Lord of the Flies

Cry of the Hunters.

Chapter 1 brings the culmination of all things evil. Following the murder of Piggy and the capture of the twins, Samneric by the tribe, Ralph is left alone, with the realisation that Jack and his followers have taken the final step over the line from civilisation to savagery. Ralph attempts to convince himself that the tribe cannot be as evil as they seem. To someone like Ralph, who has attempted to maintain some sense of their old life, the descendance into unrestrained barbarism is too much to accept, and yet somehow he realises that his controlled approach to their situation is actually a threat to Jack, which must be eliminated.

While wondering the forest, Ralph comes upon the skull of the pig, to him it seems to symbolise the wickedness of the situation, and he smashes it

"A sick fear and rage swept him. Fiercely he hit put at the filthy thing in front of him that bobbed like a toy and came back, still grinning into his face, so that he lashed and cried out in loathing."

. This contrasts with the earlier smashing of the conch, which throughout the book has symbolised order, reason and democracy.

Fear of the Demons of the night drives Ralph back to towards the camp, where he has to face the fact that Samneric have been "converted"

"Accepted this new fact like a wound. Samneric were part of the tribe now."

While confronting them, as they guard the castle rock, in a desperate attempt to win them back and end his total isolation, he is horrified to hear that Jack and Roger are planning to hunt him down and "do him in" the next day.

" 'Theyre going to hunt you tomorrow.

'But why?

'I dunno. And Ralph, Jack, the Chief, says itll be dangerous

-and weve got to be careful and throw our spears like at a pig"

Ralph attempts to pressurise the twins for exactly what Jack and Roger intend to do to him. However he is only given the information that "Roger has sharpened a stick at both ends"

This phrase haunts Ralphs thoughts as he desperately attempts to understand the significance of it. Although repeated throughout the chapter, the reader is never reminded that a stick was sharpened at both ends when the pig had been killed and his head stuck on a pole.

Having sworn Samneric to silence over his hiding place for the night, in a thicket close to the tribes camp, Ralph awakes to his final betrayal, as he realises that one of the twins has disclosed his secret to Roger. However he believes himself to be safe as he wormed his way into dense thicket. It is then that Ralph has to accept that all sense of decency has left the tribe as they rain down two huge boulders on to him in an attempt to smash him as they had Piggy. This failing they set fire to the thicket.

" Smoke was seeping through the branches in white and yellow wisps, the patch of blue sky over head turned to the colour of a storm cloud and then smoke billowed round him"

This begin what is literally Ralphs desperate run for his life," Ralph was running with the swiftness of fear through the undergrowth", hunted down by a group of boys that had formally been his friends, for being the voice of reason.

There is a feeling that Jack and his choir do not particularly wish to be rescued, as their new life has set them free from their regimented, disciplined previous existence. Therefore Ralph and previously Piggy who desperately wanted to go home, form an unpalatable conscience, which keeps dragging the group back

The characteristic, which overrides in Ralph, is his belief that good in human nature will somehow prevail. He never really loses faith in Samneric even to the last, believing that they will allow him through their lines or ignore him if they cam upon him. "It might be Samneric who would pretend not to see and say nothing"

The last pages of the chapter bring the reader the relief from the terrors of the chase in the form of the British Navy." A naval officer stood on the sand, looking down at Ralph in astonishment."

Lockart 1

Ludwig van Beethoven, probably the most well known name in music history to say the least, was brilliant. He practically redefined western classical music by transforming it into a powerful expression of philosophical thoughts and feelings. He was committed to the principle of Classicism-but not to every one of its manifestations, and certainly not to the mood behind it. (Listen 14). There was excitement in his music.A distinctiveness that divides it from Mozart and Hayden. He took music to such musical heights as to make a critic say, "All arts aspire to condition of music."(top-biography.com) Just few of his recognizable pieces include Fur Elise and Moonlight Sonata. From these pieces is how the majority of people today know the German musical genius. But a closer look will be observed. There is much to know about the life of the eccentric and almost mysteriously complex character.

Beethoven was born in 1770 in Bonn, Germany, to Johann and Maria Magdalena van Beethoven. His father was a musician and wanted Beethoven to become the next Mozart. His father taught him piano and violin. Some interesting found facts are that Beethoven's education was not continued beyond elementary school. He was practically illiterate in math.

At age 17 Beethoven made his first trip to Vienna but he learned that his mother became deathly ill.He returned immediately. It was not until five years later in 17 he returned to Vienna, this time making it his home. There he studied under another of Classical's greatest composers, Hayden, for about one year.In the relationship between the two there were troubles- maybe professional jealousy caused the problems.Beethoven turned to other teachers when Hayden went to London. He studied with

Lockart

Albrechtsberger, the best-known counterpoint teacher in Vienna. He then studied with Salieri who helped him in setting Italian words to music.Beethoven was soon acclaimed as a powerful virtuoso pianist, playing his own compositions at the palaces on the music-loving aristocracy of that city.

