The television industry would have you believe it's the second coming. Retailers preach the scriptures of higher resolution and digital video and audio quality, while consumers are shepherded by consumer magazines looking out for their best interests, providing previews and coming attraction for the self-made home "theatre-phile." What is the excitement about? High Definition Television or HDTV for short.

High definition television broadcasting is sending ripples throughout the television industry's pond. Since 188, the industry has been developing a system of high definition televisions in order to receive digital quality broadcasts, the next revolutionary step in home entertainment.

After a decade of research and development, the television networks thought that the world was ready for HDTV broadcasts--perhaps a bit premature; as yet there are still several bugs to be worked out. On November 8, 18, America's first HDTV broadcasts aired. CBS (through New York City affiliate WCBS-TV) broadcast a Buffalo Bills vs. New York Jets football game in the HDTV format, even though the number of digital televisions in the market could be counted on one hand. Even though the viewing experience was well, less the revolutionary, an indelible impression was made. The idea behind HDTV is to increase the quality of the video picture by increasing the lines of revolution projected. The national standard for video display, the NTSC (National Television System Committee), uses 55 of interlaced video running at thirty frames per second. (Cripps )

Interlaced video

Each frame of a video image is divided into two fields consisting of odd and even numbered lines. To display the frame, an electron beam scans each line of the first field across the face of the cathode ray tube (TV screen), then goes back and scans the line of the second field in between the lines of the first field. The new, digital format allows for 1080 lines of interlaced resolution or 70 lines of progressive resolution at 4, 0, or 60 frames per second.

Progressive video

Each frame of video is scanned sequentially, through one pass of scanning. This option is unavailable in the standard NTSC format. These enhancements are only available through high definition video feeds. In order to produce a high definition video feed, the program must first be filmed in high definition, and then broadcast via the UHF band (that's right, grab your rabbit ears). The way this is done is by "up-converting" the NTSC format for analog broadcast. But now, in the early stages of this new technology, this benefit cannot be fully appreciated.

Also now in the early stages of HDTV, there are some severe weak points that need to be addressed soon in order to make HDTV a possibility. The main issue that needs addressing is the broadcast itself. Because the signal is broadcast through the UHF band, it is subject to atmospheric interference. For instance, the WCBS-TV tower in New York is stationed atop the Empire State Building. The broadcast from the tower bounces off the other buildings around it in the city, causing an effect called "multipath." In digital television, multipath creates multiple "ghost images" on the screen, disrupting the viewing experience. Another problem dealing with the UHF broadcast is that the broadcast signal is a directional signal. Strong signals coming from proxy stations could disrupt one another, and since all stations will be looking to place their towers atop the highest masses (for clearer broadcasts), there will be considerable interference until antennae are created that will be able to discern the different signals and translate them into desirable pictures. However, these problems are small compared to the one glaring problem networks are facing.

The main problem to contend with is a lack of programming from the networks spearheading the conversion to HDTV. This lack of programming has been caused by the haste of the industry to put the product out before working out the bugs; leaping before looking so to speak. Unfortunately, this has caused major annoyances for those fortunate enough to have been exposed to HDTV related programming. Some of these annoyances could be construed into skepticism, which will be either erased or indulged over time. It may seem that there is nothing good to come out of this desired conversion to digital programming, but there are some extremely positive points that may outweigh all of the early disappointment that has been experienced with HDTV. Obviously, the picture quality is so enhanced that television viewing will become an entirely new experience. One viewer said that HDTV would force make-up artistry change in order to keep up with the detail that the new sets present. Another said that it made watching television like "viewing through a screen door." But there is more to it than that.

Now networks will have an explosion of time that needs to be programmed for because of the expansion of channels that a tower can broadcast. Whether the amount produced proves to be a godsend, or the pike that television impales itself upon remains to be seen. Hopefully, the viewer will be exposed to a variety of programming never experienced before instead of being subjected to copycat programs and infomercials. Only time will tell.

