According to the Ethics Awareness Inventory CD the category that is most closely aligned in philosophy with the deontological theory of Immanuel Kant and John Rawls best describes me. (Ruggierio 17) The Ethics Awareness Ethics Awareness Inventory CD analysis revealed that I tend to base my ethical perspective on an individual's duty or obligation to do what is morally right.- principles that represent what rational persons ought to morally do. The study showed that I believe that ethical conduct appeals to the "conscience. " In judging whether a person's actions are ethical, I looked at the intent behind his/her actions, rather than focusing on the results. To be considered ethical, we choose how we act and what rules we are willing to follow. From my perspective, ethical principles must be (a) appropriate under any circumstance; (b) respectful of human dignity; and (c) committed to the accomplishment of some defined "end." The end does not justify the means. ( Ruggeri)

The Ethics Awareness Inventory CD made me more aware of my ethical style.According to this study, I believe that human beings have intrinsic value and that we have a right to individual respect. (Williams 00) Therefore, I cannot support social traditions and policies aimed at "the best interest of society as a whole" if any individual is denied the opportunities to which he/she is entitled as human being. My approach to ethics requires that it be within legal and humane limits, people should be allowed to make their own choices.Acting in response to impulse, instinct, or rules worked out by others for us to obey does not constitute ethical conduct on our part.I believe that fostering personal growth takes precedence over achieving efficiency through dehumanizing organizational and social structures.I encourage co-workers to return to school and encourage them to grow more. For this reason, I advocate policies intended to ensure equal respect and opportunities for all.Moral decisions must reflect the free choices of individuals if we expect to hold them personally responsible. I am guided by a desire to be in accord with established standards of right and wrong.

Many times I will face frustration when faced with ethical dilemmas.I was amazed how well the Ethics Awareness Inventory described me and how close they were to describing me to a tee in the analysis.Perhaps some of the following reasons may be why I face frustration during difficult decision making times. The test showed that what I determine to be the right choice may not appear to be the most beneficial choice, in the short-run, for the organization that I have agreed to support. The right choice does not necessarily maximize the good for the decision maker.

The Williams Institute for Ethics and Management felt that I believed in the "cost-benefit analysis was inappropriate for addressing issues with ethical considerations. However, this is the preferred decision-making tool for many organizations. An example of this is some things that I hold dear are not easily measured as being right and wrong, good and evil; and the value of human life. (Williams 00)

I believe that we have a moral duty or obligation to do what is right and this leaves little room for compromise when ethical principals are being violated.A good example of this would be when I was working in home health and I was told by my superiors to drop services for clients that truly needed help. The supervisors had never even spoken to the clients or made a personal in home assessment of the social situation, the patient's mental and physical conditions.Unfortunately, they were all out for the all "mighty dollar." Consequently, I lost respect for my boss and the organization that I was working for.I cannot work for anyone that I cannot respect.According to this CD defending my ethical perspective may result in economic hardship, a lost of a promotion or termination.I had worked for this hospital seven years when it was a non-profit organization. I saw the treatment of patients more humane.Unfortunately, when this hospital was sold to a profit making organization I had conflicts with the new management and choose to quit. What a mess! I knew that two could play their game.I divulged to the Texas Board of Nurses, that the hospital was requiring nurses to place confidential papers in an outside of the building unlocked mail box. This launched an investigation by the Texas Board of Nurses, against the hospital.I filed an EEOC claim against the hospital. At the time I filed the claim I knew I was not rich enough to stand up against the hospital.I filed on the matter of principal and knew that my boss would be exposed to those in higher positions.I did not care if bridges were burnt due to the fact I would not want to work for anyone with character as they were displaying.

My boss was on her knees begging me to come back to work.I stood alone in an office with her and two of her witnesses. I was there with my Lord. I proudly asked them each what they would do without a nursing license. They shook in their shoes.I told them in a strong confident voice that they were wrong to react in the way they were acting.I then told them it was a natural reaction that I had faced myself but it was so wrong to think so little of self.I said, "As nurses we have all been the nurse the teacher, the manager, the demonstrator and knowledgeable of medications and medical equipment.I know that if I lost my license tomorrow I could manage a Mc Donald's, if I had to. I could sell pharmaceuticals or medical equipment or write books and I could make a hell of a lot more money than I make as a staff nurse. I do not need a license to survive.Nobody can take away my knowledge."

I am proud to be nurse but I will never let anyone intimidate me.I will not be afraid to stand up for what I know is right or wrong, I have done it.Having more education has given me more power and has opened even more doors.I know I had angels watching out for me during this ethical and moral struggle.

We were very anxious and excited to ride the motorcycle, the weather was warm and windy, and the city was quiet and sleepy. We decided to do a short trip, so the following day we could show the motorcycle to everyone. But young souls are impatient; consequently, we ran out of the house riding the new present. After two hours of riding this wonderful and amazing technology device, a car was coming in front of us like if its driver was crazy or drank. We didn't have the opportunity to avoid it because the car was too fast and close, of course, we crashed into it. The car's driver ran away and finally the police arrived. They took us to the hospital; it is the last thing that I remember.

When I opened my eyes, everybody was running everywhere in a kind of hurry. Then, when the pain was all over my arm, I realized that I was in the hospital. The Doctor asked my name, my age, and the day of the year. I asked him too, "What happed to me.?" The Doctor said, "Your hand is severely injured, and your tendons need to be joined; therefore, we need to operate it right now." Suddenly, all my dreams of being a baseball player and having my normal life banished in a second, and a strange feeling of sadness invaded my whole body.

I was still awake when the Doctor and the nurses took me to the operating room; the place was completely white like welcoming you to other world. The pain was constant and I was waiting for a miracle. Then, the doctor asked me to relax and think about a good memory, so I just did what he said.I woke up and I was surrounded by nurses and, of course, by the Doctor. "The surgery took 8 hours," the Doctor said, "and another surgery might be needed." I didn't concerned about the another surgery fact, however, I was a little bit sad and curious. The next minutes I waited for my parent's arrival. I didn't think about my hand and bad news. When they arrived, I felt blessed for their presence and in that moment, I realized how lucky I was being surrounded by family and friends, and even more, seeing Michael holding my mother's hand knowing he was al l right.

On the other hand, the Doctor and my parents were talking about my situation. The Doctor explained to my father that the damage of my hand was serious. He explained that every operation has a risk and, therefore, the possibility of an amputation was open.Of course, this fact was connected to my healing response and the reaction to the medicines.

