bombed military targets in Iraq and Kuwait. Iraq, in return, launched missiles against Saudi Arabia and Israel. The U.S.-led military coalition drove Iraq's armies out of Kuwait. This war, called the Persian Gulf War, lasted only six weeks.


On April 11, 11, the U.N. Security Council made Iraq promise to pay Kuwait for war damages. Hussein also had to destroy all chemical and biological weapons, as well as the facilities that might produce nuclear weapons. In March of 11, the people in Southern Iraq and in the Kurdish areas in the north rebelled and opposed The Iraqi government. As a result, Hussein began air attacks against these rebels. In August, 1, the U.N. had to step in to protect the people. Allied planes patrolled this area, and the allies placed a no fly zone for Iraq over Kurdish regions.


In October, 14, large numbers of Iraq troops moved to the Kuwaiti border again. The U.S. sent thousands of troops to this area, fearing another Iraqi attack. Finally in November of 14, Hussein formally recognized the independence and boundaries of Kuwait.

However, this did allow the US to gain more land than just Texas. The Oregon issue, on the other hand, was more peaceful. The US negotiated and made a treaty with Britain instead of going to war with them. However, both these issues were different ways the US gained land and expanded their nation.


James K. Polk and Franklin Pierce were both former presidents of the United States and were both known as "dark horse" presidents. Both Polk and Pierce studied law. Polk later became Governor of Tennessee. Polk, although unknown, linked the Texas and Oregon issues to gain favor in both the North and the South and become president. During his presidency, Polk gained California and New Mexico after a victory in the Mexican War. Pierce, on the other hand served in the Mexican War and was nominated for president in 185. The two viewpoints on the issue of Texas would be the American viewpoint and the Mexican viewpoint. John Donne's "A Valediction Forbidding Mourning," and Shakespeare's "Sonnet XVIII" depict love in extremely different ways. John Donne explores the power of the connection between his, and his lover's souls, whereas Shakespeare focuses mainly on the beauty of his lover.


Donne was a metaphysical poet who used his intelligence to produce original, clever poetry, although this did sometimes cause criticism, as some people accused him of trying to show off his intelligence, and being arrogant. However, others thought that this elevated his poems, and made them more special, as I think it does in this particular poem. As he plays with the language in the poem, it can make the meaning quite hard to decipher, however this leads one to think about the imagery and meanings, which can often lead to a deeper appreciation of the poem.


"A Valediction Forbidding Mourning," the title of Donne's poem, leads one immediately to the thought of death, as 'mourning' usually takes place after a death. The start of the poem also involves imagery concerning death. The image is of a man on a death bed at the moment before his death, however it is not upsetting, it describes as 'men passe mildly'away' which sounds tranquil and beautiful. This is how he would like his parting with his wife to be, as he says in the title of the poem he 'forbids' mourning, as he does not believe they are truly parting because their souls will remain intertwined, although they are apart physically. The 'no' used as the last word of this stanza is quite ambiguous, as the exact meaning is unclear. It could mean that some are exclaiming 'no!' because they do not want this person to die, or it could mean that they do not believe he is really parting as his spirit will live on. I took it to mean that they are trying to decide when the exact moment the man dies is, and it is hard to tell as he already looks so peaceful, that moving from one world to the next does not appear to be a stressful thing, as he will remain in their hearts forever. This is to symbolise that this parting with his wife should not be stressful as they will be together spiritually anyway.


This idea continues in the next stanza as he describes how he wants 'No teare-floods, nor sigh-tempests move,' This means he does not want her to cry and the word 'tempests' is like a storm. He does not want her to be upset, because, as the next two lines explain, their love runs deeper than other people's love it would be 'prophanation,' or spoiling their 'joyes' 'To tell the layetie' their love. The 'layetie' are ordinary church-going people, and so Donne is suggesting that the love they share is rarefied, and above the average, and so it would be to go against God to tell others of it. The next stanza talks about 'Moving of th'earth' and how sometimes men were scared, as they didn't know what these movements (earthquakes) were. However when they came to understand, it seemed much less frightening, as most things do when an explanation is provided. He also describes how when looking at the 'spheares' or planets, even though they are far away, they are so beautiful they seem very innocent. This is like their love, it transcends beyond the normal, and there is nothing to fear within their love.


The next stanza begins 'Dull sublunary lover's love' all these 'l's sound very heavy and dull which represents how this normal love is below their special love. It goes on to give reasons why it is not as special; it says '(whose soule is sense)' which suggests that to stay in love, they need to touch and see each other. Whereas their love lies within their souls, so they do not need this physical proximity. Also it talks of how they cannot cope with absence; they must stay together as their love does not stretch that far. Part of this stanza is in brackets, which seems quite strange for a poem as brackets are usually used for adding in extra information. This doesn't seem fitting for a love poem, but it follows Donne's scientific style. He plays around with the language in this stanza also, causing a very witty effect. Clever wit was important for metaphysical poets at this time, as most of the poems around were sonnets which could sometimes be maybe too sweet, or even sickly, and so they wanted to provide a witty alternative for people of similar intellect to enjoy.


