Fate Conquers All

There are some things that just go wrong even if one plans it perfectly because it is it is fate or destiny.Fate exists in some parts of our society. Some people choose to believe our lives are planned out for us; others believe that we are the ones that decide what is to happen with our lives. In William Shakespeare's play, "Romeo and Juliet", he emphasizes the large impact fate has on the characters. One believes that Romeo and Juliet's death is "in the stars" because of fate, coincidence, and the timing of their plan was just off and too quick, causing them their lives.

Fate, also known as destiny, plays a large part in the lovers' death. As Romeo goes on his way to the party, where he meets Juliet, he feels that this is the night that will change his life forever;

I fear, too early. For my mind misgives

Some consequence, yet hanging in the stars,

Shall bitterly begin his fearful date

With this night's revels and expire the term

Of a despised life, closed in my breast,

By some vile forfeit of untimely death.

But He that hath the steerage of my course

Direct my sail! On, Lusty gentlemen!

(Shakespeare, Romeo, I, IV, 106)

In that quote, it reveals Romeo's feelings as he approaches the Capulets'. He has a feeling that he is going to reach his destiny tonight. Also, the lovers come from families who are enemies. Romeo a Montague; Juliet a Capulet. With such enemies falling in love, marriage is impossible. They were destined to die because of the hatred between the two families. It is nearly impossible for Romeo and Juliet to love each other and live normal lives. Juliet's response to Romeo's name was, "My only love sprung from my only hate!" (Shakespeare, Romeo, I, V, 18). Their love, mixed in with their families' hatred, led to their death. Almost immediately after Romeo and Juliet's marriage, Tybalt and Mercutio began a duel. As Romeo attempts to stop them, but Tybalt stabs Mercutio. Struck by his friend's death, Romeo avenges his death by taking Tybalt's. This worsened the Capulets' and Montagues' relationship even more. Aside from family issues, if Romeo shook Juliet or tried to wake her up when she was "dead", she may have woken up then and prevented their death. Unfortunately, she awoke a few seconds too late. But Romeo even saw that she did not look dead; "Beauty's ensign yet is crimson in thy lips and in thy cheeks, and death's pale flag is not advanced there." (Shakespeare, Romeo, V, III, 4) She looked aliveRomeo knew that. Yet, he did nothing because his mind was clouded by Juliet's "death". Perhaps fate was at workat least it seemed like it. It was impossible for them to be lovers. Their fate was death since they came from families that despise each other.

Coincidence brought Romeo and Juliet together as well as bringing them death. Capulet prepares a large party, so Juliet would get a chance to know Paris. Capulet orders the Servant to inform the guests of the party. He is given a list of those people. However, the servant is illiterate, so he needs to find someone who can read, as stated, "…I am sent to find those persons whose names are here writ, and can never find what names the writing person hath here writ. I must to the learned." (Shakespeare, Romeo, I, II, 4) It was coincidence when the Servant comes upon Romeo and Benvolio and asks for their help. From him, Romeo finds out about the party and that Rosaline is invited. He gets convinced by Benvolio to attend this grand party, so he can compare Rosaline to other girls; this is the only reason they decided to go. It is at this party, where Romeo meets Juliet. If one thing during the process did not occur, Romeo would not have met Juliet. Everything happened coincidentally, from the illiterate servant, to Romeo's decision of attending this feastit was the beginning of the journey to their death.

Friar Laurence plans Juliet's "death" so carefully, but the cursed timing changes the expected positive outcomes, to the death of Romeo and Juliet. As part of the plan, Juliet takes the potion, which results in her "death" for two days. Friar Laurence asks Friar John to deliver a letter to Romeo, to inform him of Juliet's "death". Unfortunately, Romeo receives the news of Juliet's death before Friar John could reach him. They just miss each other because Friar John's trip to Mantua is delayed; "Sealed up the doors, and would not let us forth, so that my speed to Mantua there was strayed." (Shakespeare, Romeo, V, II, 11) Romeo immediately heads back to Verona to see Juliet one last time. After Friar Laurence is informed of the misfortune of the letter, his second plan is to wait for Romeo at Juliet's tomb. Here, the timing is once again, just off. Friar Laurence does not manage to reach Juliet's tomb before Romeo arrives. When Romeo reaches the tomb, he mourns over Juliet's dead body, not knowing she is alive. He then drinks the poison which he bought from the apothecary, and dies. Immediately after he commits suicide, Juliet awakens and Friar Laurence arrives; unfortunately, he is moments too late to inform Romeo. Seeing that Romeo is dead, Juliet kills herself. Shakespeare adds more tragedy to his play by using this cursed timing concept. The timing for Romeo and Juliet was off and too quick. Their plan may have worked, but time was against them, dragging them to their fate.

It is nearly impossible for Romeo and Juliet to prevent their death because of coincidence, fate, and cursed timing. It was definitely "in the stars" that they died. William Shakespeare expressed the idea of doomed fate in "Romeo and Juliet" effectively, adding more tragedy to this play. Many people in our society believe in the stars, and that they determine our fate and futureeven our lives. When something is "in the stars", it means that it is their fate or destinyit is meant to be and nobody can change what is to happen.

Die Another Day Halle Berry

The decisions made by Halle Berry in Die Another Day lift her character, Jynx, from the stereotypical bond girl to an independent character who creates a subplot of her own within the film. Her first entry shows her in a bikini, flirting with Brosnan (Bond) without the audience knowing of her background. After replying to his flirtatious comments with innuendos said in an innocent voice, we understand her to have a childlike and naïve exterior, but a dirty and sexual interior. Her love scene with Bond is one of the most passionate and explicit scenes that has been shown in any Bond film already the vigour and confidence Berry demonstrates in her character elevates her above the normal Bond girl.