The day after the surgery, my friends and family came over to visit me. We were talking about everything and about the accident. My parents spoke with the Doctor once again. The Doctor had a splendid smile in his face, in that moment I knew everything was okay.He gave details about the surgery and the recuperation. He said that I had good defenses and that my hand was out of danger. My dreams and my goals were born again. I was different now. I was more responsible and conscious about the importance of being alive; the importance of give value to our body, our senses, and our whole being that suffers and needs to be in peace. At the

Communication is a great tool in life that everyone is this world can use. Communication is the exchange of thoughts, messages, or information, as by speech, signals, writing, or behavior. It is a necessity in life itself, and without it there would probably be nothing in this world. People would just think of themselves, eating, and surviving. But with communication, more than one person can help in order to achieve a greater goal. Active listening, nonjudgmental statements, paraphrasing, setting examples and visuals are only a small portion of all the elements of effective communication. These elements chosen are demonstrated in leadership and peer support roles such as tutoring, coaching and teaching.

Looking thoroughly into tutoring, the main goal is to privately assist someone with his or her needs. An example would be a student that needs help on math homework. This example is used because it is what tutors usually major in; not on just math, but on homework itself. Active listening is an important role here since one will have to listen in order to find a solution to the problem. Paraphrasing could really be helping in these situations because sometimes a student cannot comprehend an instruction the way it is first given them. In mathematical situations, jellybeans could help a young child with his or her counting, where in a situation with a young adult, practicing counting in their minds can help their mathematical and logical skills increase. Setting examples and using visuals are straightforward in seeing how they can help in tutoring. As for nonjudgmental statements, no one should ever judge anyone but themselves. This applies to all roles involved with leadership and peer support.

Coaching is another form of communication, which is mostly involved with instruction. This type of communication focuses on instructing different types of performance, from singing to being an athlete. Its hands-on work and less logical work. Coaching a hockey team requires some listening, but more setting examples and visuals to make a play. But just like a Canadian army would make their soldiers very patriotic, so do hockey coaches. They play to win, to be the best out there.

One would feel that teaching is a combination of both tutoring and coaching. In knowing this, all the elements apply. Teachers that listen to their students will usually obtain much respect from them. Though the teachers are of higher authority, one would feel that students would rather want to be equal with everyone in a classroom. Judgmental statements should be avoided. Paraphrasing is a very important tool in teaching because there will always be some students that did not understand what the teacher is trying to say. This is important especially when dealing with children who are learning disabled. Sometimes the smallest things can help someone so much.

In conclusion, one would realize that every element in effective communication helps. Whether it's a small or large element, it still makes a difference. That one difference could very well change someone's life. It is important to apply the elements to every type of leadership and peer support roles.

To Kill A Mockingbird Essay

The story To Kill A Mocking Bird has a plot set around the 150's in a small southern town. In this certain era people did not have any declared respect for African Americans. This race was highly frowned upon and shunned by society.

The vulgar language used toward and referring to African Americans could be reason enough to make this specific book banned from many schools. At the time the book was set colored people had a very low rank in society and there was no thought of equality among the races. One word in this book showed very little respect toward black people and it is very understandable that they would be objective toward it; this word is Niger. It was obviously a bad thing to be associated with an African American person. When Cecile Jacobs called Atticus a "Niger" lover Scout took it as an insult; and this was a rightful feeling at that time. (chapter nine, pg.75) Although it is a very racist word it would be incorrect and very anachronist to use it in other context making the whites seem less patronizing. This is the way it was in that time frame and it would be wrong to depict it any other way. This specific group might be mad because they don't think that it is imperative to have this word spoken so easily even considering the circumstances. It is an outrageous insult whether present or past to use the word "Niger" while referring to a black person. It is a time of freedom and maybe these people believe that this is interfering with their strong attempt to ban those memories. It seems as though the book is making this race out to be inept and vacuous even this thought may be completely spurious. Tom Robinson was portrayed to be useless and the only job he could effectively do was fix simple objects. (chapter 1, pg.1)

At this time racist is still felt but not as much as before. The NAACP simply felt that the current youth may not understand the context of the book. Some of the junior high school children might not have the integrity that the teachers have entrusted in them. Various children were not exposed to the idea of colored people being referred to as "Niger" and this might interfere with their lives. This racial slur is rightfully expelled in the common language. Young people might not understand that this book took place before the African American rights took affect. Many people suffered to instill equality. Some of the racial context in this book may have to strong of a meaning for young people to understand. In one case where Tom Robinson is wrongfully accused of rape even though there is evidence to support his innocence. (chapter 1, pg. 07-08) After the trial Tom is shot 17 times while trying to escape from prison. This brought no justice to him nor any one else and this action was unnecessary. (chapter 4, pg. 5) This may trigger in a person's mind that it is alright that if an action is made the only consequence is death. The main thing is the racial judgment toward African Americans and how they use this specific context.

Some children may not understand the circumstances of the past but I also think that this decision of decided whether or not to banned this book should be decided by the teachers themselves. They know the student's limits and know the basic background of their families. To Kill A Mockingbird is a controversial book but the main idea of it is racial discrimination. This subject itself helps a person whether to agree with its statements or just to rule them as false. I think that the soul trust of its integrity should lie in the hands of the mentor. They may know the meaning of the book and will most likely explain the time that the book took place and that it was very different then. If they point out how the majority of racial discrimination has changed because of smart devoted people the students are bound to better understand the true meaning of To Kill A Mockingbird. The decision whether to banned this book or not should be up to the teacher. This book should not be banned unless the teacher believes that the students are not ready mentally. I believe it is their decision alone to decide whether it is appropriate or not. This book also contains many inappropriate verses. One example is when Tom Robinson was in court testifying for himself and stated that Robert Ewell harassed his daughter by saying "He says Goddamn whore I'll kill ya!". This could possibly offend someone while reading this and someone not acquainted with this word could possibly seek a definition. The parents might disapprove of their son/daughter knowing this word and having them possibly add it to their normal vocabulary.