Around 180 he realized that he was losing his hearing but continued to compose and attempted to keep it a secret. This kept him from making a living in the traditional manner, by performing.By 181 he became severely depressed over his hearing loss. This cause in his life is reflected in a strange document called the "Heiligenstadt Testament" after the town where it was written. It is half a proclamation of artistic ideals, half suicide note.Beethoven eventually overcame his depression in 180 and wrote the first of his truly powerful and individual symphonies, The Third (Erotica).Even after losing his hearing he continued to compose. He seemed to live for his art alone. He wrote in his journal, " There is much to be done on earth, do it soon! I cannot carry on the every day life I am living; art demands this sacrifice too.Rest, diversion, amusement-only so that I can function more powerfully in my art." (Beethoven 1814).

His domestic life was chaotic; one anecdote has him standing in the middle of the floor and pouring water over himself to cool of in summer and being asked by his landlord to leave. He changed lodgings an average of once a year. All three of his brothers lived in Vienna and they often "came to blows" in the street.Beethoven became known in his later years as an eccentric.

Towards the end of his life the Italians Opera had become popular and he found himself and his music out of style, but his music always reigned supreme by critics and

Lockart

audiences. He died in Vienna in 187 with over 10,000 people in attendance at his funeral.

Beethoven had an immense need to receive and give affection yet never married. He seemed to give every depth of his very soul to his music and left nothing out. That is probably why he has made such a permanent mark on people even today. His complexity and deepness was expressed in beautiful sound.

Terry vs. Adams (15)

A group of black Americans in Fort Bend County, Texas are suing the Jaybird Democratic Association. They are suing because blacks are not allowed to be a part of the Jaybird Democratic Association. The Jaybird Democratic Association was organized in 188.The association indorses the democratic primary for the county office. The organization does not allow blacks to be in it.The balloting is only open to the white public that is qualified to vote. The Negroes were granted a declaratory judgment that Negroes be allowed to have a say in the association by the District Court. Then that judgment was overturned by the Court of Appeals because the association was not an "action under color of state law".

In the Supreme Court the evidence showed that all rules of the association are made by its members or by the Executive Committee. To be a member the rules say that you have to be part of the white voting population. In the beginning of May of every election year they hold the Jaybird primaries. The costs of all aspects of the primaries are paid for by the Jaybird Democratic Association. The rule of the election follows the state laws pertaining to primaries.

Ever since the organization was created the person indorsed by the Jaybirds almost always wins.In fact most of the time the only Democratic candidates in the election are the Jaybirds. The continuous success over such a period of time has been the result of action by practically the entire qualified electorate of the county, barring Negroes.

The issues is whether the Jaybird Democratic Association of Fort Bend County, Texas, by excluding Negroes from its primaries, has denied to Negro citizens of the county a right to vote secured by the Fifteenth Amendment. The Court decided that the Democratic Party can not prohibited a race of people from being part of their party. They decided that even though they pay for everything out of their pocket they are still a political party whose activities fall within the Fifteenth Amendment. That means that the Jaybird Democratic Association does not have the right to not allow Negroes to be a part of the association.

The only dissenting opinion was that of Justice Minton. He feels that Justice Black would have the court redress the wrong even if it was individual action alone. He also thinks that Justice Frankfurter recognizes that it must be state action, but he seems to think it is enough to constitute state action if a state official participates in the Jaybid primary. Finally Justice Clark seems to recognize that state action must be shown. He finds state action in assumption, not in facts

Justice Minton feels that there is no compulsion upon a person who receives he endorsement of the Jaybird Democratic Association of Fort Bend County, Texas for a particular office to run for that office or any other office. In the event such indorse of the association does desire to run for such office, he may do so but if he does so run for such office, he must himself file his application with the Executive Chairman or Committee of the Democratic Party for the position on the Democratic Party ballot for the July primary of such Democratic Party, and must himself pay the fee as provided by law.

Justices Clark, Reed, and Jackson had concurring opinion. They all thought that the issue is whether the Jaybird Democratic Association of Fort Bend County, Texas, by excluding Negroes from its primaries, has denied to Negro citizens of the county a right to vote secured by the Fifteenth Amendment.

The court made the right decision in making the Jaybird Democratic Association allow Negroes to be a part of the organization. It is the right decision because nobody should have the right to not allow a specific race to be part of its group. In the case of Brown vs. the Board of Education the Supreme Court found that the Board of Education was not allowed to separate people due to race.So in the case involving the Jaybird Association the Court had to make the association allow blacks in The Jaybird Democratic Association.

"Go ahead and rip off anything you like, as long as you acknowledge that you ripped it from me" (William Blank). This is a quote I found that reminds me of everything my family has given me. My family is the most important thing in my life to me. From the moment I was born up until now, as a young adult, it is unbelievable how much they have given me. They have taught me morals, principles, and values, and in my opinion have brought me up to be a good person. They have taught me and showed me what the real world is all about. Though I'm not saying they have done everything for me because there are so many things I must experience for myself. One thing I can say is that I am very thankful for what my family has helped, and will continue to help me become.