Berry, when later attempting to assassinate an evil scientist in the same place as Bond is blowing up the arch-villain, makes a very interesting decision to emulate Bond's movements and style. Brosnan himself has worked a very distinct acting style into his interpretation of James Bond (such as the raised eyebrow, the heavy sigh, and the faint smile), all of which Berry chooses to recreate in her character. This apparent similarity between the two actors allows the audience to view Berry as more of an action figure than a sidekick.

However, after this point the character seems to be "set up", and so there is very little complexity in the decisions after this point. Only a couple of events show important decisions for the rest of the film. The meeting of the female villain, Miranda Frost, and Berry's character shows a contrast of the two confident and forthright people. Berry chooses to take a defensive stance, her eyes not looking at Frost, but instead around her, almost looking for help from the surrounding environment. Frost, on the other hand, has a constant smile with her eyes fixed on Berry, her body leaning forward in an aggressive manner. The decisions by the two actresses shows the conflict, but also shows the weak side and lack of femininity Berry's character has.

The final decision occurs at the end of the piece, in the final sex scene between Bond and Jynx rather than the male take the lead and be the dominating figure, Berry decides to take over as the shot fades, leaving the audience with the impression that Berry's character is much stronger and more adamant than Bond himself.

American Family

In the 160s, the American family consisted of four or five members, called the nuclear family father, mother, and two or three children.Where the father worked full-time the mother usually stayed home as a housewife. The traditional family has been changing rapidly enduring many changes in the recent decades.Changes such as structural and values regarding marriage and divorce, gender roles and same sex or homosexual families are noticeable changes that today's families have in the past generation.

Marriage is the main structure of the American family.Due to structural changes happening over the decades, Americans have become more accepting to the changes (Irvine 14A). During a survey in 18, 56 percent of adults were married, compared with nearly 75 percent in 17.While adding with the divorced, only slightly more than one in four marriages end in divorce during the 150s (Coontz 61).Today, about 50 percent of marriages result in divorce. The divorce rate has slowly been increasing since the 150s.Since then the divorce rate remained fairly constant throughout the 10s.The rise in divorce was probably caused by the increase in pregnancy.Stephen Kraus, a Connecticut-based market researcher for Yankelovich Partners, agreed that Americans are becoming more tolerant of divorce. This is partly because many people who are starting families may be products of divorce themselves.

One of the more noticeable changes in today's traditional family is the increase in single parent families. In 10, 7 percent of children lived in a household with their two biological parents compared to 86 percent in the 150s (Coontz 57).The percent of children living with single parents rose to 18. percent compared to 4.7 percent in 17 (Irvine 14A).For many single parent homes either a mother or a father will raise their children by themself. Money often becomes a big issue for a parent trying to raise their children by themself. Women are participating in working full-time jobs to support their children. Only one source of income is brought into the home making it tough to get everything their children need. Also having only one parent will exclude a mother or father's role in a child's life. For any child, male or female, both roles of the mother and father are essential for a child to mature properly and to have both male and female views and lifestyles around them.

Same sex or homosexual families are also becoming numerous. This is when two people of the same sex decide to raise children together.Attitudes towards homosexuality was at first hard to accept but people now are becoming more understanding. This may appear different or unusual to others.Criticism or a feeling of being outcasts may develop for families in this situation. This family will receive a great deal of moral and social support from each other, maybe bringing them closer together. However, they communicate, and this is essential for the child to understand the situation and to know that they are loved also.

Ever since the 150s, the American family moved away from the model of a traditional family structure.Due to the fact that families are undergoing changes, society itself has been remade. There are few areas of society that have changed as much as the family has over the last generation. The basic structures of the family along with the traditional family values have been transformed, and similar attitudes have also been reshaped.Families are smaller and less stable making marriage less important and the gender roles involved with marriage have become less traditional.Americans have been more accepting to these changes, while during the 150s they were not.Maybe society today is better now than it was before in the past.

In the short story, A Good Man is Hard to Find, the main character is the grandmother. Flannery O'Connor, the author, lets the reader find out who the grandmother is by her conversations and reactions to the other characters in the story. The grandmother is the most important character in the story because she has a main role in the stories principal action. This little old lady is the protagonist in this piece. We learn more about her from her direct conversation with the son, Bailey, her grandchildren, June Star and John Wesley, and the Misfit killer. Through these conversations, we know that she is a lady raised from a traditional background. In the story, her attitude changes more than once to accommodate the surroundings that she is in. With the data provided, we can tell that the grandmother goes from not wanting to go to Florida, to anxious to go, and in the end, I felt as if she went off the deep end. All of the sudden, the only thing she really concentrates on is Jesus and her not being killed.

The action in the entire story surrounds and normally begins with something the grandmother has said or done. At the very beginning of the story, she starts off by stating that she does not want to go to Florida. She would rather go to east Tennessee and tried anything she could to change Bailey's mind (Page 46). Later in the story, as they began the trip to Florida, the grandmother talked the entire time. She would tell stories of her youth to the grandchildren and lecture them about being more respectful to their native state, and to their parents. Although the grandmother is the protagonist, it is her fault that the trip ended in the devastating way that it did. She, unknowingly, led her entire family to their fate. She is even more responsible for the deaths because of what she brought on the trip with her. If there had been no cat, there would have not been an accident. If the accident would not have happened, the family had an extremely good chance to survive their vacation.