This book should not be considered "trashy" because this is the way her life was then and it would be lying if she used different words to describe the occurrences.I disagree with that statement because if this book was never published people would not know the circumstances of the past. She told it like it happened and anything else would be artificial. There is nothing that proves that her book is fictitious only that she may have over exaggerated a bit. Her book simply explained the times and told her experiences. There is nothing trashy about a story that tells about her life prior to the African American stand for independence. This is the way it was and if anything it is more or less informative rather than trashy. Her ideas in the book were based on herself being very young in a racist southern town. This is book is critical for history in the class as well as a story to identify the segregation between the races.Drinking alcohol is also referred to quite frequently because of Dolphis Raymond who was known as the town drunk. It may have been considered trashy because of the story line making the majority of the town against colored people and this book also makes the Southern people seem racist and ignorant. Blacks are portrayed as incompetent fools that have no other purpose than to fulfill simple tasks that the white man find to be insignificant. The whites are depicted as conceited pigs that find any other person of another race "trash" .The Blacks are also portrayed as an unimportant race that are highly frowned upon by society. These occurrences may have been over exaggerated but in a bad way. Each race is looked upon horribly and depicted as bad as they can be.This so called "real" society is an example of the ultimate racist society most likely not experienced by "Scout".

This book may be over exaggerated but it is still a relevant book that describes what things could and may have been like in the 150's.

States are going to form, whether purposefully or coincidentally. For this reason, certain

rules have to be enacted for the well-being of the state. The main way to institutionalize

rules is through government and in the form of laws. Plato's The Republic is not an

explication of laws of the people. It is a separation of power amongst three

classes--Rulers, Auxiliaries, Commoners--that makes the most of each person's natural

abilities and strives for the good of the community. The point is to create a harmonious

unity amongst the three classes which will lead to the greater good of the community

and, consequently, each individual.

The three classes are a product of different aptitude levels for certain tasks amid

various individuals. Plato assigns different political roles to different members of each

class. It appears that the only classes that are allowed to participate in government are

the Auxiliaries and, of course, the Philosopher Rulers. The lower class does not partake

in politics because they are not mentally able. In other words, they do not understand

the concept of the forms. Thus, it is better to allow the Philosophers, who do have this

knowledge, to lead them. Providing food and abode for the Guardians is the only

governmental responsibility the lower class has. The Auxiliaries are in charge of the

military, police, and executive duties. Ruling and making laws is reserved for the

Philosopher Rulers whose actions are all intended for the good of the state. To ensure

that public good continues to be foremost on each Ruler's agenda, the Rulers live in

community housing, hold wives/children in common, and do not own private

property. The separation of classes is understood by everybody Self-interest, which

could be a negative factor in the scheme of things, is eliminated through a very moral

oriented education system. All these provisions are generated to maintain unity of the

state. The most extravagant precaution that Plato takes is the Foundation Myth of the

metals. By making the people believe, through a myth, that the distinction of each class

is biological as well as moral, Plato reassures that there won't be any disruption in the

harmony of the state.

Whereas Plato's The Republic is a text whose goal is to define Justice and in

doing so uses the polis, Aristotle's The Politics' sole function is to define itself--define

politics. Aristotle begins his text by answering the question: "Why does the state exist?"

His answer is that the state is the culmination of natural associations that start with the

joining of man and woman ("pair"), which have a family and form a "household";

households unite and form villages; villages unite and form the state. This natural order

of events is what is best because it provides for the needs of all the individuals.

Aristotle, like Plato, believes that a person is not self-reliant. This lack of sufficiency is

the catalyst in the escalating order of unions among people.

In The Politics, it appears that Aristotle is not very set on breaking down society.

His argument says that there are different classes in society, but they are naturally

defined. For example, he devotes a lot of time to an explanation of the "naturalness" of

slaves and their role in society. Aristotle is also very sexist and explicitly states so. His

view is that women are inferior to men in all senses. Perhaps the most pertaining to our

discussion is the citizen, whose role is purely political. Both Plato and Aristotle seem to

agree that some people are not capable of practicing an active role in political life.

Plato's reason is that the lower class is not mentally adept for the intricacies of higher

knowledge on the good. Aristotle seems to base his opinion on a more political issue.

He believes that only those that fully participate in their government should be

considered citizens of the state. For this reason, he excludes workers as citizens because

they would not have the required time to openly participate in politicking.

The Aristotelian polis, as opposed to Plato's, is a city with a large middle class

which promotes stability and balances the conflicting claims of the poor and the rich.

Aristotle combines elements of democracy with elements of aristocracy, again to balance

opposing claims. Because he is aware that human interest is an inextricable entity, the

distribution of scarce and valuable goods is in proportion to contribution to the good of

the polis. This system provides for the self interested who believe that those who work

harder should receive more. Another point is that the citizens rule and are ruled in turn,

insofar as the mixed social system allows. This is permissible because of the strong

involvement of the citizens in government; it is what one would call a "true democracy."

Overall, a spirit of moderation prevails.

The roles of women, and men as well, have changed greatly. Women hold powerful positions in government and politics, and business. Other women have careers and families, where each parent does an equal chare of the parental duties. Still other women work full time while their husbands take care of the home and family. Some people still think that the old stereotype of a womans place being in the home is still true, but everyday more and more people are accepting the fact that a woman can do just about anything.

There are so many powerful women in the world today than compared to the sixties. For example, there are now two female Supreme Court Justices, Sandra Day O'Connor who was nominated into office in 181 and Ruth Bader Ginsburg who was nominated in to office in 1. Not only that, there are seven female governors in the United States, Janet Napolitano gov. of Arizona, Ruth Ann Minner gov. of Delaware, Linda Lingle gov. of Hawaii, Kathleen Sebelius gov. of Kansas, Jennifer Granholm gov. of Michigan, Lori Hauser Holden gov. of Missouri, and Judy Martz gov. of Montana. There are also more women involved in science like Mae C. Jemison, a former astronaut. Another major step for women was forged by Robin Roberts who was one of the first female sports broadcasters on television. However, with every step forward there are people trying to hold women back.

The Catholic Church is a very strict institution; things have been done that some way for thousands of years. Very little has changed in the way of the church's perception of women. While most people in the Catholic Church recognize women as being equal with men, not much as changed to show this. Men still dominate the church; they hold all of the higher and more powerful positions. There are still no fully recognized female Catholic priests. However, the church was recently rock by an outrageous molestation scandal. So, maybe now the Catholic Church will reexamine the way they have been doing things. And hopefully things will turn out for the better for everyone.

The women's movement has changed every woman's life forever. I only hope that the movement will continue, because there are plenty of things that need to be changed for the better, not only for women but also for everyone.

Introduction

In an era of intense competition, those companies with the best partner communication win in the marketplace. The Internet enables companies to communicate better with employees, customers, suppliers, and distributors. Companies have discovered the benefits of the Internet, and now are expanding its use in two directions---Intranet and Extranet.