Apparently, there will be a second coming; an evolution in entertainment, which is far more complex and grossly more expensive than anything the industry has faced to date. But like the transfer from black and white to color, the industry hopes to bring to the audience a picture so captivating that it will be hard to move from our seat once we sit down and start watching. Herbert Hoover was in the White House and millions upon millions of stocks were being traded on the New York Stock Exchange. On October 4, 1; people sold their stocks more furiously than before. As many as 1.1 billion shares were traded on the New York Stock Exchange on October, 1 (, 17). During this period, the market value of all stocks jumped from twenty-seven billion dollars to sixty-seven and a half billion dollars (, 17)! But on the October th, Black Tuesday, so many shares were sold that the market collapsed completely.

When the stock market crashed, President Hoover attempted to prevent it from deepening business activity, wages, and spending (1, 5). Immediately, it affected the poor and the middle class, who kept their entire savings in banks and savings and loans. Their financial institutions closed due to the fact that they invested their depositors funds within the stock market. All of this, plus poor banking practices and a government that allowed businesses to do whatever they wished, were determined to be the main causes of the Great Depression. Prior to October 1, Americans began to realize that they were not living through a mere monetary panic. They were in fact, trapped. It was to be the greatest financial crisis of their era.

First came the dramatic drop of stock prices. The years 10 and 11 were marked by serious declines in industrial production and exports. By 1, these consequences were reflected in massive unemployment (, ). Hoovers tactics basically stunk, and the depression gradually worsened during 10 (1, 5). Hoovers attempt to ward off a depression rather than simply waiting for the economy to readjust represented a major new departure in American public policy (1, 5). President Hoover had also conceded to farm organizations and farm state congressmen, to create a federal way to increase prices of farm commodities (1, 4). In addition to these trends at home, the United States was affected by an international economic crisis (, np). What millions of people realized during the four years of Hoovers presidency was the efforts to relieve unemployment and social distress such as hunger, homelessness, or medical rises, were inadequate in dealing with a situation of such wide scope as the Great Depression (, -4).

Several weaknesses in the economy, though, seemed to be operating. There were maladjustments created by technological changes, unequal distribution of the national income, stock market abuse, weaknesses in the architecture of large corporations, and questionable policies of the federal government (, 15). By 1, two hundred large corporations in the United States controlled forty-nine percent of all corporate assets and received forty-three percent of all corporate income (, 16). A second way corporate structure contributed to the Depression was through the abuse of holding companies. Holding companies were those that held stock in hundreds of subsidiary corporations, following a practice known as pyramiding, especially in the field of public utilities (, 16-17). Oligopoly contributed to the Depression by tending to lead to price rigidity and tended to set arbitrary administered prices. Those prices were those not determined by supply and demand (, 16). To some extent, excessive speculation on the stock market contributed to the outbreak of the Great Depression (, 17).By late 11, Americans economic condition had become desperate. It worsened during the next year as well. Farm prices dropped by fifty-five percent between 1 and 1 which lowered farm income and worsened the burden of fixed debt most farmers were carrying (1, ). Hundreds of thousands of farm families, many from the Dust Bowl states, lost their farms and thus became seasonal farm workers (1, 10). The Dust Bowl was a fifty million acre area stretching from Texas to North Dakota (5, 15). During the darkest hours of the depression, farmers and workers that grew up there became so desperate that some observers believed the country was ripe for violent revolution (5, 17). A terrible drought, that lasted for 7 years, struck the Midwest in 11 (5, 15). The drought shriveled all crops in the Southwest (6, np). During the Dust Bowl; men, women and children took to jalopies and drove onto the Old West for work (6, np). Farms that lost money, were seized by banks for nonpayment of loans and were auctioned off to the highest bidder (5, 11). During the cold months, people put newspapers under their clothes to keep the cold off. Others walked along with cardboard stuffed into their shoes to cover up the holes (5, 11). The very symbol of the depression were breadlines; a block long line of people waiting to get free food from missions or welfare agencies (5, 11-1).