There are many things that happen in the story that gives more information about the grandmother. The reader can tell that the woman is paranoid by her conversations at the start of this story. She reads about the Misfit killer and assumes it would be dangerous to travel to Florida with a man like that on the loose. She is also a lonely person because she sneaks her cat, Pitty Sing, along for the ride. The author states that the woman did not want to leave the cat because it would miss her too much or would rub against a burner and asphyxiate itself (Page 47). I believe that the cat was the only thing that showed her love and attention. Her only son, had a family of his own, her grandchildren were older now, and she felt like she was not important to them anymore, and the children's mother was involved with the baby. By bringing the cat, she felt like she would not be lonely. The reader can also tell that the woman is extremely prejudice. She refers to the black child as a cute little pickaninny and a nigger.

You can also tell a lot about the old woman by what she is wearing. In the car, she wears white gloves, a sailor hat, and a navy blue dress. She states that the prominent clothes are worn so that if anything happens, the people that find her body will know that she was a lady (Page 47). I think she wore this outfit so that she could think she was something she was not. It is clearly seen that in her youth, she lived in prosperity. She had everything from youthfulness to money and to love. Now, she almost dreaded life because her beauty and youthfulness were gone. She would talk about her past because it would take her away from the misery of the present.

One of the most important scenes in the story takes place in the vehicle. The grandmother spots an old family graveyard that once belonged to a plantation. She tells the children that the graves were an old family burying ground (Page 48). Her grandson asks where the plantation went, and she states that the plantation is Gone With the Wind (Page 48). This statement has more meaning than just a casual remark. I believe that it is another way that the grandmother expresses her remorse to her present situation.

Although she may be referring to the movie, she also is referring to her life. It has unraveled and now she thinks it is lost.

The most action in the story takes place when the grandmother meets the antagonist. The family gets into an accident when the grandmother's cat startles Bailey.

After the wreck, they saw a car approaching from the distance. The three men get out of the car and the grandmother recognizes one of them from somewhere. At this point in time, it is her fault for turning down the desolate road, and her cat causing Bailey to wreck the car. She soon makes another mistake. She recognizes the third man as the Misfit killer (Page 4). This brings the eventual doom of the entire family. The escaped convicts might have let them go if she would not have made that statement, although that is just speculation. After this, the grandmother immediately tried to protect herself. She did not even plead for the lives of her only son and her grandson. They were taken out into the woods and shot. The story gets extremely interesting at this point because the grandmother starts referring to Jesus. She tries to convince the killer that he comes from good blood. This is a reference to her youth once again. In her days, people that were raised well in good families did not commit hainus crimes like murder. She could not believe that this man was capable of killing her. In the end, after her entire family was killed, she realized that her time was up. She made a last desperate attempt to save her life and ultimately failed. The Misfit killer shot her three times. The killer then says, she would have been a good woman if there had been someone to shoot her every minute of her life(Page 46). This statement leads me to believe that he knew what type of woman that she was.

The most important aspect of this story is the actual meaning of A Good Man is Hard to Find. Most people think that is a term meant just for a woman trying to find a man to fall in love with. In this story, it has a complete different meaning. Through the grandmother's eyes, it was not only good men that were gone, but it was also the good life. I believe she was ready for death, but this was not the death that she wanted.

"A person who exercises on a regular basis enjoys good nights sleep, a good appetite and a sense of well being throughout the day. Also exercise can keep your spirits up whenever dealing with depression and exercise allows you to have a relaxed lifestyle." I've been searching for some ways to get myself motivated and start exercising like I used to in high school. Since I've started college I haven't really exercised much and I've noticed that my muscles aren't as toned and I've put on a few pounds. But in order to lose weight, I have to not only eat the right nutritious foods, but also exercise regularly. My roommate and I have recently come up with a plan to lose weight and stay fit as well as healthy. We went grocery shopping and bought fruit, Healthy Choice meals, Lean Cuisines, and Weight Watcher Smart Ones. It's not only making a change in our eating habits that are going to help us lose a few pounds but we must be active and exercise. So we have began by walking daily, making several laps around our apartment complex. We also stretch and do other exercises such as crunches and using an AB-Roller.

Many people use excuses that keep them from having a healthy lifestyle such as not having he time to do it and are too lazy to get themselves motivated to exercise daily. The key to it is to make a plan and follow it.Keeping records of your progress is also helpful.Write down what you eat, keeping track of the calories, and the exercised that you do.Keep track of time and repetitions.Once you begin you will feel so much better. You'll have more energy, increased patience, and boosts your self-esteem.

Exercising does a lot of things for a person. But a good reason to do it is for weight management.Exercise reduces the risk of obesity and anorexia.Healthy weight management isn't about feeling deprived, restricted or following the latest fad diets. It's about keeping your weight under control without taking all of the fun out of life.Although exercising is easier said than done, you have to keep a positive attitude and be willing to work a little.Obesity and anorexia are two dangerous eating disorders that are very common.Being anorexic is starving yourself to lose weight and becoming too skinny, that it makes your body really sick.Obesity is eating too much food; becoming majorly over weight and it causes the body problems that you get so depressed and can't lose the weight. Then by being depressed, you'll more than likely eat more, causing your body to become even more obese.Exercise is very important in avoiding these dangers.Exercise enables you to develop a more positive attitude in all areas of life.It makes you less likely to become confused or depressed and also contributes to more emotional calmness and stability.

