The Earths molten iron core has stopped spinning. The electromagnetic field set up by the Earths rotating molten iron core has collapsed. As a result strange events start to occur. One of the first strange things is that thirty Boston residents mysteriously die. The only similarity between all the victims is that each one of them wore a pacemaker.
That's where Dr. Joshua Keys comes in. Dr. Joshua Keys is an electromagnetic expert. So as soon as he hears about the incident Josh directs his team of Ph. D. wannabes to investigate all electromagnetic disturbances over the world. While this is going on, all pigeons in a city square go crazy, and slamming into everything. The birds break windows, they cause traffic disasters and they injure a lot of people. Even a space shuttle is led off the proper approach beacon by electromagnetic disturbances. The shuttle now becomes a huge projectile on its way to the heart of Los Angeles. But the shuttle pilot, Major Rebecca (AKA. Beck) Childs manages to convince the flight commander, Col. Robert Iverson to take her innovative suggestion on saving the Space Shuttle and Los Angeles from disaster. And it works. She lands the shuttle in the storm drain canals of Los Angeles.
All in all there is total chaos and it is clear that the rotation of the Earths molten iron core must be restarted. The best of the best scientists decide the only way to do that is to go down to the core and set off a nuclear explosion in the molten iron shell. The Earths molten iron core is important because when it rotates it generates a vital electromagnetic field around the Earth that protects us from UV rays and most of all solar flares. So at all costs the stationary core must be restarted.
Dr. Joshua Keys is the leader. He meets with expert scientists to discuss how this plan to restart the core will be done. One of the experts is Dr. Conrad Zimsky who is aware of a special project that colleagues of his have been working on for twenty years. Dr. Edward Brazleton has developed a super digging machine prototype that promises to be the vehicle needed to deliver nuclear bombs to the core. In the demonstration it really proves to be quite a piece of hardware. This is just enough to convince the military to spend megabucks to get it operational in three months. Dr. Brazleton reels in astonishment at the idea of reducing years of further work into thee months and claims it would take millions of dollars to do it. The General then says to Dr. Brazleton Would you take a check? The prototype becomes an operational vehicle named Virgil to carry the core team to its mission.
The core team includes Dr. Joshua Keys, Dr. Zimsky, Dr. Brazelton, Rebecca Childs, Col. Iverson, Sergei Leveque, and Dr. Ziminsky. And so the team embarks on their mission and their journey begins through the core of the Earth!!!
During their journey they encounter several problems and they see exactly what the inside of the Earth looks like. One of the first problems they encounter is the fact that they go into a place that is just like space. They crash land in a place filled with crystals, so, they must get out of Virgil for one crystal has gotten stuck into one of their frontal "lasers". As they go out to fix the problem they encounter another problem. The "roof" of this cave like place collapses and magma starts pouring down. Now they have to get out of there and quick before the lava gets them all. As they are repairing Virgil a piece of crystal falls from the ceiling killing the captain. As a result Rebecca must take over the ship and drive it safely to the core. Once again they encounter another problem. The rear of their ship gets damaged critically and so they must eject it. So they go back there as fast as they can, get everything that is of use to them and get out. Unfortunately Sergei Leveque doesn't make it out alive and is crushed along with the little segment of their ship. After all these deaths the remaining people see that the bombs they have aren't enough to set the core back in motion with one large explosion. Then all the scientists work together to find out a solution to their problem. They figure that they must plant the bombs at different parts of the core and set then off at different times. While this is happening on the ship the general back at head quarters decides to launch a weapon that could destroy the world but could maybe set the core spinning again. Rat (a professional hacker who they hired to "filter" the internet about all these incidents so that no one goes crazy about this problem) tries to stop this weapon from launching by hacking into the weapons mainframe and draining it of all its energy, thus buying the people in Virgil some more time to complete the mission. So back to Virgil; After they find out were to place the bombs to set the core spinning again they get right to work on trying to place the bombs in the right area. Soon after they encounter another problem. The nuke at the rear of Virgil needs to be timed correctly as do the other nukes. The problem with the nuke in the back though is that it is burning down there because the ship is almost out of liquid nitrogen due to the fact that they had to use it to do something. So the creator of Virgil goes down there in the burning hot segment of Virgil and sets the timer. He loses is life in the process. They have two remaining nukes to plant. So the last two remaining scientist go and set the timers on one of the nukes. But they encounter another problem. As they are setting the timers they experience a lot of turbulence and the nuke falls on top of Dr. Zimsky. The last remaining scientist leaves him in that section of Virgil and goes to set the last nukes timer. As Dr. Joshua Keys goes to set the last nuke Dr. Zimsky radios In and tells him that the last nuke is to small and that he needs to go to the engine room and take the plutonium out of the engine and tie it to the nuke. As a result of this the ship loses all power and all the bombs are in place. As the bombs start blowing Dr. Joshua Keys and Rebecca are the last ones left. They sit there hopelessly in the last remaining part of Virgil and all of a sudden Dr. Joshua Keys remembers that the material that the ship is made of (unobtainuim) collects heat and uses it as energy. So miraculously Joshua Keys and Rebecca remake the engine of Virgil and they make the ship go and they make it to sea. There they only have enough energy to make a small noise signal. So they make the signal and the navy finds them. After all the bombs blow there is one massive shock wave. After the world is saved Rat goes and loads up something on the Internet that has biographies about every person that died in this mission and the movie ends.
