strong that in his mind he is transported back in time to relive one of the happier days of

his life. It was a time when no one argued, Willy and Linda were younger, the financial

situation was less of a burden, and Biff and Happy enthusiastically welcomed their father

back home from a long road trip. Willys need for the drug is satiated and he is

reassured that everything will turn out okay, and the family will soon be as happy as it

was in the good old days.

The next flashback occurs during a discussion between Willy and Linda. Willy is

depressed about his inability to make enough money to support his family, his looks, his

personality and the success of his friend and neighbor, Charley. My God if business

doesnt pick up, I dont know what Im gonna do! is said by Willy after Linda figures the

difference between the familys income and their expenses. Before Linda has a chance to

offer any words of consolation Willy blurts out Im Fat. Im very--foolish to look at,

Linda. In doing this he has depressed himself so much that he is visited by a woman with

whom he is having an affair. The womans purpose in this point of the play is to cheer

him up. She raises his spirits by telling him how funny and loveable he is, saying You do

make me laugh....And I think youre a wonderful man.. And when he is reassured of his

attractiveness and competence, the woman disappears, her purpose being fulfilled. Once

again the drug has come to the rescue, postponing Willys having to actually do

something about his problem.

The next day, when Willy is fired after initially going to ask his boss to be relocated is

when the next journey into the past occurs. The point of the play during which this

episode takes place is so dramatic that willy seeks a big hit of the flashback. Such a big

flashback in fact, that he is transported back to what was probably the happiest day of his

life. Biff was going to play in Ebbets field in the All-Scholastic Championship game in

front of thousands of people. Willy couldnt be prouder of his two popular sons who at the

time had everything going for them and seemed destined to live great, important lives,

much more so than the boy next door, Bernard. Willys dependency on the past is

becoming greater by the hour, at this rate, he cannot remain sane for much longer.

Too much of anything, even a good thing, will probably become a bad thing. Evidence

of this statement is seen during Willys next flashback, when the drug he has been using

for so long to avoid his problems backfires, causing him to burnout, quite possibly a side

effect of overuse. This time he is brought back to one of the most disturbing moments in

his life. Its the day that Biff had discovered his fathers mistress while visiting him on one

of his trips to ask him to come back home and talk with his math teacher to give him the

four points he needed to pass math and graduate high school. This scene gives the reader

a chance to fully understand the tension between Willy and Biff, and why things can

never be the same. Throughout the play, the present has been full of misfortune for the

most part, while the opposite is true for the past. The reader is left to wonder when the

turning point occurred. What was the earth-shattering event that threw the entire Lowman

family into a state of such constant tension? Now that event is revealed and Willy is out

of good memories to return to. Its as if Willy is all out of his drug.

The comparison between Willys voyages into the past and the use of a narcotic is so

perceptible because of its verity. When Willys feeling down, or life seems just too

tedious and insignificant, or when things just arent going his way, why not take a hit of

his favorite drug, memories. The way he overuses the past is sad because the only thing

its good for is enabling Willy to go through one more day of his almost pathetic life, full

of anger, confusion, depression, false hopefulness, and a feeling of love which he is trying

very hard to express to his sons who dont quite seem to accept it.

The last flashback Willy experiences is the last one he would ever have. When he

finally realizes that he is, Worth more dead than alive and his son Biff finally confronts

him about his life, Willy decides to end it all when he has his last flashback with Ben.

Willy felt that he could, Die the death of a saleman though it failed when only his

family and only friend Charley and his son Bernard attend his funeral. A misserable and

sad end to a man who could have easily helped himself if he only had accepted reality

instead of using his drug as an escape.

The Cold War was a contest between the USA and the Soviet Union. Wilson believed that the values of the United States were in fact universal values of peace and democracy. In 118 Woodrow Wilson, the American president published his Fourteen Points which called for a democratic peace based on the rights of self determination of all nations and the setting up of an international body, the League of Nations, to solve conflicts.

But the world was changing. In Russia in 117 Lenin and his Communist Party had come to power. Even worse for Wilson, his ideas were rejected in his own country, the United States. Wilson was pleased that the Treaty of Versailles that ended World War One established a League of Nations, but then found that the United States would not join. The League of Nations was rejected by the Senate, the upper house of the US Congress. Instead the Untied States tried to secure its future through the Washington Conference of 11- which agreed that the US Navy should be of equal strength to the largest navy in the world, the British. In the 10s and 0s, American foreign policy was dominated by isolationism, a refusal to intervene in Europe even when fasicsts, nazis and communists were on the march against American-style democracy in Europe. Those who support American power in the world today still worry that if the rest of the world criticises the United States too much it will retreat into its shell again and leave Europe and Australia at the mercy of a new (presumably Asian) religious fascim.