Another reason is for health reasons.Exercise helps the conditions of your heart, muscles and reduces the risks of heart disease. It also strengthens your bones and improves your posture and grace.Every part of the body, even the hair and nails, is served by the beneficial effects of building, of heart building, of blood building, of bone building, and of character building.Every part of the body is directly and physical activity.Exercise also improves your breathing and helps your body eliminate wastes.

Exercise gives you more power to fulfill your goals too.If you're a smoker, exercise can also help you quit.Believe it or not, I've tried it and it's working. When your exercising, you feel short of breath and by being short of breath you'll be more up to quitting so that when you exercise, you can breath right.Exercise improves your willpower and increases your ability to handle stress without the cigarettes.

A few more interesting facts about exercising is that it reduces chances of anxiety attacks and adds a glow your complexion. Also exercise increases your enjoyment of having sex and makes a forceful statement to yourself of love, control, direction, focus and responsibility.Exercise should include five major things. Stretching for flexibility, ease of movement and prevention of injury. Doing Aerobics for respiratory and cardiovascular fitness and endurance. Weight training for muscle strength and endurance and for body shaping. Providing yourself with appropriate rest and sleep to match the activity demand. And refueling by drinking water and making food choices that are nutritional and sufficient to support performance.

Exercising can be done in many ways. Some simple examples include raking leaves, house cleaning, dancing, and even playing actively with children. Also sports are good examples of exercise; basketball, cheerleading, baseball, football, soccer, golf, cycling, track and tennis. Maybe you enjoy jogging, running, or even taking a brisk walk, or swimming. All of these activities are good kinds of exercise and make it fun to keep in shape. Aerobic exercise conditions the heart and lungs by increasing the oxygen available to the body and by enabling the heart to use oxygen more efficiently. Exercise alone cannot prevent or cure heart disease. It is only one factor in a total program of risk reduction; examples of other factors are high blood pressure, cigarette smoking and high cholesterol level. In addition to cardiovascular benefits, other benefits of aerobic exercise include Control of body fat, increased resistance to fatigue and extra energy, toned muscles and increased lean body mass, decreased tension and aid in sleeping, increased general stamina.

I hope that I have encouraged you to have a healthy lifestyle and to exercise to keep your body in the shape it should be in. You should always put your body first and make sure that its in good shape. Just remember all the things that I have told you that exercise does for you and all of its advantages. I hope that you my advice into consideration and start your own exercise program today. It doesn't mean you have to become a member at a gym or hire a trainer, it means that you can exercise and have your own program right at home. Good Luck!

The Importance of Organizational Behavior

"The study of organizational behavior facilitates the process of explaining, understanding, predicting, maintaining, and changing employee behavior in an organizational setting" ( Ratzburg, 00, para 4 ). This definition examines human behavior from a psychological aspect because it encompasses elements of the individual personality. It also includes the social aspect of human interaction in a group setting. When people join together in an organization to accomplish an objective, some kind of structure is required. People make up the internal social system of the organization. They consist of individuals and groups. They form, change and disband.

Managers must consider personal and environmental factors to fully understand how people behave in organizations. Human behavior is complex and at times very confusing. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the importance of the study of organizational behavior, to managers, as a vital ingredient in the success of organizations.

The human organization today is not the same as it was yesterday, or the day before. People are the living, thinking, feeling beings who work in the organization to achieve their objectives. In the past, most organizations were bureaucracies. In organizational behavior, this term has a very special meaning, beyond its negative connotation. Max Weber, the famous German sociologist suggested that organizations would thrive if they become bureaucracies by emphasizing legal authority, logic, and order. He argued that the rational and logical ideas of bureaucracy were superior to building the firm on the basis of charisma or cultural tradition (Schermerhorn, Hunt & Osborn, 000). Today, most modern managers have a management philosophy that reflects an underlying respect for people and their capabilities.

The new emphasis on people at work was a result of trends that have been developing over a long period of time. It has helped bring human values into balance with other values at work. Instead of a built-in "pecking order" like the bureaucratic system, successful leaders now strive to achieve organizational goals through participative management. Managers discuss with employees what the group is trying to achieve and how they can collectively best accomplish these goals.Leaders communicate their priorities, values, and beliefs through the themes that consistently emerge from what they focus on. These themes are reflected in what they notice, comment on, measure and control. Through role modeling, teaching and coaching, leaders reinforce the values that support the organizational culture.

Conversely, when an organization is dysfunctional, communication is indirect. Workers don't talk to each other face- to-face. Instead they use memos or e-mails. Conflicts are kept undercover. People keep track of what upsets them, but they refuse to bring these issues up at meetings. Also, requests for policy clarification are ignored. Direct questions are met with hostility (Jones, 1). These no-nonsense leaders scoff at the "touchy-feely" skills of communicating and listening well. Instead, the ability to do the job well and quickly is the only measure for a productive organization. These negative leaders act domineering and superior with people. To get the work done, they hold over their personnel such penalties as loss of job, reprimand in the presence of others, or days off without pay.

Fortunately, effective leaders who emphasize interpersonal skills are aware that they do not understand employees' needs. They recognize the variety of needs that motivate employee behavior, and solicit input from employees to better understand their needs. If there is no communication, employees cannot know what their coworkers are doing, management cannot receive information inputs, and supervisors cannot give instructions.

Managers should also be sensitive to ethnic, national, gender and age differences. Employees with high needs for power must be given opportunities to exercise influence. The employee with high needs for achievement must be allowed to excel at work.

Managers can also increase employee motivation by training, coaching, and task assignments. Managers should ensure that rewards are linked to good performance and that valued rewards such as time-off, and flexible work schedules are available. Knowledge of motivational drives helps managers understand the work attitudes of each employee. They can then deal with employees differently according to the strongest motivational drive in each.