According to the Webster's Dictionary, respectability means to show consideration or esteem for; to relate to. Courtesy or considerate treatment. I believe my family shows respect in many ways. By how the way we talk to each other and other people respectively. In such ways as being considerate and courteous, by being thankful for things people do for you, and by doing things to help other people. I show respect to my family by not talking back to them. I show respect to everyone by treating people the way I like to be treated. Doing that enables me to be respectful almost all the time because I know how important it is to me to be respected.

Responsibility is trustworthy, in charge; having authority; being answerable for one's actions or the actions of others according to Webster's Dictionary. Responsibility is my strongest quality. The members of my family are also very responsible people, this is most likely why I am too. Responsibility is a very important characteristic to me because it shows maturity, organization, dependability, and sometimes gains more trust from other people. I show responsibility by doing all of my schoolwork when it needs to be done, being at work on time and doing my job. I show responsibility towards my parents by cleaning up the house, picking up my little brother from football while my parents are at work. Also, by being home by curfew and acting responsibly while doing anything. Acting responsibly keeps me in control of my life, productive, trustworthy, and safe.

Webster's Dictionary defines dependability as capable of being depended upon; trustworthy. I think my mom is the most dependable person I know. I can count on her to do anything, such as helping me with schoolwork, and she is always willing to do it. I can depend on my mom to be there for me whenever I need her. I also believe that I am a very dependable person. I show dependence by being at work on time, and by doing what needs to be done. I am dependable because I am reliable, and trustworthy. I am very thankful for this quality; dependability makes me a better person because it is good to know that other people can depend on me.

Going along with the quote in the introduction of this paper, I have ripped off many principles and values from my family. I acknowledge them for helping me learn those principles and values by carrying them out. I am proud to be respectful, responsible, and dependable; the three qualities I have written about. These are only some of the qualities my family has given me. It is hard to even explain how much they have taught me, and how much they have given me. As a sign of my thankfulness, I use what I have learned to be a better person.

Critical Thinking and Decision Making

Critical Thinking and Decision Making

In the pursuit to gain the greatest understanding of any issue or topic a person must go through a process that allows them to think critically and then make informed decisions. Critical thinking involves asking questions and gaining knowledge to find the truth. This paper will examine the relationship between critical thinking and decision making. It will also show how this process is used at Allen plumbing and heating.

For the purposes of this paper Using critical thinking, you question established ideas, create new ideas, turn information into tools to solve problems and make closely " (Carol Carter, Joyce Bishop Sarah Lyman Kravitz, et al 18)

Decision making involves the process of critical thinking that leads you to an informed conclusions. The materials for this course, starting first with our text, Readings in Critical Thinking, describes critical thinking as an Awareness of a set of interrelated critical questions the Ability to ask and answer critical questions at appropriate times, and the Desire to actively use the critical questions(M. Neil Browne, Stuart M. Keeley, Morgan W. McCall Jr, et al, 18) Our lecture material says that Critical thinking is common sense, a process to identify problems and solving them using a rational and systematic approach based on reason ( Candice Shehorn, 00).

I think critical thinking leads to good decision making. This process involves several steps. First, you need to know what it is that you are trying to find, whether it be truth in an article, solutions to a problem, or the facts about a topic. Next, it is best to analyze or investigate the issue or situation. Once you have analyzed and investigated by asking questions to get answers you can make informed decisions that will better form

Critical Thinking

your thoughts or opinions on a subject. Critical thinking and decision making go hand-in-hand. A person can make decisions without thinking critically. For example, choosing what you want to eat off of a menu does not require someone to think critically. When we talk about more complex issues such as whether or not we should open our borders to immigrants, we need to be able to ask questions and get answers from many sources in order to make an informed decision. Obviously, most people are going to have preconceived notions or assumptions that will affect the way they look at any issue and the way they see new information.A good critical thinker will base their decisions upon reliable and truthful information. The benefits derived from being a critical thinker are endless. Youll increase your ability to perform thinking processes that help you reach any kind of school, career, or life goal( Carol Carter, et al,18) It allows you to come up with new ideas rather than just working off of others. It also allows you to be a valuable employee. Most importantly, it stimulates your ability to think creatively.

My job at Allen plumbing and heating has weekly meetings to evaluate how the company is doing. We also brainstorm and try to problems solve. These meetings have always been a great place to use my critical thinking skills. Problems are always brought up at these meetings. Typically, I will ask questions to identify the specifics of the problem and once I have established what is needed I will make suggestions to try to solve the problem. Our manager has always been open to my suggestions and has implemented several of my ideas. The fact that I am critical thinker has lead to my quick promotion through the ranks. This shows our critical thinking can benefit an individual at work.

Critical Thinking 4

In conclusion, it can be said the critical thinking is a key part in the process of learning. Critical thinking leads to a good decision making. By asking questions and investigating facts an individual or group can come up with informed answers to complex questions that will enrich their lives.