He describes their love as 'so refin'd, That' even themselves 'know not what it is' He means that it is so pure and fantastic that even they themselves cannot comprehend it. Donne's language becomes more scientific as the poem continues he uses words such as 'therefore' which are not very romantic, and he explores with ideas such as their souls will not be separated but will be stretched out like hammered gold. Although this is quite technical, it also sounds quite beautiful as gold is such a precious metal.


He also, for the two penultimate stanzas, toys with the idea that their souls are connected like compasses. She is the steady 'foot' which is 'fixt' which 'makes no show To move, but doth, if the'other doe.' If they are compasses, it means that they are never properly separated, but if 'the other far doth rome, It leanes, and hearkens after it, And grows erect, as it comes home.' The compasses are personified here to give this imagery more meaning. The last line of this stanza is quite ambiguous, as it is not clear whether the word 'erect' is being used as sexual imagery, or whether it just means they stand up tall and proud, as they are together once more. Comparing their love to compasses is strange in a love poem as it seems very unconventional, as compasses are often associated with maths and technical things, and they are not exactly pleasing to look at.


The end of the poem refers to the circle he makes around her and how she makes him 'end, where' he 'begunne.' This gives a sense of completeness, and eternity for their love. He is also saying that she is at the centre if his life, and everything he does revolves around her.


The structure and rhyming pattern of the poem is very tight, and it has an analytical feeling to it. This may symbolise the togetherness of their souls.


"Sonnet XVIII" by Shakespeare also takes an unconventional approach to love, however it is not as extreme as Donne's. His style of writing is very different, and the language he uses is much easier to understand, however this takes away none of the effect of his writing. He starts his sonnet with 'Shall I compare thee,' a tone which seems almost lazy and pondering. He goes on to abandon this idea as he decides he cannot compare his lover with summer as she is even better than this. This is an unconventional approach as usually poets would go on to say yes, and write a list of comparisons of the beauties of each. However the first half of the poem still goes on to talk about summer, and all the weaknesses of it. He describes how 'summer's lease hath all too short a date' meaning that summer does not last long, as its lease will run out, and summer will suddenly just be gone. Shakespeare creates an impressive image of summer, calling the sun 'the eye of heaven', and then goes on to say that 'she' is even better that this. He describes how summer can either be too hot, or too cold, or sometimes 'his gold complexion dimm'd' meaning that it can be very cloudy and unclear. The second half of the sonnet goes on to talk about her, and in a way he does go on to compare her to summer as he describes how she is better than it. It is almost like an argument, as he gives the beautiful imagery of summer and then shoots his points down as he talks about his lover.


He talks of her 'eternal summer' which represents her eternal beauty. He talks of how she owes it to the world to show her beauty eternally, and how it will never be forgotten or seized by death. He has captured her beauty and memory in this sonnet, and within this she will live on in the 'lines' of the poem. He finishes his sonnet in the usual Shakespeare style with an exquisite rhyming couplet, which is really touching. She is immortal through his lines of verse, and this is a lovely thought. I prefer "Sonnet XVIII" by Shakespeare as I prefer the language he uses, because I think it is much more beautiful than the language used by Donne. I think that this is important for a love poem, as the beauty of the language reflects the beauty of the love. However I do think that Donne uses some very interesting ideas in his poem, which makes it slightly more personal, I also like the way he often refers to their souls. I don't think that a love poem should be too taxing to read though, and I do not think that it should be written with the intention to make the reader think too much. I also prefer the references to nature rather than the reference to compasses and science, as I think it is much more fitting for a love poem. Overall I just think that Shakespeare has a much more flowing style of writing, and a very gentle tone. I would love to receive this sonnet from someone whom I loved.

The East West Schism of 1054 occurred due to centuries of tensions between the Greek and Roman Church. The eventual split between the two denominations cannot be pinpointed to one specific event but a built up of hostility which occurred as a result of many small problems between the groups. In the period building up to the Schism certain individuals and events provided fuel for the development of arguments within the church. The Schism had a significant impact on the church and effected the respective development of the Roman Catholic or West church and the Eastern Orthodox or East Church.


The cause of the Schism varied significantly, doctrinal differences between the two denominations began to arise and cause conflict between the leaders of the church. The issue regarding the sacredness of saints arose within the church. The Greeks under Emperor Leo believed no reverence should be given to the saints and with this removed all images of saints from their churches. Rome objected to this behavior, which in turn caused arguments between Emperor Leo and the Bishop of Rome.


It was not only the issue of saints that plagued differences within the doctrinal teachings of the churches. The nature of Christ also caused divergence within the Church. The council of Ephesus in 41CE and the Council of Chalcedon in 415CE saw a dispute over the nature of Christ between the Greek and Roman groups. During this the Greek Church developed their own ecclesial structure in which they defined their own opinion of the divine and human nature of Christ. This caused uproar within the church and had a notable effect on the eventual Schism. The council of Chalcedon continued to be an issue of unrest within the church with numerous councils and individuals arguing over the doctrines created, this included the Second Council of Constantinople and Emperor Zeno.