Finally, managers should be aware that morally mature employees are more likely to be sensitive to inequities at work. At the same time, these employees are less likely to be selfish or self-centered. Morally mature employees will act ethically for the common good of all employees and the organization. They can be management's best allies in bringing about organizational change.

In conclusion, organizations are complex social systems composed of numerous interrelated components. They can be complicated to understand. Managers who design, develop, and improve organizations must have a mastery of the basics of organizational behavior. Although human behavior is complex and confusing, thorough knowledge of how people react in the work environment, empowers managers to successfully meet organizational goals.

Previously know as human relations, organizational behavior has emerged as an interdisciplinary field of value to managers. Managers are required to plan and organize, but the primary goal of a leader is to influence others to seek defined objectives enthusiastically. As managers are promoted to positions of leadership, technical skills become proportionately less important. Instead the leader's human skills, the ability of work effectively with people and to build teamwork, become a major part of leadership behavior.

your wack Barbados shares many common features with other Caribbean islands. Barbados shares in a rich Caribbean musical heritage ... especially Reggae and Calypso rhythms. Barbados also shares the distinctly Caribbean style of fine dining with blends of Creole, Indian curry, and European often centered around local fishes, fruits and vegetables. The semi tropical climate of Barbados and the cooling trade breezes blowing into the Caribbean from the Atlantic are also common to Barbados as well as to her neighbors. Barbados also shares in the dark history of slavery in the Caribbean which results in a local population that is mostly black but which also has significant white and mulatto minorities as well as Jewish, East Indian, South American, and other minorities which unite to create a people that is distinctively Bajan.

On the other hand, Barbados is at the same time unique and distinct from her Caribbean neighbors. Her uniqueness may be explained by her unique geology which in turn helps to explain her unique geography which in turn helps to explain her unique history which in turn helps to explain her unique social and economic conditions that exist at the present time.

GEOLOGY

The geology of Barbados is unique within the Caribbean.

First, a perspective on time is helpful. The island was formed around 1 million years ago, but this is just an instant when compared with the age of earth itself. On a comparative basis, earth is around 4,000 times older than the island of Barbados. Similarly, the age of the dinosaurs is 65 times older than the island of Barbados. That is, Barbados is around 1 million years old, but the last dinosaur lived around 65 million years ago! So, on a relative, comparative basis, Barbados is a mere infant.

The formation of Barbados has to do with the enormous plates that form earths outer layer. These plates sit on semi liquid, molten rock and thus float and move about. We are talking minuscule movements but which over millions of years can have earth forming consequences. Barbados is located at the junction of two monstrous plates ... the Caribbean plate and the Atlantic plate which are each part of the sea bed. As these two plates came together over time, the Atlantic plate was pushed under the Caribbean plate which was pushed up and over the Atlantic plate. In other words, the sea bed was pushed up and up until it became exposed, and the island of Barbados was formed.

At the same time, the pressure of the two plates grinding together created cracks and faults in the Caribbean plate along a line around 100 miles to the west of Barbados (toward the Caribbean), and this resulted in a series of volcanic eruptions along this fault line which produced the neighboring islands of Grenada, St. Vincent, St. Lucia, Martinique, Dominica, etc.. So, these neighboring islands are borne from the same processes as Barbados, but it is Barbados alone which is an island of sea bed pushed to the surface while the others are volcanic in origin. This explains why Barbados is relatively flat and hilly while her neighbors consist mostly of rugged mountains. And, this also accounts for the mostly arable and tillable land of Barbados which allowed her to be an agricultural leader in the region especially during the heady days when Caribbean sugar was king.

As the sea bed rose toward the surface but before becoming exposed, it first became a coral reef attracting marine life. Over the immense time this process was underway, the marine life (carbon based as are all living plants and animals on earth) moved naturally through the cycle of life and death so that the sea bed became covered with the remains of dying plants and animals. When the process finally pushed the sea bed to the surface, the exposed sea bed consisted of various types of limestone which is carbonate rock. This limestone appears everywhere in Barbados and is known locally as coral rock. You will see limestone boulders everywhere, and where roads are cut through the hills, the exposed sidewalls are limestone. The locals have used this coral rock to form building blocks for homes and other buildings, crushed it for road construction, and use it as raw material for manufactured products such as cement. The process of dying marine life falling to the sea bed also has resulted in marine fossils being present everywhere in this coral rock, so walking along rocky cliffs will reveal marine fossils in every other rock. It is also this same process of dying life being embedded in sediment that produces crude oil, and there are quite a number of oil wells on the island although the production is not significant.

The semi porous nature of the limestone coral rocks has allowed rain water to seep into the soil rather than to run off. This results in an available fresh water source reachable by wells and has also produced rain erosion manifested in many gullies and caves. Many of the caves are available for tourist inspections and tours.

Of course, the entire island did not surface at once, and the first part of the island to be exposed is the eastern part of the island known as the Scotland district. Quite understandably, this is now the highest and hilliest part of the island. Although the primeval rain forest jungle has largely been cleared on Barbados, the eastern hills still contain swatches of jungle. The eastern coastline also shows the effects of another force of nature over time, and that is the exposure to the constant easterly trade winds with the constant pounding of surf. This has produced sea erosion along the eastern coastline as the sea has carved into the exposed limestone producing cliffs and sea stacks which are oddly shaped rocks jutting up from the sea along the coastline. The sense of natures powerful forces is very evident along the east coast which many would claim is the most beautiful part of the island but also the harshest environment and thus the least habitable part of the island.