In The Crucible Arthur Miller presents several types of characters who are able to fit into three stereotypical categories, victims, villains and heroes. These characters and groups are easily identified through the actions of the play itself and the author notes included which provide information on certain characters giving insight into their life. Such strategies allow Miller to develop characters into the stereotypical roles.

Firstly, the entire community of Salem, Massachusetts is the victim of Abigail's mind games. She is the leader of the small group of girls who cause the trouble. She is instantly perceived as a "bad girl" to the reader and manipulates the local community and outsider's strong spiritual beliefs by accusing people of witchcraft which is heavily related to the Devil. Even though the audience knows she is a "Villain", other characters like Reverend John Hale and Judge Hathorne perceive her as a poor innocent child who has been influenced by "evil" people who conspire with the Devil. With Salem being a Theocracy at the time, the church ran the t wn and witchcraft was comparable to murder.

Abigail's main motives for causing trouble were to make the other girls and herself seem innocent when they had been 'naughty'. Another more personal motive was to win back her beloved Proctor, by having his current wife Elizabeth hung and finally having her revenge on all those who treated her badly in the past punished. She believes she has been treated badly in the past because as a small girl she saw her parents killed by native Indians and other women in the community talk about her as if she is a harlot.

A victim of Abigail's is John Proctor, who also fits into the role of hero. Proctor as the victim has to stand back and watch his poor wife arrested when Abigail has accused her of trying to murder her with a needle in a poppet. At this point of time in the play Proctor knows Abigail is trying to deceive the entire community of Salem. When Proctor pressures Mary Warren, a girl who was in on the charade and his family's live in servant, to telling the entire court of their lies, Abigail black mails her into re-joining the group using scare tactics.

John Proctor as the hero is an interesting character. Even though he has broken his wedding vowels and one of the Ten Commandments he is still seen as one of the "heroes" of the play. Proctor is considered a hero as he tried to save his loyal wife Elizabeth's life by confessing to the court of Abigails and his affair. When Elizabeth is questioned she denies the affair, and he is accused of sending his sprit upon Mary Warren, to hurt her and is arrested.

If the affair was to of become public knowledge, the Proctor family reputation would be considered mud and all respect the family held within the community would be lost. John Proctor in particular had a reputation within the community for being an honest and fair man.

Another reason why Proctor is considered a hero in The Crucible is because when many members of the community had been arrested with suspicion of witchcraft, the majority confessed to save their own lives. Yet John Proctor and Rebecca Nurse, who don't confess and proclaim their innocence, are hung. John Proctor makes a stance in the final Act of the play when Reverend Hale and Reverend Parris try and convince him to save himself by confessing to conspiring with the Devil. After confessing and signing the confession for court records, Danforth wants to nail Proctor's confession to the church doors for the whole community of Salem to see. He believes Proctor has great power within the community, and it will show the power of the court. Proctor refuses for the confession to been seen in public. As he believes 'it is my name! Because u cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have you my soul; leave me my name". He also does not want to bring shame upon his sons in the future. He tears the confession to shreds in front of Rebecca Nurse and they die together with dignity.

Giles Corey is also seen in two stereotypical roles, a villain and a hero. He tells Hale his wife reads books during the night keeping him from sleep and he is unable to pray. This is instantly thought to be witchcraft and she is arrested, yet there was no evidence to prove she was practising witchcraft at all. Corey was told by someone Thomas and Ann Putnam are asking their daughter to accuse certain people to acquire their land. He believes this to be solid evidence and wants it to be used in court. When asked to give the name, he is unable because he has promised not to mention the persons name to save their life. He is arrested and repeatedly tortured to confess the name. A form of torture used was placing weighty stones upon his chest. He consequently dies and his last words said are "more weight". For dying keeping a promise to a friend, he is seen as a hero.

There are many other characters that can be listed in the area of victims, heroes and villains. Yet the three characters talked about all represent one or two of the stereotypical characters who Miller presented with such influence within the play they are carved into the readers mind. There many more heroic and victim characters, yet the main villain is certainly Abigail.

After critically examining all the locations, poor performing stores where to close. In December of 001 8 stores in Canada would be closing over past 5 weeks 0 stores already closed. This was Country Styles strategy to get itself back into the coffee shop ball game. That means all stores not closed are assessed on its ability to generate consumer traffic, present an inviting and consistent Country Style atmosphere and meet sales objectives. Today Country Style continues to operate 150 strong locations, these stores will continue to contribute positively to our business while they intend to "revitalize Country Style". Country Style clams that by downsizing it can rebuild itself and be more profitable.

Country Style was formally a division of Maple Leaf Foods. Today Country Style is owned by CAI Capital Partners and Company. Country Style was founded in 16 in Toronto of Ontario. Afterwards a following of 50 franchises opened in Canada. Country Style is concentrated in Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta. Although Country still is concentrated in Canada there is also international outlets in Malta, Guatemala, Brazil the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand.