Despite or because of its spectacular economic growth, American capitalism hit a major snag in the Great Depression that began in 1 and economic problems increased the mood of isolationism in the US public, that is a mood of cutting the United States off from the worlds troubles. The United States attempted to limit Japanese expansion.Roosevelt used economic sanctions approximately twelve times in response to Japanese expansion from 14-141. He imposed sanctions to negate the increase in resource base derived from these invasions, thus keeping Japanese imperialistic potential constant.Given Roosevelt's strategic economic tightening on Japan, war was inevitable.

It was a brisk July morning when Jack Byrd first heard the news of the Klondike.The thought of it was in his head for many weeks after. Finally, three weeks later, he told his wife, Anita, about his plans.

It was two days later; Jack had quit his job, bought two steamboat tickets to Dyea, Alaska, and bought and packed enough food for a year.It was August rd at 110am when they boarded an old steamboat named "Elly Mae". Here is where they met their first piece of bad luck.

It was later during the evening on the second day of their trip and both Jack and Anita were settling in for the night. That is when Jack heard a thud. He lit the lamp and said out in a demanding voice, "Who's there?"

That morning when they checked there stuff they realized that who ever it was had stolen $150. The rest of the boat trip went without incident

On August th at 10pm they reached Dyea, Alaska. The air was humid and the wind was almost dead so it was quite a task for them to carry all there luggage and food to the shore. But somehow they got all there supplies to shore before the tide came in. Others weren't so lucky. There were boxes, bags, and all sorts of other belongings scattered in the water. Jack and Anita took there belongings and pitched a tent 00' from the shore and stayed there for months and kept close watch on there possessions most of the time. When they weren't keeping close watch is when misfortune struck again. It wasn't quite dark yet and Anita and Jack were cleaning up supper dishes when they heard a noise out back.

"Not again," said Jack with a groan picking up his . rifle and walking behind the tent. All of a sudden of shot rang out and a man, the thief, lay dead.

Jack walks back in the tent and Anita says, "What was he stealing?"

"He was trying to take off with all of our food and supplies and I couldn't let that happen. You know that we can't get past the Canadian border with-out a years worth of food," replied Jack. The look on his face was that of despair and worry.

"I know that, but couldn't you have at least tried to talk to him, instead of just settling it with one shot?" answered Anita with a calm, cool voice.

"Anita, he was stealing our food. There was no time for talking," replied Jack with a harsh voice.

"Alright then, let's just get some sleep," said Anita with a yawn. But this was not the last of their troubles.

That next morning they left early to get a head start on the trail. Altogether they made 6 trips each back and forth to get there stuff and by the time they made it to the Chilkoot Pass with all there supplies it was many days later and they were both tired. They rested at the foot of the Chilkoot for days and then trudged up the might golden stair chase, The Chilkoot. Same as before, they both made 6 trips up and down the Chilkoot and when all was said and done and they were both at the top, they were both tired and weary. They rested for a few days at the top of the Chilkoot and proceeded down the other side. This is when the biggest of all their problems started.

Both being tired, they had not kept much watch on their supply of food and supplies. They were getting ready for another leg of the journey, it was now October and the air was cold and the rivers frozen. People tried to tell them to wait until spring thaw and go by boat, but Jack was determined to get to the Klondike as soon as possible. This was his first major mistake.

With the nights and days being so cold, came the risk of frost bite and hypothermia. These two things were always on Anita's mind, but rarely ever on Jack's. But one day, Jack started to think about them more.

It was unusually cold October afternoon even for the Yukon and Jack started to notice that Anita was shivering quite a lot.

"Are you cold? Do you want to stop?" Jack asked Anita calmly, but you could tell he was scared by the look in his eyes.

"I'm so cold. I can't go on, Jack," was all that Anita said.

They stopped there and Jack made a fire and tried to warm Anita up. It was too late. The next morning, Anita was dead. Hypothermia.

Now that Jack was all alone, he had more of a load to carry. This started to wear on him. Finally Jack stopped and pitched a tent to spend the night. The thought of hypothermia was always on his mind now. That night, he felt colder then usual, so he built the fire up more than usual. That was his mistake. Leadership Changes at Gap Inc.

In early 00, Gap Inc. announced two changes to its Executive Leadership Team. On Jan. 18, the company announced the hiring of Byron Pollitt as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer.