Extranet is viewed as the "third wave" of the Internet revolution. First there was the original Internet, and then companies began creating intranets for transferring information within organizations. Finally companies extended the Intranet to the Extranet. Each step was based on the previous one.

An Extranet is a private network that uses the Internet protocol and the public telecommunication system to securely share part of a business's information or operations with suppliers, vendors, partners, customers, or other businesses. An Extranet can be viewed either as a part of a company's Intranet that is made accessible to other companies or as a collaborative Internet connection with other companies. Unlike the Internet, an Extranet is not wide open. Unlike an Intranet, it is not restricted to internal use. An Extranet allows companies to increase their competitiveness by providing service opportunities, decreasing data processing times, reducing costs, and allowing companies to work better with partners and suppliers.

How the Extranet can benefit the organization

Communications

Quick communication with customers and partners is an advantage in the market. Within the organization, there are no barriers to communication and knowledge sharing at all levels; outside of an organization, the channel of coordination with suppliers is improved; they are even allowed to enter the internal system to view the inventory and replenish the products without ordering. Also companies can monitor their suppliers' performance. Having feedback from customers may speed product development and make it possible to provide better customer service, which can increase customer satisfaction and loyalty. The Extranet makes their relationship closer and stabler.

Cost

Since an Extranet uses the Internet's open standard, there are no compatibility problems. An organization does not need to spend extra money to buy the unified equipment to run the system. There are still some standard tools and software, so there is no need for training.

All information is shared on the extranet, so information exchange can be completed throughout the net. This reduces the cost of access to information and distribution and time spent traveling, meeting, and telephoning. According to a survey, 40% of worker time is spent in processing documents and 40% of worker time is spent communicating. So an extranet is a good tool for saving time and money.

Effectiveness

An Extranet makes the company more effective. The user can instantly view the information that is created on the Extranet, what eliminates misunderstanding throughout the organization and improves the speed of information exchange.

Efficiency

The Extranet members can be on line at their most convenient time. They can find what they need when they need it. All of them are able to collaborate without time or geographic constraints. When developing a new product, collaborative Extranet enables manufacturers, suppliers and customers to connect, which gives engineers direct access to customers' and suppliers' ideas for improving products. A quick response is important to shorten product cycles dramatically and increase productivity.

Applications areas

Extranets are being used to achieve cost reduction, effectiveness, and efficiency in all parts of the business, from suppliers to operations, marketing and customer service.

Government

Electronic filing of tax documents is an example of Extranet usage in the government. The requirement for this kind of filing will continue to increase over the coming years, and the Extranet will help cut distribution costs and minimize data entry errors.

Transportation

More and more transportation companies are now allowing their customers to tap into the availability schedule for their truck, rail and air fleets, and even place an order directly, such as e-tickets. After customers select a flight schedule on site, they just need to fill in their credit card numbers and click "confirm", and then the money will be transferred automatically from their accounts to the airplane companies' accounts. A letter of confirmation will be sent to their e-mail boxes. Only showing the copy of the letter and ID card can they board a plane. This technology makes people's lives more convenient and efficient.

Pharmacy

Many pharmaceutical firms are gathering test data from different sources via an Extranet. This is especially useful for drug testing that is conducted by researchers worldwide.

Service

The use of an Extranet provides access to corporate knowledge bases and account information to improve customer service. For example, financial services provide account status, bills paying, investments tracking, and transfer of funds to their customers.

Manufacture

The most popular applications of an Extranet in manufacturing include order status, warranty program management, and on-line order placement by customers.

Telephone

Many telephone companies are now providing account status and each call status to their customers. For example, AT&T online billing permits customers to view, sort and print out their monthly statements anytime. Another website named Bigzoo provides worldwide telephone service. After signing up and charging the PIN number given by the site, customers can use it like a telephone card. The status of each call can be viewed and the PIN number can be recharged anytime. The rate is cheaper than any other companies, and there is no purchase tax. It attracts a large number of customers to enjoy its services.

Examples of applications

As more advanced technology for Extranets becomes available, many business firms are implementing Extranets successfully; here are some examples of firms that have seen the benefit of Extranets.

The big three automakers

The big three automakers, Chrysler Corp., General Motors Corp., and Ford Motor Co., build a collaborative Extranet that links them to their suppliers through designated ISPs called the Automotive Network eXchange (ANX). Its estimated to drive billions of dollars in costs from the supply chain. ANX replaces 50 to 100 direct dial connections to the automakers, reducing telecommunication costs up to 70%, but the real payoffs are in speeding and easing communications between suppliers and manufacturers. ANX is used to electronically route product shipment schedules, order information, CAD files for product designs, purchase orders, and other financial information.

ANX is designed to be a single, secure network for electronic commerce and data transfer, allowing the Big Three to collaborate in real time with their suppliers over secured areas of the Internet. It also enables engineers to run analysis software, solid modeling CAD packages or even high-speed prototyping with the fastest communications links. The network not only provides CAD/CAM but also provides applications such as advanced videoconferencing and three-dimensional virtual reality design sessions. The new network is used to cut the cost of doing business, but more importantly, it speeds new automotive designs. Automakers have struggled with a five-year design cycle, but they have knocked that down to less than three years.

Federal Express

The most famous example of an Extranet is Federal Express Tracking System (www.fedex.com). Through the Web, customers can access FedExs public site, enter their tracking number and locate any package still in the system. In a single session customers enter all the information needed to prepare a shipper form, obtain a tracking number, print the form, and schedule a pick up.

How much does an Extranet cost?

The development cost of an Extranet is proportional to the cost of web pages, because Extranet is built based on the Internet.

The sites can be divided into three groups according to functions

The first one is called a promotional site that focuses on a particular product, service or company. Its cost is $00,000-$400,000 per year, of which 17-0% pays for hardware and software, 5-10% for marketing, and the balance for content and servicing.

The second one is called a knowledge-based site that publishes information that is updated constantly. Its cost is $1 to $1.5 million annually, of which 0-% is spent on hardware and software, 0-5% on marketing, and 55-60% on content and servicing.

The third one is called a transaction-based site that lets surfer shop, receive customer services or process orders. Its cost is $ million per year, of which 0-4% is spent on hardware and software, 0-5% on marketing, and 45-50% on content and servicing.

Issues to overcome

Security

A disadvantage when talking about an Extranet is the issue of security. A system that runs over the Internet is more vulnerable than a proprietary one. Also the type of information transmitted over extranet, financial data, development of new products, makes the network an appealing target for hackers.