Clearly, Barbados geology is one aspect of her uniqueness and which also contributes to her unique geography, history, economy and culture.

In The Prince, Machiavelli establishes five sets of principles addressing achieving and retaining political power and the ways in which to ensure success. The five sets of principles are praise vs. censorship, liberality vs. parsimony, feared vs. loved, faith by honesty vs. trickery and fortune as a woman.

Ideally, during the first comparison, he is trying to establish the fact that men, whom are successful leaders, share a two-sided demeanor. The one side is that of the virtuous man for the people that need only see the good in people. The other side is the man of vices for the followers who see beyond the visions the eyes behold. To be successful a leader must understand the difference and be willing to take hold of his vices if that is what the situation requires.

The second excerpt conveys the opinion that to be success is achieved more often from being stingy and appearing liberal, than from being liberal and appearing stingy. The stingy leader gains wealth and arms without taking from the people. Therefore, in later ruling, he is able to post war upon those that oppose him without taxation. This, in the eyes of his followers will show intelligence and self worth and leave him liberated in the minds of his people.

The excerpt over love and fear is the most intriguing to me and holds the most truth. As a manager of a large company, I completely agree with the concept that your people have to have some fear of you in order to respect you.If there is no fear of consequence to wrong doings, then they are more apt to violate the rules.Whether it be the rules of the company, or in Machiavelli's case, rules of the kingdom.

The excerpt over faith contradicts my theory on that subject.Machiavelli believes you sometimes need to contradict some of the promises you make bye deceiving your people with a quick tongue. On the contrary, I believe that the smart leader sees the mountain in the distance of the tracklayers and has the ability to plan for the mountain to be moved aside without the laborers ever knowing it was there.

Fortune as a woman is a truly ingenious concept. So many times the fall of a man is related to the chaos created by a woman. In addition, as Machiavelli contends, it is the leader or man with the foresight to instill fail-safes against this chaos that will ensure his longevity and survival.

I believe Eliduc abides by most of Machiavelli's rules in the story of his ventures. He displays extreme loyalty to his king in Brittany even after being exiled to another land and falsely accused of crimes against the king he love so much.He displays cunning and whit once in the land of Exeter as he fights for the King of the land.Eliduc adopts the principles of rule that Machiavelli establishes in many other incidents. However, Eliduc could have benefited greatly as a reader of Machiavelli on one concept, "Fortune".

Eliduc left his wife Guildeluec in Brittany and once in Exeter fell madly in love with the King's daughter, Guilliadun.Eliduc established no fail-safes with Guilliadun, set no boundaries, and even forsakes the King and his wife by his love for her. This mistake of love for a woman, without the foresight of chaos, closed his eyes to the probabilities of future realities and indeed opened the door to chaos and heartache upon his return to Brittany.

This also supports my altered view of deceit as a leader.Had Guilliadun known Eliduc had a wife in Brittany, by her reactions, she would have never fallen so deeply in love with him in the first place. This deceit is birth of part of the reason "fortune" turned to chaos upon their return to Brittany.

One of a manager's responsibilities is to inspire staff and encourage them to strive for excellence and remain motivated even during the difficult times. While this task is challenging, there are measures a manager can take to generate enthusiasm in any working environment.Although different people are moved by different desires, values and goals, there are a number of generally agreed-upon motivators to which most people respond.

Every employee deserves a clear understanding of what behaviors and outcomes are expected. Many managers are so unclear that they make it seem as though they are hiding the target.Providing a clear vision for every expectation helps all involved in the long run.All employees should start off on the right foot with a thorough orientation program. The first few weeks and months on the job are crucial for new hires, especially when it comes to establishing attitudes about the position, coworkers, management and the organization. The overall goal of orientation is to help the new employee learn about the organization as soon as possible, so that they can begin contributing. Some managers have experienced high turnovers of newly hired employees, and it is common for over half of all new hires in hourly paying jobs to leave within their first year of employment.Managers with effective orientation programs have found that their new employees stay longer.

Employees should be personally congratulated for doing good work.Over and above monetary reward, what people crave is praise in some form. They need assurances that their efforts are known, valued and appreciated.Sometimes all it takes to satisfy this deep desire is a sincere "well done," preferably delivered in front of their peers.Different employees are motivated by different things, whether it is money, travel, training, promotions, or a flexible schedule. The best way to find out what motivates someone is to ask them.

Employee feedback is another tool used to motivate employees.Feedback is the amount of information an employee receives about how well or how poorly he or she has performed. The annual performance review is important but has limitations. The appraisal interview presents both an opportunity and a danger. It is an emotional experience for the manager and the employee, because the manager must communicate both praise and constructive criticism.A major concern for managers is how to emphasize the positive aspects of the employee's performance while still discussing ways to make needed improvements. If the interview is handled poorly, the employee may feel resentment, and conflict may result, which could be reflected in the employee's future work.Once the appraisal interview has been completed, it is important that the manager communicate with the employee so that the employee has a clear understanding of how and where he or she stands in the eyes of the manager of the organization. In this interview, the manager should emphasize counseling and development, and not just tell the employee how he or she rates without some type of explanation.Focusing on development gives both parties an opportunity to consider the employee's performance-what has been done well and what needs to be improved. The advantage of feedback is that it helps employees to understand the effectiveness of their performance and contributes to their overall knowledge about the work.