On November 1, Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected to the first of four terms as President of the United States. In March 1, there were thirteen million unemployed Americans, and almost every bank had been closed. Within months of the election, Roosevelt declared a national bank holiday. Within days, he rushed legislation, and put the Emergency Bank Act of 1 into effect (1, ). The president communicated to the people by explaining his actions in chatty, radio talks fireside chats (1, ). In his first one hundred days he proposed, and Congress enacted, a sweeping program to bring recovery to business and agriculture, he also brought relief to the unemployed, and to those in danger of losing farms and homes, the establishment of the Tennessee Valley Authority reform (1, ). The Tennessee Valley Authority (T.V.A.) launched an ambitious construction project designed to harness the Tennessee River and provide electrical power to much of the rural south (5, 1). Hope, for the time being, replaced despair. Critics fell silent, and Americans of all classes and conditions, from business moguls to dirt farmers, rallied around what the newspaper people, called The New Deal (1, ). The Brains Trust of three professors, Raymond Moley, Rexford G. Tugwell, and Adolph A. Berle, contributed substantially to the shaping of the New Deal program that emerged during the First Hundred Days (1, 40). By 15, the nation had achieved some measure of recovery, but businessmen and bankers were turning more and more against Roosevelts New Deal. They feared his experiments, were appalled because he had taken the nation off the gold standard, allowed deficits, and disliked the concessions to labor (1, np). But thirty-two agencies, corporations, administrations, projects, acts, and leagues were created all during F.D.R.s four-term presidency (1, np).

In 16, Franklin Roosevelt was reelected President for a second term. By 17, the unemployment statistics, which first had begun to recede, now approached the 10-million mark (5, 4). Even during the frustrating years of the depression, however, people found ways to have fun. Family entertainment had to be inexpensive. Chess, checkers, and card games enjoyed great popularity (5, 8). All families enjoyed listening to radio programs. The favorites among the depression-weary people were comedy and musical-variety shows (5, ). For a special treat, a family could go to the movies. Ticket prices ranged from 10¢ to twenty-five cents. More people saw the lavish Civil War drama Gone with the Wind than any other movie of its time. The movie fantasy The Wizard of Oz remains a favorite today (5, 0).

Bridget Jones' Diary

Bridget Jones Diary is a film produced by Helen Fielding that is based on the novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. But just as she thinks that her mother has possibly found the man of her dreams Mr Mark Darcy turns around to reveal a bright green reindeer jumper. His mother has also dressed him.

In this scene Camera angles play a big part in portraying the anxiety of Bridget when Mark turns around and also plays a big part in keeping the audience wondering. On the verge of meeting Mark we only see his back. Slow motion filming is used when her turns around.

Music is also used to create the scene for their first meeting. When Bridget is walking towards Mark Romantic music is played in the background to create the mood for a romantic meeting but immediately stops when Bridget is faced with Mark and his reindeer jumper.

Its is after her meeting that we realise Bridget is one for being embarrassed not only by her own self doing but by others opinions on her.

She feels humiliated and embarrassed when she over hears Darcy make fun of her and critisise her on her drinking and for being ridiculously dressed by her mother.

This situation is similar to that experience of Elizabeth when she Firsts meets Darcy and is humiliated by his comments and thoughts on her mother and herelf.

In the scene of Kafka's launch it is has been built up to be the point at which Bridget is to impress Daniel.

While entering the advice of friends to "ooze intelligence, circulate and introduce people with thoughtful detail" runs through Bridget's mind.

When inside Bridget's usual self embarrassment begins to show once again when she try's to act intelligent in front of a group of men only to be shut down and embarrassed when asked a question on a topic she has no idea of.

When finally out of the circle Bridget runs into Mark Darcy. Their meeting is kept brief and insulting to both parties. It is then which Perpetua asks to be introduced. The technique of a prediction scene is played where Bridget introduces her real feelings towards them both. This also lets the viewer know of her immature attitude.

The actual scene of introduction is then played and instead of Darcy being embarrassed at Bridget's introduction, Bridget is played on by Darcy's introduction of Bridget to Natasha.

"This is Bridget Jones and she used to play naked in my paddling pool"

This only the beginning of Bridget's embarrassment. It is then when she goes to introduce the Launch of Kafka's Motorbike where the mike won't turn on and Bridget is forced to shout "Oi, oi!"

Camera angles here capture the faces of Mark, Daniel, Natasha and the author of the book being introduced. In these shots facial expression show how shocked they are by her idea to scream except Daniel whom slightly smiles. This shows how humorous he believes Bridget to be.

Camera shots like these are taken to put emphasis on the important and significant people in the scene.

