School of the Americas

I.Area

I want to speak about why the School of the Americas in Fort Benning, Georgia, a United States training ground of Latino Americas soldiers should be closed.

II. Scope and Importance

A school that teaches Latino American soldiers tactics of repression, censorship, torture, imprisonment, exile or execution should be closed.Citizens of the United States need to known the true of teaching repressive techniques to Latino American soldiers, in United States soil is wrong.Alumni who graduated from the School of the Americas have been killing thousands of poor and voiceless Latino Americans.Latino American soldiers are not taught human rights; they are taught how to mastermind pain, destruction and misery to their own people.Labor organizers, educators, students, religious leaders and others are especially persecuted through military intelligence, counterinsurgency, and torture techniques to destabilize many nations in the American continent to keep dictatorships. The supporters of this school maintain that the mission of the school is to teach human rights and democratic techniques. However, the United State's tax players pay the school expenses.

III. Focus

I will argue for closing of the school based on personal experience and for extensive research that I have begun to bring together. We need to see clearly our responsibility and the caliginous consequences of keeping the school open. When these soldiers graduate and return to their countries they immediately commit criminal acts against their own people. Then, years later these people of war most of the time end immigrating to the United States as political persecuted war refugees.

IV. Thesis, Statement and Division of the Argument

The idealistic idea of opening the School of the Americas in Panama in 146 was to supposedly to promote stability in the region, to foster greater cooperation among the multinational military forces and, to expand the Latin American armed forces knowledge of U.S. customs and courtesies. However, the School of the Americas has been a training ground for Latino American soldiers who look down on their own people to repress, torture, kill or assassinate thousands of their fellow citizens. Then, the United States Government wants to keep the SOA open to continue de-stabilizing all the Latino American countries for their own economical interest.

V.Identify the Argument

My paper will principally be an argument of fact and policy.Facts and statistics of numerous crimes committed by the 60, 000 graduated alumni of the school will be included in my research.Which includes newspaper articles, books, magazine articles, a movie, and my own personal experience.I believe that closing the school is the best way to save to the people tax dollars and take an act of responsibility and stop promoting criminal acts against Latino Americans.

INTRODUCTION

Attention getting material Do you agree that our government is sponsoring a school that, teaches Latino American soldiers tactics of torture, repression, censorship, imprisonment and murder execution for the benefit of corporate America?

Creditability materials I will argue for closing of the school based on personal experience and for extensive research that I have begun to bring together. We need to see clearly our responsibility and the caliginous consequences of keeping the school open. When these soldiers graduate and return to their countries they immediately commit criminal acts against their own people. Then, years later these people of war most of the time end immigrating to the United States as political persecuted war refugees.

Validation My paper will principally be an argument of fact and policy.Facts and statistics of numerous crimes committed by the 60, 000 graduated alumni of the school will be included in my research.Which includes newspaper articles, books, magazine articles, a movie, and my own personal experience.I believe that closing the school is the best way to save to the people tax dollars and take an act of responsibility and stop promoting criminal acts against Latino Americans.

What you or the (audience) needs to know.A school that teaches Latino American soldier's tactics of repression, censorship, torture, imprisonment, exile or execution should be closed.Citizens of the United States need to known the true of teaching repressive techniques to Latino American soldiers, in United States soil is wrong.Alumni who graduated from the School of the Americas have been killing thousands of poor and voiceless Latino Americans.Latino American soldiers are not taught human rights; they are taught how to mastermind pain, destruction and misery to their own people.Labor organizers, educators, students, religious leaders and others are especially persecuted through military intelligence, counterinsurgency, and torture techniques to destabilize many nations in the American continent to keep dictatorships. The supporters of this school maintain that the mission of the school is to teach human rights and democratic techniques. However, the United State's tax players pay the school expenses.

BODY When the School of the Americas began in Panama in 146, its secrecy was well kept from the U.S. citizens for almost forty-five years.Thereafter, soldiers trained at the School of the Americas murdered U.S. citizens in the mid 180s in Central America. In the meantime, the killings provoked intense public attention as people realized that the School is at U.S. soil, in Fort Benning, Georgia.Eventually, U.S. citizens started asking questions about the School of the Americas and its purpose. Then after a few months, protest about the cost and maintenance of it brought more questions as well the attention of Congress representatives. However, the issue is not that closing the school is a waste of taxpayer's money, (U.S. Congressmen say hypocritically), but the issue is the moral argument for its closure to stop the United States imperialistic policies in most of all the Latin American countries.