Many of us would have to agree that having a fulfilling job makes an employee perform better.Managers should strive to make the employee's job as interesting as possible. It is a fact of life that familiarity breeds contempt. That's why one of the great demotivators is plain old boredom.By making the employee's work meaningful will spur him or her to realize his or her highest potential. When people's work excites them, they come alive; they walk differently, they talk differently, they work differently. That's why people who really love what they do- actors and artists, for example- will undergo incredible hardships for the privilege of pursuing their dreams. If a manager wants the staff to do their jobs with the same sort of dedication, making sure they enjoy what they are doing will make a difference. This may require that you build more decision making into their work, more creativity, more variety, and more challenge. When employees are able to make good sense of their abilities, they will repay you with top performances.Giving them additional responsibility does not mean simply giving them more work.It is an opportunity to provide them with work of greater importance that requires a higher level of knowledge and skill. It is job enrichment, not job enlargement. When an employee remains in the same job for more than five years, something may be wrong- with them or with the manager. If for any reason they are not promotable, that means they have not gained any new knowledge or skills under their leader.Managers ought to provide help and direction by making sure all employees are exposed to training inside or outside the company.Managers should enforce training as an annual program for the employee's growth.

Lastly, when members of your staff feel that they are underpaid it sends the message that your company does not value their work.Managers should be sure that what they are paying is in line with current standards.Government reports, trade publications and job board sites are a few resources that can offer assistance to department leaders. Why should someone work in a place in which they are being exploited? The answer is, they shouldn't.Pay equity is critical for both motivation and for the attraction and retention of employees.

Money alone cannot guarantee productivity among staff members. While competitive compensation is important, your staff wants to fee successful and professionally fulfilled. It can be the key to retention and long-term loyalty. There's no formula for becoming an effective motivator, but maintaining open lines of communication is a good start.Your willingness to answer questions, provide feedback and encourage creative expression can be a start for new ideas.

Maintaining a highly motivated staff is key to a company's success.A lack of employee enthusiasm can alter your company's productivity, and ultimately, your bottom line. There are several factors which affect motivation.A combination of techniques that matches the unique needs and personalities of your employees will bring the most effective results.

"…After that my guess is you'll never hear from him again… The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist and like that, he was gone." This quote comes from what I have, for years, considered the best movie I have ever seen, 'The Usual Suspects'.I first watched the movie about 4 years ago and have loved it ever since. But whenever someone asks me what my favorite movie is the question is always followed with another question, Why?, What makes this movie so much better then any other movie? This question isn't the easiest one to answer for a couple reasons. There have been so many movies made in the past that it's hard to compare one movie to every other and say it's the best This is little wordy. All you need to write is that this is YOUR favorite movie, then move right into giving your reasons for your choice. When established critics give their "ten best," they do [usually] do not claim them to be THE ten best. For this reason the view of one movie being better then another has to be an individualized view that is based on one's taste is movies.I personally like movies that keep me on the edge of my seat from start to end and makes me go back to rethink the way I intrepided spelling parts of the movie after it's over. This was why I liked 'The Usual Suspects' so much, it kept me wondering what was going to happen next and had me re-watch the movie the second it was over to pick up on the true meaning of the movie that sloppy.Even in a rough draft, be more careful. Which wasn't clear until after it was over.

'The Usual Suspects' is a movie that is told through the eyes of the only living suspect in a robbery the occurred the night before. The suspect, Verbal Kint, is telling an officer the story of the events leading up to and during a robbery that took place the night before. What the officer, special agent Kouyon, doesn't realize is, Verbal is taking the names, places and sometimes even the events leading up the time of the robbery from flyers and mug shots on the bulletin board of the officer's wall. This is what makes the movie so amazing. You are lead to believe this story of robbery, death end deception that occurs over the course of a couple months and in the end find out almost the entire movie was made up by Verbal Kint while he was in the police station.Verbal would only use the few facts that agent Kouyon gave him when telling his accounts of what happened, any name or place that wasn't mention past participle, not noun was taken for something on the bulletin board.Slow down J You need at least an additional clause, perhaps even another sentence, to render this clearly

One of the first things Verbal tells the agent before he starts telling his side of the story is "I'm not a rat agent Kouyon". This is something that he says on more then than one occasion in the movie. This statement makes less and less sense each time he says it because he will always continue answering agent Kouyon's questions. The first time I saw this I didn't understand why he would keep saying he's not a rat and them then go on with what he was previously saying.I believe this statement, like many other things in the movie, was put in because the write spelling wanted you to watch the movie a second time and realize it was all their adverb, not possessive adjective. From the beginning I should have been able to tell something didn't make sense but I wasn't paying attention to all the little things that added up to every thing being one big lie.Spell out what you mean; write everything you want me to understand.I think I can infer your meaning, but you want it to be unmistakable.

'The Usual Suspects' wasn't a very big hit in theaters but did exceptionally well then it was released on video. This was due in large part to how the movie ended. The ending made me, as well as many others, want to watch it again to see what I didn't pick up on the first time. This was one of the main reasons I liked the movie so much, the fact that I could watch it over and over again and still see something that I didn't pick up on before.

At the end of the movie one of the detectives realized that the whole story was a fake and tries to go after Verbal Kint but by then he was gone. This is was another reason I liked the movie so much. The life that Verbal Kint lives is one that is very lucrative and manipulative and it leaves so much up to the imagination. He could be anywhere at anytime and you would just think he was a normal person. The life that he lives is a total secret, much like the life of the President of the United States. Most people dream of being president because they would have a lot of power and get to hear about everything that the general public isn't aloud allowed to heard about.Verbal Kint lives this life without having to serve anyone, his only worry is getting out alive. This seems a little scary to me the pres is presumably physically safe, but Kint, I gather, is not.Do you want to say something more about "living dangerously?" This life secrecy is a life that I wish I could have only because I know I can't.I know I'll never live a life where I never have someone to tell everything to or a life in which I would need the ability to walk way from everything and everyone I know in a heart beat.