Human factor

The technology is different from what people are used to, and it requires a new set of skills to understand and master the technology. For the salespersons who work on commission, the implementation of an Extranet can cause dissatisfaction, because customers complete their purchase directly and revenues become more widely distributed within the company. So changes should be carried out carefully because of the cultural problems and resistance.

Cost

From the preceding part discussing the costs of Extranets, the idea that the costs of establishing an Extranet is expansive can be obtained. An Extranet is constructed on the base of the Internet and the Intranet. It evolves large areas to support, so a huge amount of money is needed.

Conclusion

The Extranet likes a bridge connecting the Internet and the Intranet together. With integrated information sharing through this channel, costs spent on information exchange can be reduced, service can be improved, and value provided to the customer can be enhanced.

Now we can see more and more organizations utilize an Extranet in their daily information exchange. Successful Extranets are designed to produce benefits for the organizations. More effective communications enable operations to take the advantage in the market, and less time and money spent on an Extranet makes organizations do business more efficiently.

Although security is the biggest drawback of an Extranet, with the high-speed improvement of web security, the extranet will be a secure network in the future. Customers and corporations can keep in virtual contact with each other constantly.

Essay on Paired Texts

'The Great Gatsby' and 'Bernice Bobs Her Hair and Other Short Stories'

To what extent did women treat men in similar ways in two of the texts you studied this year?

The central, female characters in F. Scott Fitzgerald's texts The Great Gatsby and Bernice Bobs Her Hair and Other Short Stories are far from stereotypical. The women are not timid housewives, but strong-minded, manipulative women who love being in control. The texts' female characters treat men as objects, which can be manipulated and controlled through the behaviour, speech or tone of a woman. These women have learnt that if they can create the right persona, the male population will be 'eating out of their hand'. The women regard men as 'prizes' that can easily be won all it takes is strategy and practice, and the more prizes they win the better, regardless of who gets hurt in the process.

Two of the women in the texts use a behavioural technique to help them obtain the affections of men. Both Daisy Buchanan (The Great Gatsby) and Judy Jones (Winter Dreams) use 'structured' smiles to gain influence over men; Dexter describes Judy's smile as "less a smile than an invitation to a kiss." Both women have learned of the power that lies in their deceitful and 'fake' smiles and use this 'talent' to obtain the adoration of men.

Many of the texts' female protagonists structure personas to influence men. This involves 'constructing' their speech to increase their attraction and gain affection. In The Great Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan uses a "thrilling" tone of speech that suggests to men "she had done gay, exciting things…and that there were gay, exciting things hovering in the next hour." Daisy's tone influences men to give their affection, even men who are aware of her 'false' personality when Daisy first appears in the text, she greets her cousin, Nick, like there is "…no one in the world she so wanted to see." In Bernice Bobs Her Hair, the extent to which speech can influence affection is clearly exemplified. In the text, the "fairylike" Marjorie Harvey instructs her "sorta dopeless" cousin, Bernice, on the art of 'manipulative conversation'. Bernice puts her cousin's techniques to the test at a social dance; she poses the question, to several men, off whether or not she should 'bob' her hair Bernice ultimately transforms overnight from a social failure to a 'vibrant' success. In Winter Dreams, the "arrestingly beautiful" Judy Jones uses contrived conversation to win the adoration of many men, including Dexter Green. During Judy and Dexter's first 'date', Judy whispers to Dexter, "I don't know what's the matter with me. Last night I thought I was in love with a man and tonight I think I'm in love with you…" The women use 'scripted speech as a 'manipulation tactic' to gain attraction, attention and devotion, in their treatment of men. By constructing their speech, they make themselves appear genuine, trustworthy and available- even though this is usually far from the case. Their speech is a refined art learnt and mastered to ultimately win them power.

The 'treat 'em mean keep 'em keen' tactic is used on men, by several of the texts' female characters. In Bernice Bobs Her Hair, Marjorie is "worshipped" by her young neighbour and Yale student, Warren McIntyre. Despite Warren's deep affection for Marjorie, she refuses to return feelings of the same depth; Marjorie informs Warren that "she did not love him," after she conducted a test to see whether she "…forgot him and had affairs with other boys," when she was away from him. By informing Warren of how 'desired' she is, Warren's feelings towards her are heightened and Marjorie's control over Warren increases. Daisy Buchanan and Judy Jones use similar techniques to draw men in. All three women seem discontent with the affections of a single man and by playing on the 'heard instinct' of men, the women gain the extent of male adoration they seek. The women tend to treat men as a 'whole' rather than as individuals and play control games with both their minds and hearts. They create an aura of intense desirability around themselves, thus attracting many men and giving the women a sense of power. The women manipulate men into believing they 'have' the woman, when she has no real intention of ever returning his degree of affection.

In the two texts Fitzgerald presents women, in married relationships, as having a degree of power over their husbands. In The Great Gatsby, the "hulking" Tom Buchanan is portrayed as being the more physically powerful half of his marriage with Daisy. However, it is evident that Daisy does have control in the relationship Daisy announces that they will be going to Gatsby's party and later proposes a trip into town; both suggestions are agreed to by Tom without question, despite Tom's reservations about both 'outings'. In The Baby Party, John Markey, accepts his wife's order for him to attend a baby party after he finishes work, without question. In The Great Gatsby, Myrtle Wilson demonstrates a more obvious degree of control over her husband. She orders him around in her "husky" voice and gains increased control over her timid husband every time he responds to her orders. The married women in both texts deceive their husbands by playing on the affections of other men; In The Great Gatsby, Daisy flirts with Nick by stating "Are you in love with me." Even though the women may not appear to have physical control in the relationship, they gain control over men by using deceitful, mastered techniques.

The central women in Fitzgerald's texts treat men as easily manipulated objects. They apply their mastered techniques to ultimately win the affection of any man they desire. The women treat men's emotions as prizes that can be easily won, controlled and manipulated through strategy, deceit and 'effortless' charm.

Piggy is represented throughout the novel The Lord of the Flies as an annoying intellectual boy who possesses the only order and reason left among the boys remaining on the island.Just as Piggy's name is literally symbolic for his connection with pigs, which the other boys hunt and kill, Piggy's disabilities such as his obesity, asthma and near blindness creates a barrier between Piggy and the other boys. The other boys view Piggy as an outlet to harass and torture to satisfy their primal needs.Piggy's disabilities make him an easy target to the boy's aggression.Unlike Ralph who is admired among the boys Piggy is looked down upon as a nuisance and troublesome character.