In other words, the government of the United States wanted a School that could warranty security and advantage for U.S. business in the zone. The end of World War II and the imminent emerging power of other democracies around the world gave the United States a pretext to establish a military base to protect the canal.Immediately, the Southern Command was founded as the School of the Americas.Thirty years later, under terms of the 177 Panama Canal Treaty and the insistence of one of its alumni General Antonio Manuel Noriega, the school was move to Fort Benning Georgia, in 177 (Pallmer 88).Three years later, the first U.S. citizens were killed abroad by soldiers trained at the school of the Americas. Then, the real focus of concern got public attention for the involvement of the United States government in the region.Just after they had arrived at El Salvador's airport, former students of the School of the Americas killed four U.S. nuns, a few hours later in an insolate place. The December 180 killings of Maryknoll nuns Ita Ford, Maura Clarke, Jean Donovan and Dorothy Kazel are linked to Jose Guillermo Garcia and Carlos Eugenio Vides Casanova who are accused of having ultimate responsibility for the murders of the four women.According to a Los Angeles Times editorial of April 7, 18 "Back in 180, the new Reagan administration was backing the Salvadoran government against left-wing insurgents.

Secretary of State Alexander M. Haig testified to Congress that the four victims, who worked with poor peasants, were perhaps shot because they appeared to be running a military roadblock." (A5)

For example, Diana Ortiz, a U.S. nun was raped, tortured, and abducted from Guatemala for the "crime" of teaching Mayan children how to read and write.

She escaped to tell the truth.Mary A. Fisher, a senior GQ journalist, writes

Ortiz was abducted from the Religious Center in Antigua and taken to a building where she says she was repeatedly raped and tortured. Her interrogators burned her with lighted cigarettes and forced her to participate in the stabbing of another woman prisoner. As she was being transported to another location, Ortiz escaped. (4)

When Ortiz escaped with the help of friends, she returned to the United States to tell the truth. The sophisticated methods of torture learned by Guatemalan soldiers at the School of the Americas were targeted to subdue the mostly Mayan Indian population. Not until Diana Ortiz was tortured and almost murder by the hands of these ex-alumni of the School of the Americas did somebody listen to what she had to say.In his book School of Assassins Jack Nelson Pallmeyer points out Diana's memories, I begin my silent vigil for truth in front of the White House," she said, "-not a silence of complicity, but a silence of commemoration for those who have been tortured, assassinated, or disappeared in Guatemala in the last thirty years" (1).

The instructional manuals at the School of the Americas for many years were teaching death and torture tactics. These torture and tactics were imported by many Latin American soldiers to suppress people in their own countries that complained about low salaries, low education, or any kind of exploitation against them.In 11, the Department of Defense finally admitted the existence of such manuals. They argued that the manuals did not represent the values and moral standards of the U.S. policy at the School of the Americas.A letter published in The New York Times late edition in October 4, 16 written by Robert Richter to the editor mentions that

For a documentary now being completed, I spoke with people from three Latin American countries who all link torture training to the United States Army's School of the Americas. Two were trainees. The third, after his wife had been killed by a school-trained torturer, found one of the torture training manuals the Pentagon now admits was used by the school.

One former trainee talked about homeless people used by the school to demonstrate torture. He said a physician instructor showed students where and how to torture, and injected the blindfolded human guinea pigs with powerful drugs to keep them alive after the torture. (A )

CONCLUTION In conclusion, many injustices are committed by our own government too the Latin American people. I showed to you clear facts. Thus, historically and accurate facts that no man or nation can hide.In other worlds, the School of the Americas started because an injustice committed with the Colombian people.Consequently, many other injustices have been committed to most of all the Latin American nations. To keep open a School that teaches how to kill and murder innocent people is totally wrong. We don't have the right to support a school that helps our business leaders or government leaders to kill others for the sin to claim what for natural right is theirs. The School of the Americas must be closed to stop injustice.

Closure In American culture, the Medal of Honor is sacrosanct. Therefore, when Lyndon Johnson draped the Medal of Honor around of Charles Liteky's neck in November of 168, he said, "Son, I'd rather have one of these babies than be president." Years later, Charles Liteky during Reagan's Administration returned his medal. He returned it because " It's to save lives. In the case of the School of the Americas, it's to stop training the military from the Third World, who take the training back and employ it in the oppression of their people