Country Style at the moment presently owes $15.7 million dollars to the Bank of Nova Scotia, and an additional $7. million dollars to unsecured parties such as landlords, franchisees and suppliers.

Competition since 15 had been brutal. This was the year when Tim Horton's was sold to Wendy's International Inc. (which is the rd biggest chain in the United States). In 15 Tim Horton's had a total of 100 outlets. At the end of 001 (after sold to Wendy's) Tim Horton's had a total 000 outlets and an additional 140 outlets in the States. Time Horton's benefited from steady and consistent advertisements (examples of such include Tim Horton's Camps, Sports teams, etc… Tim Horton's recently announced partnership with Imperial Oil. Adding an additional 00 Esso locations across the country serving up Tim Horton's donuts which are made fresh daily ensuring top quality. Tim Horton's company slogan is " always fresh".

The coffee shop market is saturated. Canada is home to more donut per capital then any other country. Another competition for Country Style is "Krispy Crème" Selling over 5 million donuts daily in the States. Recently they've entered the Canadian market starting off in Ontario. Country Style plans of defending territory by opening 0 new outlets in Ontario over the next years. To shareholders, owners, and operators this was not good news. Country Style's coffee is generally 50% of the sales through the store. The company slogan "Love at first Sip, freshly ground every time" this emphasizing on the coffee. Hoping that this will give it the edge it needs to rebuild it self.

I remember the days where I used to live in Espanola of Ontario. It was a small town and although there was a Tim Hortons down the street from Country Style we would always chose Country Style over the further stepped Tim Hortons. Country style should also work harder on giving that consumer convenience. Recently in Canada all Tim Hortons do not offer "direct payments (interact) and credit cards this is should give Country Style the edge it needs to re build bit self. Will once customer of many closed stores give the new country style a second chance?

The worst punishment I endured was in the summer of 185.I never had intentions of becoming a recalcitrant child; I had good intentions most of the time.Nevertheless, I always found myself in some type of trouble and had to face the wrath of my father.I was eight years old and in constant competition with my sisters and brother.Even though, they were much older than I, it just was not fair the things they got away with.I've waited impatiently for months to go to or summer house, even talked my dad into taking my best friend, Ebru, with us.This was going to be the best summer ever.My father warned us as soon as we arrived to our summer house; we were not to leave the premises without permission or without my siblings.Ebru and I were so excited. We planned our vacation for months, and there was just so much to do.The weekend came around and the beach poured with tourists. It was so crowded, there were people tanning underneath our balcony. My father left early in the morning to go to the town to buy some groceries, and about half hour later all my siblings disappeared.Ebru and I went out the balcony to find them, but they were no where in sight. We both agreed since there were no adults around, we couldn't get their permission. It would be fair that we went to the beach and joined everyone else, so we did.We even dragged the little plastic blow up boat my father bought for us to the ocean. The Mediterranean Sea was dead, the waves were very mild and we were having the best time of our lives. We even brought some refreshments and snacks along with us.The beach was getting away from us; we could barely see the tourist or my house anymore.Ebru and I were not scared until the waves picked up and flipped our boat over; we did not see it coming.Miraculously, my father had been looking for us and seen us from the balcony, but by the time he got to us it was too late, the boat already flipped over.Unlike us, he knew what was coming and brought the life guards with him.A day after we got rescued, Ebru and I were sent back to the city.My father dropped her off at her house and I went to my grandmother's.I was to stay there for the rest of the summer without any friends, television or fun.It was the most painful punishment of my childhood.

Courage, Ambition, Perseverance

In the play Macbeth, written by William Shakespeare, one can examine the characteristics of the three kings and decide which traits make the best leader. According to the play, these traits include courage, ambition, and perseverance. However, these traits are dependent upon the motivating force behind the individual. In Shakespeare's play, motivation by love of country molds the traits into a successful kingship whereas motivation by selfish or purely political desires leads to ruin.

Throughout the play, Macbeth shows two different types of courage, one motivated by loyalty to his country and the other based on his political desires.Courage and violence are interchangeable according to Alan Sinfield, "Violence is good, in this view, when it is in the service of the prevailing dispositions of power; when it disrupts them, it is evil." As the play begins, Macbeth shows unusual courage when he helps the king fight for his country. As the captain said, "For brave Macbethwell he deserves that nameDisdaining Fortune, with his brandished steel, Which smoked with bloody execution, Like valor's minion carved out his passage Till he faced the slave; Which nev'r shook hands, nor bade farewell to him, Till he unseamed him from the nave to th' chops, And fixed his head upon our battlements." With this violent description of Macbeth's loyalty to his country, one can see that he shows no mercy to those rebelling against the king. His courage and fortitude help win the war and make him the country's hero.Later in the play, Macbeth continues to exhibit courage, but his motivation has changed from duty to country to purely political and personal gain. This motivational change eventually leads to his downfall.