Differences within the culture of the two groups had an effect on the nature of the Schism. The church had tried to adopt both the Roman and Greek culture into it's liturgies but found this impossible. Variations in the groups remained too important to be ignored. The West had been suspicious at the way in which Photius had gained power within the church. When Ignatius refused to accept his punishment quietly Pope Nicholas I joined in the iconoclastic controversy and supported Ignatius. This resulted in tensions between the Pope and Emperor and saw the church dividing into groups depending on whom they chose too support.


The authority of the Pope and the intervention of the Emperor had a considerable effect on the Schism. The Pope or Bishop of Rome had always been the head of the Christian Church starting with the first Popes, Peter and Christ. Yet during the lead up to the Schism the East rejected the importance of the Pope and instead the Bishops became the leaders of the church and wanted to make Constantinople a important city within the church, trying to overthrow the power of Rome. Emperor Constantine (74 7CE) had a substantial role in the division of the church due to his interference In 1 Constantine had released the Edict of Milan which saw Christianity becoming a legal religion, after this he became more involved with the affairs of the church. After Constantine's involvement, Emperor Constane V (741-775) followed in the example of Constantine and became involved within the practices of the church. Constane V persuaded the split within the church, with 8 bishops siding with him. Those who refused to comply with his demands were persecuted against.


Liturgical reasons between the two groups were the most important factors that lead to the split within the churches. The Nicean Prayer, or the Filioque controversy largely effected the division within the church. In 5 the first Council of Nicea was called. At this council the divinity of Jesus was defined and a common creed, which characterized the beliefs of the church, was composed. (See appendix). Originally this creed did not include the line " We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, Who proceeds from the Father and the Son." this was included later by the Roman church. The introduction of this statement affirmed the Trinity and the divinity of Jesus, which had been previous denied by priest such as Arians. The Greeks, however, where appalled that the Roman church would include a statement not agreed on by representatives of both churches, as they believed that no alteration should be made without consent. The council of Nicean, while being started with the best intentions left the church bitterly split with the Western church proclaiming the Nicean creed and the Eastern Church flatly rejected the creed or removing the controversial statement.


Along with the Filioque controversy, the timing and celebration of Easter caused discord within the church. This was the earliest record of controversy and conflict within the two groups of the church. In the second century Easter was celebrated on the same day as the Jewish Passover, Rome however believed that it should be practiced the Sunday after this. Pope Anicetus and Polycarp agreed to disagree on the issue yet 0 years later Victor of Rome threatened to break all communication with the Bishops unless they abandoned their practices and conform to his wishes. This event has been identified as the beginning of the split within the church some 00 years before the actual Schism.


Included in the liturgical reasons for the Schism was the mass that was celebrated by the churches. The West church continued to celebrate there mass in Latin, which had been the custom for centuries, where the East wanted to rejoice in the language of the congregation. Along with this the type of Eucharist used by the church was debated. The Greek Church had been using leavened bread which the Roman church had been using unleavened bread. The original debate grew into a further problem when the churches began to argue over the actual point of consecration of the Holy Gifts, consequences of sin and the importance of making penance after death in purgatory. This saw both churches moving further apart and rejecting the others teachings.


The split finally occurred in 1054 with Cardinal Humbert excommunicated the Eastern Church on 16 July 1054. The church in Constantinople replied excommunicating the West. After the fourth crusade in 104 the Pope acknowledge the split within the church and it became official, the Christian church had official split into the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church.


The division with the church had a substantial effect on the development of the church in the West. It was the differences between the church and the practices that the Roman church valued that led to other developments within the Western Church. During the lead up to the Schism the Roman church had kept the traditional values and kept their conservative approach to the faith. After the split the Roman church did not change to suit the needs of the people, rather enforcing their beliefs on the congregation. During this time the Roman church had become corrupt with the sale of indulgences to those with money or those who participated within the crusades. It was due to these factors, the conservative approach and corruption that the western church faced further splits in the Reformation.


The Reformation occurred in 1517 and saw the Roman Catholic Church divide into further with several protestant groups. The split within the Western Church mimicked that between the East church and the Western church. The basic doctrinal disagreements that led to a division included arguments over the nature of God, place of faith, the role of the priest, the value of indulgences and the use of relics and icons. The majority of these had been previous seen within the Schism of 1054. Along with these new issues arose such as Idealism, due to the rise of Nationalism and the Renaissance, Weakness in the church and corruption made the Catholic Church less credible. Unlike the Schism however, individuals were responsible for the protestant religions. These included Martin Luther, John Calvin and King Henry VIII. Without the Schism of 1054 the reformation would not have been able to occur and the protestant religions would not have been born.


The Catholic Church remained a conservative sect in relation to the growth of the Eastern Orthodox Church and the new Protestant groups. The Schisms lead the way for developments such as the Council of Trent in 1545-156. The Council of Trent defined the doctrines of the Catholic faith, which had been left shaky after the Schism. It brought discipline into the church, reforms and in general left the door open for Vatican I and Vatican II which developed the church into the modern day church we see today.