When the boys first realize they are alone on the island, Ralph blows the recently discovered conch to rally the scattered boys. When Jack and the choir boys find Ralph and the other boys, Jack's first reaction is to put Piggy down and exploit Piggy's size. This is illustrated in the following passage when Jack says, "You're talking too much," said Jack Merridew."Shut up, Fatty." "He's not Fatty," cried Ralph, "his real names Piggy!" "Piggy!" "Piggy!" (Golding 1).Jack is naturally cruel and malicious and bothers Piggy for no specific reason except his large figure and glasses. These articles separate the "normal" boys who don't wear glasses and are not fat from Piggy.Piggy is obviously reserved and restrained which only worsens the situation after the boys believe they can get away with harassing Piggy without much complaint.

Jack is the focus of the group that usually bothers Piggy. While being the leader of the hunters, the hunters only encourage Jack to inflict more mental and physical harm upon Piggy when they laugh at Jacks misdeeds. From the moment Jack laid eyes on Piggy, Jack viewed Piggy as a weakling and an individual to take advantage of.This idea is most likely associated with the various complaints Piggy made regarding his asthma, the importance of his glasses and his failure to hunt and work. This is clearly depicted in the following passage when Jack strikes Piggy after his hunters agree with Piggy's criticism of Jack's irresponsibility of maintaining the fire.Ashamed and enraged Jack, "Took a step, and able at last to hit someone, stuck his fist into Piggy's stomach.Piggy sat down with a grunt." "You would, would you? Fatty!" (71).This without a doubt is proof of Piggy's vulnerability and susceptibility to anger from any of the boys.Jack merely wants to vent his anger with a punch and who better but Piggy who is just there.Piggy's is an ideal target because he did not take any part in the hunting of the boar which puts Piggy negatively into the eyes of the other boys. They view Piggy as lazy although Piggy would give up anything for the chance to be able to run and hunt without the restrictions of his obesity and asthma.

Throughout the novel, William Golding perpetuates the idea of Piggy's helplessness through various acts of physical and verbal violence inflicted upon him by the other boys.He is an ideal target due to his weaknesses in sight, stature and breathing ability and loses the ultimate battle when killed by the malevolent Roger. Piggy represents the necessity of civilization and order on the island and the boys represent the power of corruption and evil which so easily overwhelm Piggy.

Piggy is always the focus of the boy's aggression on the island throughout the Lord of the Flies. He is picked on because of various physical and mental characteristics that he possesses. These characteristics include his weight, need for glasses and most prominent his asthma.Piggy's name is as symbolic as his asthma, his name having the obvious connection with pigs which the boy's hunt and kill.Like his name, Piggy's asthma weakens Piggy in the eyes of the boy's.Most of the boys do not have asthma and this separates him from the other boys.Piggy is viewed as an outsider among the people he most admires.Throughout Lord of the Files, Piggy's asthma represents his faults and weaknesses which the boys use to abuse Piggy physically and emotionally.

asthma is also symbolic of Piggys Piggy has an obvious meaning, and the name connects the boy

to the pigs which the other boys hunt and kill.

Piggy is a little like Simon in that he is the butt of cruelty and

laughter. He has several disabilities-his asthma, his obesity,

and his near blindness-and they set him apart from the other

boys. But his illnesses have isolated him and given him time

to think about life. Like Simon, Piggy is wiser than most of

the boys; however, he is able to speak up at meetings more

than Simon can, and he becomes Ralphs respected friend.

As advisor to Ralph, Piggy understands more than Ralph does.

It is Piggy who knows that blowing the conch will call the

boys together. Piggy tries to help Ralph keep order. He also

tries to think what adults would do if they were in the same

situation. Piggy represents civilization and its hold on man.

Piggy is a thinking person, one who has a strong belief in

scientific explanations and rational solutions to problems.

However, Piggy has his blind spots. He wants to believe that

once youre an adult, you no longer fear the dark, and that life

can always be explained. He also wants little to do with

understanding evil. After Simon has been murdered, Piggy

tries to deny and rationalize the killing.

Piggys presence on the island is a constant reminder of how

thinking people live. In the jungle he becomes weakened,

civilization recedes, and with his death the law of the jungle

prevails. Piggy is Goldings argument for the need of

civilization and his case against mans return to a more

innocent state in nature.

Piggy - Ralphs lieutenant. A whiny, intellectual boy, Piggys inventiveness frequently leads to innovation, such as the makeshift sundial, which the boys use to tell time. Piggy represents the scientific, rational side of civilization.

"0" WAS FOR YOU, BUT "0" IS FOR ME AND I'M STRESSFREE!

"Be careful who you choose to have as friends because sometimes bad habits can rub off," is what mommy preached to me when I was younger and now I see it to be true.I just lost a long-term friendship. As I look back I'm kind of happy that happened. Some say a good friendship is hard to come across, but bad ones aren't missed.

When I was younger, my so-called best friend and I had a fight but; somewhere later in life, we were able to look past the fight and became good friends, and so I thought.I'm really not the type of person who does well with friendships.I consider myself a loner, but I'm not lonely.I enjoy my mother being my friend.I no longer see my friends who I grew up with as friend, I consider them as associates! I guess I got older and started seeing the realness in people because that's exactly what happened with Menyatta and I.

Yeah, I will admit that the argument the friendship ended over was petty, but it was things building and building and I just got fed up.She was the type of friend that would try to be spiteful in a sneaky way, but now I see her for who and what she is.Everyone's looking at me like I'm the one who did something wrong, when she's the one who put me out of her car and I was supposed to be her best friend.

It was getting to the point where my whole family didn't like Menyatta, and before I let one person up roar my whole family the friendship will be cut loose first. She means well in everything she does, but there are some people who are just meant to be bittersweet. The thing that really got to me is that she was aware of these actions and she did nothing to stop.It even got to the point where I would be scared to go out with her because I felt unsafe. She became a magnet to danger in my family eyes and mine. I was in a nerve shaking accident, I witnessed a murder, I almost got beat up and killed for her over a guy and to top it all off she chose to put me out of her car.

What really put the icing on the cake is when we went to Louisiana and she started acting funny towards me.I was really mad because I was too far away from home for that and plus I knew she was trying to show off for her family who we we're surrounded by. Some may say this is absurd but I feel that she was feeling like that was her chance to get me back from our previous fight. Now I feel a little settled and content in life since we're not talking

We were like total opposites, which is good when it comes to a friendship sometimes.I tried to be a friend to her and tried to guide her on a positive path in life, but she wants to do just what she's doing now, laying around doing what she does best; you can't try to help someone who isn't try to help themselves. She became a distraction to me when it came down to school. When it was time for Menyatta and I to go register for school, we found other things to do.It even got to the point where I would say "school isn't for everyone" and that I fitted the criteria. But I knew that wasn't me and that I had the type of parents who wasn't going for the laying around doing nothing.See Menyatta didn't go to high school so I don't know what made me think she would go to college. The only reason she graduated is because her mother worked at the school she attended.