Ambition is another quality essential to being a good king. Both Duncan and Macbeth were ambitious men, but perhaps the most ambitious character in the play was Lady Macbeth.Whereas Duncan and, in the beginning, Macbeth, were motivated by love of country, Lady Macbeth's ambition was purely for personal gain.In her emotional monologue, "The raven himself is hoarse That croaks the fatal entrance of Duncan Under my battlements.Come, you spirits That tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, And fill me, from the crown to the toe, top-full Of direst cruelty! Make thick my blood…", Lady Macbeth indicated that she would do anything to seize the thrown from Duncan. She was able to manipulate Macbeth and turn his ambition from what was good for country to what was good for Macbeth and herself. This naked grab for power as shown by their plotting and murdering of King Duncan and positioning Macbeth to replace him as king, eventually led to the corruption of their characters and to the downfall of Macbeth's reign as king.According to A. C. Bradley in his critical essay on Macbeth, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are "two characters fired by one and the same passion of ambition; and to a considerable extent they are alike." Although ambition is necessary for one to become king, according to Shakespeare, the motivational force is just as important.

Perseverance is another valued quality in a leader. It is very important that a leader stick to what he believes in once a course of action has begun.Given the proper motivation, perseverance provides stability for the country and allows a trust to be formed between the king and his subjects. In the case of Macbeth, at first he was not convinced that killing the king was a good idea. However, when Lady Macbeth said, "What beast was 't then That made you break this enterprise to me? When you durst do it, the you were a man; And to be more than what you were, you would Be so much more the man.Nor time nor place did then adhere, and yet you would make both. They have made themselves, and that their fitness now Does unmake you," she shamed him into the assassination.Once the murder was done, however, Macbeth persevered to become king and maintain power. Perseverance causes progress for either good or bad.Again, the motivational force behind the perseverance is essential to whether the progress is good or bad.

Whether these three traits courage, ambition, and perseverance lead to a successful kingship or to tyranny and a personal downfall depends on the driving force behind them. Both types of kings, Duncan and Macbeth, are exemplified in Macbeth; however, the focus has been on Macbeth and his corruption.Courage, ambition, and perseverance were all qualities Macbeth possessed; however, his reasons for using them were flawed and corrupt and led to his downfall.

I would like to provide my child with an open environment so he/her can learn things on his/her own. I would like to give them a musical instrument or interest them in sport they may want to play. Two different people have raised me and they have taught me a lot.

I am now a musician that plays with a band. We have a dream to make it famous and to make music out there for people to relate to. And in this experience, imagine if you could provide your child with a soccer ball or a musical instrument when they are child. They may or may not be interested, but if they are, they will gain great talent in the sport or instrument. This will lead the child to a great future. Same thing goes with providing a book, making it an enjoyable hobby for child to read or play an instrument. It's done a lot for me and I'd like to pass it on to my children.

Script

It was a Friday night and Sabrina and Jonathan were waiting for the children to come home. It was almost midnight. Sabrina noted, "Jonathan, our children know when their curfew is." Their children were supposed to be home at 1000pm. Jonathan asked his wife, "They are two sixteen year-old girls, what could they possibly be doing out so late?" It was getting really late and the parents were getting tired. They were just about to go up to bed, when they heard keys scratching in the keyhole on the door. Sure enough it was their children. The door opened, "Do you know what time it is?!" the father yelled. "If you could possibly stay out this late, you might as well not come home" said the mother in an angry tone. "So get out, and don't come back," the father yelled, slamming the door behind them. The children didn't know what to do, so they went to their neighbour's house. Though they had done something wrong and disobeyed their parents, everyone makes mistakes. They were feeling a guilt they had never felt before. Their parents had done something wrong by kicking them out of the house and they weren't the only ones feeling bad. The neighbour's were happy to accept the girls that night and talk to them. They told the girl's that they must have had their parents extremely worried. "A call or something would have helped a lot. It's all about being responsible and keeping your parents informed of where you are," said one of the nieghbours. The girls stayed there for a while and then left. They decided to go home and try again. The girls were scared, but where else could they go? They didn't want to stay at their neighbours and all the wanted to was to go home. Their parents were unpredictable and they didn't know what choice to make. The memories of love between one's family can never leave their heart. They approached the front porch of their home and one of the girls put the key in to open the door. At that exact moment her father answered the door with sadness in his eyes and their mother sitting down by the door anxious to see if the girls were all right. Nothing but silence for about a minute, and nothing but love filled the room when the girls ran to their parents crying and holding them. And as the girls hugged their parents, they felt the greatest feeling. Having their parent's hug them back firmer than the girls did made all of them feel happier and secure. "I love you dad, I love you mom" were the words the girls said.

Assignment 1 Part 5

1.Create a chart that lists 5 responsibilities parents have for children in the age group of 0 5.

.Write a paragraph on how these responsibilities change as the child grows to 5 years of age.

.Write a paragraph on why parenting is a lifelong commitment in today's society.