While onstage she proves to be a constant stuff up when unable to introduce Mr Fitzherbert.

Before this the technique of her conscience talking, saying "Tits pervert, tits pervert" explains why she stutters and has so much trouble getting the right words out.

We then see Bridget flop off the stage and grab a drink. This shows her incapability to cope with the embarrassment she has caused herself and the thought that she has gone against everything that her friends warned her not to do once again.

In the scene of Bridget and Daniel arriving at a hotel in the country for their mini holiday break brings forward the tension felt between Mark and Daniel when Bridget and him are met by Mark and Natasha by accident.

The camera then crosses to the boat scene where we see Natasha and Mark in one paddling boat being serious and working. While we see Bridget in one boat and Daniel in another mucking around reciting stupid poetry. It is then when Daniel falls out of his boat; laughing swearing and being noisy that we get a close up view of Bridgets face while she is laughing. This emphasise her happy facial expression and constant laughter.

The camera almost immediately crosses to a close up of Mark's face, which reveals a sadness, envy and a longing to be having fun. Natasha then remarks "How childish, really." Mark agrees out of jealousy.

In the Closing we see Bridget chasing Darcy through the snow and around the block after he has read her diary which insults him.

The camera angles often change in this short scene. At first we are taken at a further angle as Bridget is running to show how small she is. It also crosses to the back of her to get a close up of her bottom to show us that she is running in her undies. Very inappropriate clothing for the weather. This shows that she is determined to catch him and that she doesn't care how cold it is or what she looks like.

The camera then crosses to a pair of old ladies. This technique of including others is to signify how awkward and unusual the situation and the stupidity of what she is doing. Also to show the appropriate clothing that should be worn.

When Bridget finally finds Darcy the camera looks at her head on with a full-length view. This is done to again emphasise her stupidity but also to show how hard she has tried to find him despite the way she is dressed.

When Mark and Bridget begin to kiss the camera takes different angles to show the length of the kiss and just how loving and compassionate it really is. He then wraps his coat around her, this is a sign of possession, security and assurance that he will look after her love her and provide for her.

Snowflakes falling is a technique used to represent softness and to show the time period, that twelve months have passed. It also resembles the coldness, but how warm it is when they are together. While she was running it was windy, however when they are together everything is still.

Pirate Party / Treasure Hunt

The treasure, which I had concealed under one of the picnic tables, was in a chest Id made of an old cardboard box and decorated with skull and cross bones, etc. It consisted of plastic hand hooks, eye patches, bandanas, and gold coins (chocolates). shows eighty-two cases of people who were sentenced to death but were later freed

race, wealth, sex, and religion.They believe that the system values white lives more than

black lives, the wealthy more than the poor, and men more than women (Death Penalty

and Sentencing Information, 17).On the topic of religion, they point to the Fifth

Commandment, "Thou shalt not murder." There are many organizations whose goals are

abolishing capital punishment.Among them are People for Abolition Faiths Against the

Death Penalty (PFADP), National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty (NCADP),

National Petition to End the Death Penalty (NPEDP), and Citizens United for Alternatives

to the Death Penalty (CUADP).These organizations have devoted their time, efforts, and

lives to abolish capital punishment and feel very strongly on the issue.

Advocates of the death penalty feel that executions are the appropriate punishment

for certain criminals committing specific crimes.Public opinion is pro-death penalty

(Foster, 1), but there isn't really a specific group of people who are advocates.

Someone's belief depends mainly on religion, morals, and how one was raised.Advocates

state that with no death penalty and only life without parole, there is no punishment for

mentioned earlier, that focuses on alternatives to the death penalty.One alternative is that

"persons convicted of capital murder should serve a minimum of 5 years in prison before

the possibility of consideration for parole," (CUADP, 1).Another is that a portion of

the prisoner's earnings while working in prison should go to pay for his/her life in prison.

There are other solutions to capital punishment, such as life in prison, but then the issue of

overcrowding in prison is brought to attention.Another solution is making the cost of

capital punishment so expensive and time consuming that the public won't support it

(Foster, 1).This has already been used in arguments against the death penalty, just as

it was in my paper.A solution to lower the number of death penalty cases, but not

completely abolish it, is a three-judge panel.A three-judge panel is a panel of three judges

that replace the jury.Legislature in Denver, Colorado created this system after July 1,

15 (Foster, 1). Advocates of the death penalty don't have a solution to the death

penalty because it is their solution.They feel that if all murderers would instantly die after

murdering, they would kill only if they wished to die themselves.