I really hope that this will give her a wake up call and gives her the chance to find herself in life.If nothing else, I want her to go to school. She's not working so why not go to school so that one day she can be somebody in life I think that what happened with her and I is that we got too close.I was getting tired of her.Over the summer I stayed up under her, wherever there was Talisha there was Menyatta. I was even spending the night over her house and she was staying over mines. Then when we got back from down south every time I turned around she was walking through my door and by this time I was really tired of her.I had just spent my whole summer with her and I don't see how she wasn't getting tired of me.It got to the point where people thought we were gay.

I'm so happy with life right now.My New Year's resolution was for me to be stress free for "0" and that's exactly how I plan to keep it.My life is on the road of success and I feel like this, I'm on a mission and I can't be stopped under any circumstances.I count the loss of that friendship as a blessing and not as something that shouldn't have happened.I look back and I see that the crowd you hang around with can really mess you up.And now I've learned how not to look back on life without any regrets.

An adventurous man

named Christopher Columbus has

mad many successful voyages, but

one is the most important of all time.

Columbus was trying to find a short

sea route to the Indies. His plan was

to sail ,400 miles west along the

latitudes of the Canary Islands, to

reach a group of islands near Japan.

There the explorer planned to

establish a trading city where the

products of the East and the West

would be exchanged. He had a hard

time selling his simple plan.

Columbus was equipped

with three ships; there were the

Santa Maria and the two smaller

vessels, the Pinta and the Nina. The

Santa Maria was manned by forty

men, the Pinta by twenty six men,

and the Nina by twenty-four men.

Columbus and his men left

Palos Spain August third. Nine days

later they reached the Canary Islands.

The ships left San Sobastian on

September, sixth. He had fair trade

winds and smooth seas most of the

way.

It was October tenth when

the Crew decided to sail for three

more days and if they didn't fins any

land they were turning back. At two

A.M. they sighted an island, which Columbus named San Salvador. On October twelfth, the same day, Columbus landed on the beach at Fernandez Bay and found a New World. Columbus seems to think that it is an island of the Indies, near Japan or China. He also thinks that the natives are Indians.

The ships stayed a few days before heading to Bonia Bariay, Cuba. Columbus seems to think this is a part of China. They explored ten or twelve harbors, and sent men up-country to Holguin in hope that the native city was Peking, so that they could present a letter to the emperor of China. They couldn't find an emperor but the did find a few natives. From Cape Maisi the crew crossed the Windward Passage and sailed along the north coast of the island of Hispaniola. The place reminded Columbus so much of Spain that he named it Epanola or in English terms Little Spain.

On Christmas Eve the Santa Maria was wreaked on a reef in the Republic of Haiti. The local chief helped save the cargo and he seemed very friendly. Columbus decided to leave forty men to search for gold. Columbus then started home on the Nina sailing from Samana Bay on January 16, 14. He took several Indians with him that he captured

Hobbes and Machiavelli on Human Nature

Thomas Hobbes and Machiavelli shared a commonality in the time period in which they each lived. Separated by approximately 100 years, both thinkers were focusing on political theory. Hobbes' theory tended to focus on the social contract between a people and its government. Machiavelli's theory focused on the attributes that formed a successful ruler.

Examining both theories, a comparison is evident in that Machiavelli and Hobbes both seem to discuss the human nature of society. In Leviathan, Thomas Hobbes views human nature as individual self-preservation and as a place of constant war. There is a constant struggle between men. What causes this conflict amongst men? Hobbes believes that competition and glory causes war between men. He says, " If two men desire the same thing, which nevertheless they cannot both enjoy, they become enemies…and endeavor to destroy one another." He concludes that self-preservation is the only way to safeguard from being destroyed. The only way to preserve oneself is to become more powerful than the other. Government must also be instituted to ensure peace and security through whatever means necessary.Hobbes believes that life without government would be "poor, nasty, brutish and short."

In the Prince, Machiavelli views human nature as pertaining to those who are ruled and those who rule. He promoted a secular society and believed that morality stood in the way. He distrusts people and believes that "…in a time of adversity, when the state is in need of its citizens there are few to be found." He questions the loyalty of the citizens. Because of this, he advises the Prince that, "…because men are wretched creatures who would not keep their word to you, you need keep your word to them." Machiavelli believed that the secular form of government to be the most successful. His views were to benefit the prince by maintaining power rather to serve the well being of the citizens.

Hobbes and Machiavelli both have interesting ideas on Human Nature. Both of their ideas also contain an evident theme. The theme is the usage of fear as a means acquiring power and maintaining it. The theme of fear is not illustrated in great detail in Hobbes work as it is in Machiavelli's. Nevertheless an interesting comparison can be drawn between the two.

Hobbes believes that people naturally fear death. The easiest and safest way to avoid death was to create a centralized state. An autocracy would ensure the universal desire for life. According to Hobbes, people would give up their power collectively to one ruler. In turn, the people would shut up and do what they were told. The only right they would have would be the right not to be killed. They would live under a tyrannical ruler who had all powers to decide good and evil for the people. He believes that fear is essential to maintain power and authority of the people. This is evident in his text with, "And covenants, without the sword are but words, and strength to secure a man at all." Machiavelli poises the question to the Prince "is it better to be loved than feared or vice versa" He addresses this question in regards to what benefits a ruler more. He concludes that a prince cannot be both feared and loved.

Machiavelli believes that it is better to be feared by the citizens. This is seen as an "economy of violence" in which fear is used by violence to invoke a lasting impression on the people. This "economy" must happen at the beginning on an event where the timing is equally important. The violent act must be made into a spectacle done in the open where people can see and judge. People judge by appearances, so what they see will affect their mentality. The more violent the act the more fearful the individual will be of the same act upon them. Fear in a sense is used by both authors to train the people. It must be instilled upon them in order to maintain a successful regime. It is like the training of an animal. The master must instill on the animal that he is in charge. If he does not then the animal will overpower the master. The master must make the animal afraid of him by punishing it when it does wrong. Eventually the animal will realize who is in control.

