"The Cask of Amontillado" by Edgar Allan Poe is rife with symbolism. In this paper I'll be discussing three main, important symbols Montresor's vaults, the human remains in the vaults, and the death of Fortunato. These points were not the only symbols present in "The Cask of Amontillado".Some other symbols include the bells on Fortunato's hat symbolizing life and death, the Amontillado wine symbolizing life's fortunes and mishaps, and the nitre symbolizing life's hardships and difficulties.

The first symbol that I would like to discuss is Montresor's vaults.I believe these vaults symbolize Montresor's life. The long winding staircase and everlasting damp catacombs show us some idea of what he has been through.Life for everyone is a long journey, but it seemed it had been an especially long journey for Montresor.I believe he had to go through many tragic events to bring his self to murder someone.Although he ended up following through with his plan, I think he had second thoughts about actually killing this man.The road to Fortunato's vault was very long, just like life, and he had plenty of time to change his mind, just like in life.

The second item of the story that I found symbolized something besides itself are all the people's remains along the way. These remains were present the whole story reminding us how short life really is.Also, that just like Fortunato's death, life can end unexpectingly. In addition to these symbol's meanings, I also think that these remains show how life can so soon be forgotten and all there is to show are bones.

The final symbolic event that I'd like to discuss is the death of Fortunato.I believe that Montresor killed Fortunato because he knew of all Montresor's misfortunes and Montressor wanted to put all his hardships behind him.He thought if he buried Fortunato, he could bury his past. While he built the wall in front of Fortunato he felt he was letting go of everything brick by brick. We found out at the end that he still hadn't let his past go because fifty years later he was still telling the story and holding on to his burdens from all his life.

This story was very interesting, yet multifaceted. It made me as a reader think and wonder about all the details of life and this story."The Cask of Amontillado" is the epidimy of symbolism. It showed life through a troubled man's eyes and how easily you can lose everything.