1) 5 responsibilities parents have for children in the age group of 0 5

i)Feeding the childii)Keeping the child healthyiii)Washing the childiv)Clothing, toys, games (Childhood necessities)v)Spending time with the child

)Most of these responsibilities will remain the same but change in slight ways. Feeding your child from a bottle will change to eating from bowls, plates and drinking from cups. Keeping the child healthy will always remain the same because a child needs their vitamins and minerals. A parent must always provide all the necessities needed to keep a child's health maintained. Washing your little girl or boy will slightly change. They may want to become independent in doing this, but you must always be there to monitor them. Providing fun and games is a never-ending story because a child wants many things. From toys to candy, it will always be requested and sometimes parents should fulfill these needs. Spending time with your child is something you must always do. Being there when your child is upset or happy; to talk to or just to be a friend. Your children will grow to up to be more independent, but that must never push a parent away. Being there for your child whether they are a month old to a 5 year old will make the child feel loved. When they know what love is, they can give it back. Being there will bring trust and security.

)In today's society being a parent is a lifelong commitment because children grow up knowing how dear their parents are to them. They learn to have great respect for parents who have sheltered them and provided all the fundamental needs for them. Parents are there when a child gets into school, or when a child graduates from elementary school. They are there when you have won an award or when you get married. As long as someone's parents are alive, they will always be there for you; to give you advice for your children and to teach you something about their life experiences.

I.Biographical Information

Maya Angelou was born in 18 with the real name of Marguerite Johnson. She had a rough childhood, "from a broken family, raped at eight, unwed mother at sixteen" but still went on to act in an off-Broadway play, write books, and produce a PBS-TV show, as well as act in the acclaimed movie Roots.

II.General Summary

"Champion of the World" is a chapter from the book I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. The setting of the story takes place in a bar but it really doesn't matter. The story could have taken place anywhere and the point would still be made. What happens is the boxer Joe Louis is defending his title against a white man.Joe Louis wins the match and all the black people are happy. The fight was somewhat of a metaphor for the struggles between blacks and whites during that time period, and when the black man proved he was the strongest in the world, it basically proved that blacks were the strongest race on the planet.

III.Relationship to Today's Society

In today's society, there is still tension between blacks and whites. It may not be as prevalent as when Angelou wrote the selection, but it still exists below the surface as well as blatantly "in-your-face".Although times have changed, one thing still remains.A black man is still Champion of the World.

IV.Personal Evaluation

While reading the selection the reader feels as though they are actually in the bar with the people in the story. No matter what race one would feel pride for the blacks and their accomplishment that night.Angelou describes the scene with such detail that the whole event seems memorable.A small event can be retold with such pizzazz that it can be more than what it seems.

V.Terminology

African American Of African decent

Joe Louis Beat a white man and held his title as champion

Champion One that wins first place or prize in a competition

Racism The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.

Response to Creationism

The world that we live in is complex and frustrating.Life has always presented itself as a mysterious cloud that challenges our wits and our sense of existence. In the past and present, there are those who seek the truth behind the mystery of life and there are others who invent those truths for themselves. The art movements of the early 100's was a time for some to explain the enigma and have dominance, and also to led others with them to pursue the destiny that they create.Vicente Huidobro was one with creation in mind. His ideology was called Creationism. It was meant to transform the traditional concept of poetry into its own entity that would create a new world and a new way of thinking in defiance of what is obvious in nature. He claimed his way of thinking had supremacy over other art movements like Dada, Surrealism and Futurism because of its originality. In his manifesto he critiques principles and understanding of poetry. What huidobro fails to realize is that the some of the same flaws in understanding that he finds in Dada, Surrealism and Futurism can be found in Creationism.

What is Creationism.Creationism is centered around the idea that good poetry is not something that has to new and never attempted by anyone else before.

A poet's job is to create new images with using all the five senses by propelling oneself into a super conscious state that allows the poet to see nature with purity and clarity. To locate the special things in nature and to reinventing them with the power of the imagination is to become like god.Huidobro defines the created poem as " a poem in which each constituent part and everything together presents a new fact, independent of the external world and detached from all reality other that itself, because it takes its place in the world as a particular phenomenon separate and apart from other phenomena." (huidobro 4-45).The poet must become what is beyond belief and his/her key points in the artistic expression of a poem must be written in a universal language so that it can be understood in all languages. This raises poetry to a difficult standard.

Those worthy of the pursuing the occupation of a poet have to come from a family of poets, from the present or in the past.A person who has poetry in their blood is thought to have more of an aptitude for poetic writting.Huidobro does states that there are some whom have come close to creating poetry, like Tristan Tzara, but they fail to grasp the fundamental.