The ability of Verbal Kint to make up a complete lie the[?] keep the story straight is another thing that makes his character so fascinating. The genius behind someone who is able to make up a story like this one completely in his head is remarkable. It would be like having the ability to go to a class and not take any notes yet some how end up with an A on every assignment through out the semester.

My fascination with 'The Usual Suspects' is, like any movie I like, a fascination that comes from the ability to dream of being a character in the movie and knowing it will only be a dream.I wouldn't want to live a life as dangerous as Verbal Kint's because I wouldn't want to take the risk of being killed but to be able to dream about and add to the story line in my head how every I please is what makes me like a movie.

Every person in this world has their own distinctive personality and behavior. People may wonder why an individual may act the way they do. Thus psychologists had put this into a study of whether an individual's behaviors are caused by hereditary or the environment. This study is known as the nature-nurture debate. This essay will discuss the nature-nurture debate in relation to how it influences the human traits and behavior focusing on twin and adoption studies. Furthermore the essay will also discuss how hereditary and the environment influences on the behavior of intelligence base on twin and adoption studies.

The debate of nature versus nurture had been dated back to the time of Greek philosophers like Plato and Aristotle (Crooks & Stein, 11). In this context, according to Feldman (17), nature means the genetic influence on the individual's behavior. In relation to that, nurture means the effect the environment has on that individual, for example influence of parents or friends. The purpose of the nature-nurture debate is to explain the effect of genetic influence and the environment on the development of human trait and behavior (Crooks & Stein, 11).

The history of nature-nurture debate started off with famous philosophers like John Locke and Jean Jacques Rousseau (Feldman, 17). John Locke believed that human behavior is solely influenced by nurture. By this is meant that human were born with an empty brain and we learnt and developed through the experiences in life (Myers, 000). In contrast, Jean Jacques Rousseau suggested that human development was due to individual's genetic factors which means that human trait and behavior is more or less develop the moment of birth (Feldman, 17). In the present time, psychologists share the same thinking that both nature and nurture interdependently rely on each other in human development (Westen, 00). Clearly it can be seen that the concept of the debate had changed. Now, psychologists are more interested in to what extend can genetic factors and the environment, affect the development of human trait and behavior (Feldman, 17).

In the support of the nature-nurture debate, psychologists used the studies of twins. There are two types of twins, identical twins and fraternal twins. Identical twins are from the same fertilized egg of the mother and they share the same genes as each other ( E pg 6). In addition, fraternal twins are from different egg cells and they do not share the same genes. In other words, identical twins share 100 percent of their genetic contents and fraternal twins share 50 percent of the same content (Wortman, Loftus & Weaver, 1). For example, in the study of a genetic based disorder, schizophrenia, identical twins are rated four times higher in getting the disorder than fraternal twins (Neil, 001). From just the studies of these two types of twins, researchers could only estimate the degree of environmental influence on behavior. So in order for researchers to find out the extent of genetic influence on human behavior, identical twins of the same genetics but were raised in different environment are used.

An example for the effect of the genetic influence on human behavior, are the identical twins Gerald Levey and Mark Newman. According to Wade and Tavris (18), these two twins were separated at a very early stage, they were brought up in different cities. What the researchers found out was that both of them have many similarities. They are both bachelors and have the same job as firefighters, even have the same hobbies and favorite food. So from this study, it can be concluded that genetic influence does play a part in the development of human.

Another form of study in support of the nature-nurture debate is the study of adoptees. Research made has conclude that between the biological parents and adoptive parents, the adoptee is more similar to his or her biological parents (Sodorow, 15). Adoption studies have found evidence that adopted children who share genes with their biological parents are greatly influence by genetic on their IQs (G pg 18). Similar studies have also found that adoptees share the same religious value as their biological parents rather than adoptive parents (Sodorow, 15).

Intelligence provides a better understanding to the discussion of the nature-nurture debate. According to (Miele, 00), various studies on intelligence of identical twins being rear apart had shown the result to be 0.78. Following that, the fact that correlations in IQ between parents and the adopted child is about 0.1, and the result between the adopted child and the natural children of the adoptive parents is about 0.. Fisher (118, as cited in Miele, 00) calculated the correlation for any heritable trait on cases such as the identical twins. The reading would be 1.00 since the twins share the exact genes and for fraternal twins, the reading is 0.5. Surprisingly, the tests conducted on identical and fraternal twins who were rear apart reveal the following results. The higher one of the twins scored, the lower the other one gets. From this, (Miele, 00) conclude that since the results is quite similar to the predictions, genetic factors do influence in human development.

In adoption studies for intelligence, Nyborg (17) stated that the IQs of the adopted child is related to the IQs of his or her adoptive parents and non biological siblings. By this is meant that the environment the individual is in can also help in developing his or her intelligence. In contrast, according to (G pg 18), the influence of the non biological parents and siblings of the adoptee will decline as age decline. Following that, the IQs of the adopted children is highly similar to their biological parents than their adoptive parents. From this, it can be said that both genetic and environment influence the adoptees in their development in intelligence.

In conclusion, this essay has discussed the general role of the nature-nurture debate and how it can affect the human traits and behavior. Clearly it can be seen that both genetic factors and the environment can influence the intelligence in human through the studies of twins and adoptees.