In this section I intend to evaluate a few of the solutions to capital punishment

from above.The issue of life without parole can be argued by cost.Right now, it is said

that capital punishment is more expensive (at least million dollars) than life without

parole (1 million dollars for up to fifty years).Although, it is estimated by advocates that

it will cost $1. million - $.6 million more than equivalent death penalty cases (Death

Penalty and Sentencing Information, 17).Life in prison also makes overcrowding an

issue, like I mentioned earlier.Every year, the prisons get more and more crowded.The

three-judge panel system has its flaws too."There has been four to five times more death

penalty cases since the three-judge panel has come into being," (Foster, 1) This could

be good or bad depending on your viewpoint of capital punishment.The three-judge

panel also increases the cost of the cases.A solution that I came up with was to allow the

victim's families to decide whether or not the death penalty should be an option.After

evaluating this, I decided that it would be wrong because most of the families would just

be looking for anyone to be punished for the crime as long as it was someone.Being

distraught, they might overlook any evidence pointing to innocence.I feel that if all

evidence shows that the convicted person is the murderer with 100% certainty, capital

punishment should be enforced.If there are any doubts at all, it should be life without

parole or a very long sentence.As said earlier, capital punishment is full of debate and

controversy.It will probably never be made completely legal or be completely abolished

How important are the issues love, obedience and duty in the play?

"O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?

Deny thy father and refuse thy name,

These famous lines from Romeo and Juliet, demonstrate the importance of the three issues love, obedience and duty in the play. They illustrate the mindset of Romeo and Juliet, and their willingness to defy their parents and duty to their families, in order to be with each other.

Friends Romeo abandons Mercutio and Benvolio after the feast, to go to Juliets garden. And ruler Romeo returns to Verona for Juliet, after being exiled by the Prince.

The love that the County Paris feels for Juliet is, however, contractual. He does not actually know Juliet, only her family and what she represents. Paris looks to marry the Capulet name. This is apparent in the way that the marriage is discussed, between Lord Capulet and Paris, even before Paris and Juliet meet. (I, ii)

Of course, Lord Capulet agrees as the County Paris is "a gentleman of noble parentage… (III, v, 17) and he stands to gain from the arrangement.

Both obedience and duty are presented in this play, however both Romeo and Juliet do not fulfill their duty to their families, and prove to be disobedient of their parents' wishes as a result of their love for each other.

Obedience, or rather disobedience is perhaps best illustrated through the forbidden love of Romeo and Juliet. During the balcony scene (II, ii) Juliet asks Romeo to "defy your father" and indicates that she is prepared to "no longer be a Capulet", indicating that she will disobey her parent's wishes in order to be with Romeo.

Until her meeting with Romeo, Juliet was obedient, even agreeing to consider marrying a man she had never met. (I, iii, 8-100) But her love for Romeo is a cause for change, and she feels she should obey her heart over her parents.

Duty to one's family is prominent in Romeo and Juliet and both feel a duty to their families. Romeo even states,

"My name, dear saint, is hateful to myself,

Because it is an enemy to thee;" (II, ii, 55), indicating that he realizes the two must not be together as their families are enemies. But Romeo and Juliet, cannot contain their feelings, and decide that fulfilling to their own needs is perhaps more important.

Previous to meeting Juliet, Romeo felt it his duty to defend his family name. But in Act III, scene I Romeo refuses a challenge from Tybalt, as his love for Juliet means he cannot attack a "good Capulet".

While duty and obedience are important issues in Romeo and Juliet, none is as important as love. Both Romeo and Juliet are unable to fulfill their duties and obey the wishes of others. Their love results in both fulfilling duty to themselves and obeying their own hearts.

The powerful nature of love in Romeo and Juliet is perhaps best seen in the way it is described, or, more accurately, the way descriptions of it so consistently fail to capture its entirety.

"But my true love is grown to such excess

I cannot sum up sum of half my wealth." (II, vi, -4)