However, there are those in the art movements who would not agree with Huidobro, and say that he had no concrete motive for Creationism and that he is purposing change in poetry that is not necesassy to improve the quality of life. Tristan tzara has a different view of life and its causes and effects. He explains that Dada "was born of a moral need, of an implacable will to achieve a moral absolute, of a profound sentiment that man, at the center of all creations of the spirit, must affirm his primacy over notions emptied of all human substance, over dead objects and ill-gotten grains." Dada believes that logic is of no use and that to live in a world without logic is to know the pleasure of existence. A revolution against logic through art and literature is needed to unite with this dream.

Dadaist poets write poetry by taking a bunch of cut out words and arranging the words at random with no logical point.Huidobro speaks out against Dada poetry by implying that it's poetry lacks creativity and comprehension of what makes good poetry. The practice of grouping word to make a poem without effort is an insult to poetry. Tzara might say what kills creationist poetry is the misconception of poetry. What makes poetry beautiful is that it doesn't have to make sense because sagacity is in the mind of the individual, when poetry is conceived out the imagination. The way you go about making poetry is similar to the way a lady applies make up, tact is not the issue, what is transformed into beauty is what counts.77

Marketing Promotional Strategies and Analysis

For this task I have chosen to write about Ben and Jerrys and Haagen-Dazs ice cream. These are two rival brands at the top end of the market. I decided to write about ice cream because it is very popular and there is lots of information available about them. They also both have good marketing and promotional strategies.

I chose to write about Haagen-Dazs, as it is the best known ice cream. It is the number one super premium ice cream with 4 % of the market share. It is quite expensive as it is about £5 for a carton on the ice cream but it is very nice. It is made with natural ingredients and its flavours are Chocolate, Butter Pecan and Cherry Vanilla. It was first made over 40 years ago. Haagen-Dazs uses the finest and purest ingredients.

Ben and Jerrys is also at the top end of the market but it is a newer brand as it was first made in 178. It has % of the market share and is the number two brand. It costs a little bit less than Haagen-Dazs as well. The price is still quite expensive though as all the products used are bought from minority and disadvantaged workers.

It has a more fun image and has flavours such as Phish Food, Berry Nice and Cherry Garcia. It is aimed more towards young people than Haagen-Dazs is. It is aimed at young men and women in their teens, twenties and thirties with a high disposable income.

Although these products are both at the top end of the market and are luxury ice creams they have very different approaches to their marketing and promotional strategies.

Ben and Jerrys is marketed as a fun brand. It aims to try and attract younger people than Haagen-Dazs. This is shown by the names of its ice cream flavours and also by the design of the packet.

Haagen-Dazs has a more sophisticated image and it has a more grown-up carton. It is aimed more towards older people, for example, people in their late 0s, 0s and 40s.

Marketing Promotional Strategies

Marketing Mix and Promotion has four main aims. It is known as AIDA. It sums up the purpose of communication with customers through promotions.

A companies Unique Selling Point (USP) is what they use to make them different to other companies who are selling the same things as them.

Ben and Jerrys have got a laid back image but they also have a social awareness. When Ben and Jerry first started their company, they started the concept of giving back to the community as a whole. They make sure that the milk they use is bought from Vermont farmers and they buy the brownies they use in some of their ice creams from disadvantaged workers. They also give 7.5% of their profit away to help social and environmental causes. This is their Unique Selling Point.

Haagen-Dazs USP is that they are an ice cream aimed at adults that uses only the finest ingredients. They market themselves as the ultimate in luxury and extravagance.

There are lots of different types of media that can be used to advertise products. These are the mass media television, radio, cinema and the internet. There is also billboards, magazines, planes and product placement. Local media can also be used and this is notice boards, shop windows and public places.

These influence buyer behaviour by persuading them to buy the product they are advertising.

Haagen-Dazs has a lot of advertising. They advertise at cinemas and also on the television. They also have magazine and billboard advertisements. They advertise themselves as being a luxury ice cream and have started a new advertising campaign - Made for Movies. This is going along with a special offer at Blockbuster videos where they offer free video rentals.

When Haagen-Dazs first started in England they had a word of mouth campaign to make them seem very credible. They had marketed it as an upmarket product and at first it was only sold in upmarket shops. They ran advertisements in magazines like Vogue in order to attract the right sort of audience they wanted. Haagen-Dazs used AIDA to drip feed information in order to get peoples attention. Most people wouldn't be able to buy it at first though because they didn't shop at the right shops and it was expensive but after a while they started selling it at lots of shops. People bought Haagen-Dazs because they wanted to see what all the fuss was about and if it really was as good as other people said.

Ben and Jerrys also advertise their products but not as much as Haagen-Dazs. They do not have any television advertising at the moment; neither do they have any magazine adverts. They have a lot of promotional evens however, such as buses that go round universities and offer free tasting days.

Ben and Jerrys is often bringing out new flavours of ice cream and often has a "Flavour of the Month" They also stop making flavours that are not selling well. This is so customers do not get bored of the same thing. They advertise these new flavours in magazines and on billboards and people are keen to try what these new flavours taste like. They also advertise that they give a percentage of their profits to charity and the Ben and Jerry Foundation and this is used to gain customers.
