The novel Animal Farm shows 'a revolution that went wrong' and that a person with power will corrupt. In this essay it will show how Napoleon managed to stay in power for so long. There are five main reasons why Napoleon held his power for so long. They are

1.He eliminated the competition

.He changed things to suit himself

.He lied and gave false accusations

4.Boxer

5.Intimidation

To gain power the first and most important thing you need to do is eliminate the competition. Napoleon had only one pig to compete against, 'Snowball'. Snowball was a smart and cunning pig who could have easily taken control over Napoleon. When Jones was expelled from the farm there were six puppies left, Napoleon took these from their mother and reared them himself. While he was doing this he taught them to attack and one day they finally did. During a meeting the dogs burst out of the loft where Napoleon was keeping them and chased Snowball off the farm. That was the last Snowball was ever seen. Directly after this Napoleon started to make changes to suit himself.

Now that Napoleon had no competition and no body that would be willing to take him on he could do anything that he wanted. At the start of the rebellion seven commandments which were

1.Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy

.Whatever goes upon four legs or has wings is a friend

.No animal shall wear clothes

4.No animal shall sleep in a bed

5.No animal shall drink alcohol

6.No animal shall kill another animal

7.All animals are equal

Were set up to give every animal a fair go, however some of these commandments conflicted what napoleon wanted to do so he had his helper Squealer change them so that anything he did was 'legal'. The five commandments that napoleon changed were

1 and . Became 'Four legs good two legs bad' this was done so the sheep could memorise it

4. Became 'No animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets'

5. Became 'No animal shall drink alcohol to excess'

6. Became 'No animal shall kill another animal without cause'

This was fine until Napoleon started making deals and inviting other pigs to the farm so the commandments became one commandment which was

'All animals are equal but some are more equal than others'

Apart from changing the commandments he also eliminated meetings on Saturday mornings so that he and the other pigs could have free time or plan things for the farm. Napoleon also made it compulsory for the animals to celebrate his birthday.

One of the main things to do if you want to stay in power is to keep your people happy, keep them thinking you are making changes to help them and keep them thinking the changes are for their benefit. To do this Napoleon made the animals think of their time with Jones and how little food they had. During the construction of the windmill the food supply was lower than the time with Jones however Napoleon drew fake graphs showing the animals how much food they supposedly had at that moment and a comparison of the food with Jones. None of the animals stalls had lighting or heating, Napoleon promised the animals that they would get lighting and heating for their stalls, this is what kept them building the windmill.

Once you have people believe in you they can influence others. Boxer was the horse who played this role perfectly, he was the father figure to the other animals. Boxer had two main ideas of napoleon which were

'Napoleon is always right'

'Anything napoleon says must be true'

While doing his work Boxer would say this to himself over and over again to keep himself motivated. After saying this for a while it started to rub off onto the other animals and they started to accept Napoleon more.

Throughout Napoleons reign he was constantly intimidating the animals. The main way he intimidated the animals was by saying that he was the only person that could keep Jones away and that if he was kicked out Jones would return. The thought of Jones returning was enough to keep Napoleon in power. To guarantee his success Napoleon gave one public execution to show what would happen if anyone tried to go against him.

As you can see napoleon was a very clever pig. He used a variety of ways too keep his power. Although the animals believed that the farm could not function without him they should have kicked him out when his job was done.