As one can see that the views on Human nature differ in ways amongst the two authors. However an interesting commonality exists between the two. This commonality was shown to be the existence of fear in society. Fear in human nature can propel the individual in control to maintain power undisputed. By exploiting the fear of the people the leader can rise in power. The leader must know when to use violence and when not to. Once the leader has successfully discovered the balance between the two then he will

With the speedy advancement of the technology level, human beings are now being brought to an unprecedented era they have ever experienced. And mobile telephone, emerged as one of the most popular invention, seems to be an indispensable device that we can not live without. It is designed for providing both convenience and mobility. But while we are being attracted by such fashionable technology, are we also aware of its negative side? In fact, mobile can as well be the most annoying, unnecessary and time wasting device that ever invented.

Why?

On the surface, mobile phone is good because it provides certain convenience to people. However, it is also most annoying in the way that its endless ringing sound produces noise pollution to the environment. No matter in the public open space such as streets and parks or in the quiet closed areas like libraries, cinemas, theaters and during formal meetings, we can always hear the ringing bells and chatting voices over the crowd. The sounds can easily tear up the peacefulness of our mind. From that moment, you may probably loss the mood to enjoy your movies. And even the owners may sometimes get embarrassed by the incessant phone calls amid the tranquility. Mobile telephone creates annoying sound. It does not only affect our concentration and disturb our normal life but also deteriorate the quality of the quietness of the world.

When we see everyone using mobile telephone on streets, why then is the device most unnecessary? It is because people are using it without any actual needs. The mobile phone is sometimes too convenient that we can¡¦t help making habit of using it. Unfortunately, most of the conversations are trivial. Someone may argue that mobile phone offers a great deal of mobility, but actually, we can just count the number of telephone booths that are constructed on streets. The amount is already sufficient enough for us to deal with our daily needs and any urgent calls. Mobile phone is also a duplication of the telephone that most of the families have. We can feel convenient enough to call our friends by using them at home. In this sense, mobile phone seems to be a waste of resources. And from the medical angle, its electric waves released may even harm our healthy body. So, why should we bother to buy another phone that¡¦s the most unnecessary?

As a result of the convenience provided and people¡¦s greedy desire for its changeable design, many of us are getting more indulgent in its electronic world. We spend nights and days on chatting over the mobile phones, which consequently becomes time-consuming. We are not able to do something meaningful and practical at all. As a result, our academic or personal progress can be hindered greatly. When we are in search of the different shapes, functions and music possessed by a mobile telephone, or when we are trying hard to keep up with the voguish trend, our time and energy will gradually be stolen away secretly. Such obsession and waste of time can be very dangerous as it may probably direct us to a wrong path of our life. But it will be too late when we start to realize.

Undeniably, mobile telephone is a symbol of technological break through. It represents the most overwhelming fad nowadays. But when we use it, are we also making it the most annoying, unnecessary and time-wasting device? As a matter of fact, mobile telephone provides much more problems to the society than contributions. Therefore, please be aware of its impact all the time. If you still keep on using it without any limitations, you will at last suffer most severely by your own hands.

Please note that this sample paper on mobile telephone is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. In case you experience difficulties with writing a well structured and accurately composed paper on mobile telephone, we are here to assist you.Your college papers on mobile telephone will be written from scratch, so you do not have to worry about its originality.

Since 14, when the proposal of a wind plant on Buffalo Ridge was put into commission, the idea of wind as an alternative resource has sky rocketed. Seventy-three turbines have increased to over two-hundred-six in 18, than an overwhelming amount of near three-hundred in the year two-thousand-two. Minnesota's Lake Benton area around the Buffalo Ridge has become the largest wind farm outside of California. Lake Benton has become known as the "Wind power capital" of the American Midwest. The idea of wind as an alternative resource is rising more and more interests because of its low cost and environmental benefits.

The generators that can be seen are entirely made up of the Kenetech KVS- wind towers. Each turbine stands more than two-hundred feet high with rotor blades seventy to one-hundred feet long and weighs more than one-hundred tons. The turbines stand at about one-thousand-eight-hundred feet above sea level. Each turbine costs one-million dollars to install. When the wind is below eight miles per hour, they do not produce power. Above fifty-six miles per hour, they shut down and lock to protect themselves from possible damage. This allows the generators to work for more than 85 percent of the year. The bases of each turbine are eleven feet in diameter and are placed on a foundation of reinforced concrete. The foundation is mostly underground and is about forty to fifty feet in diameter and seven to ten feet deep. The turbines are made up of four subsystems including the rotors, nacelle, tower, and electronic equipment. The rotors convert the wind's energy into rotational shaft energy. The nacelle or enclosure contains a drive train, usually including a gearbox and a generator. The lower supports the rotor and drive train, and the electronic equipment includes controls, cables, ground support equipment, and intercom connection equipment.

The United States switch over to wind power is slowly coming along. There have been many identifiable benefits of wind generated power. Wind energy is one of the cleanest forms of energy available today. It is non polluting with no emissions, excessive noise or waste heat by products. Wind is also naturally occurring and abundant. Wind is a free, renewable resource with excellent long-term price stability due to easily projected operation and maintenance expenses. Lake Benton enjoys economic as well as environmental benefits.Wind farms provide new income for farmers and landowners where the turbines are sited. The wind industry also provides jobs to over fifty-thousand individuals worldwide. The wind generators take up little room and access roads occupy less than 1 percent of the area in a typical wind park. In Lake Benton's case, the other percent is used for farming, grazing, and typical activities.

The energy produced by a wind turbine throughout it's twenty year life span on Buffalo Ridge is eighty times larger than the amount of energy used to build, maintain, operate, dismantle, and scrapping it again. Also, it takes only two to three months for a wind turbine to recover all the energy required to build and operate it. Each turbine produces enough power to equal the amount of electricity consumption of one to two-hundred American homes. The electricity generated by the turbines is interconnected with the electric grid owned by the NSP at the Buffalo Ridge substation in Lake Benton. The electricity generated by the turbines goes through a step up transformer next to the base of the turbine and then travels from there to overhead lines along the road. From there, it travels to the NSP where it's stepped up again to match transmission voltage. The electricity travels along the high wire system to local distribution systems where it is used by homes and businesses. With ever decreasing costs of wind energy, wind power is increasing throughout the United States and the rest of the world. Over the last twenty years, the cost of electricity from wind power plants can generate electricity for less than five cents per kilowatt hour. If the U.S. continues to develop the wind power it has, soon we will be able to eliminate pollution causing energy sources and better our environment and ways of life.
