Diet Fads & Bulimia

By Jesse Wilder

In the United States, diet fads seem to pile up on each other, growing off each other much like the regeneration of cancer cells.I think it has gotten to the point where your not jumping on a bandwagon anymore, because a bandwagon just isn't big enough to hold the never-ending list of diet fads. Most of these fads are fueled by half truths and sometimes even blatant lies. Some 40% of all weight loss advertisements have been proven of some sort of misrepresentation. Not to mention the other 55% that most likely were fueled by the same misrepresentations. The lay the stage with promises and healthy skepticism.

The Too Good To be True

The Federal Trade Commition says, "Look out for advertisements boasting before and after photos, claiming no diet or exercise is needed, and statements such as clinically or doctor proven results." Some more things to look out for include accusations of "Natural and Safe" methods of weight loss.Claims like "Rapid and Permanent" weight loss and promising medications requiring no diet or exercise.

Some of Today's Popular Fads

Atkins Nutritional Approach

The Atkins Nutritional Approach, (notice they don't call it a diet) consisting of 4 different phases, is basically outlined in terms of reducing the amount of carbohydrate intake on a day to day basis. They do this by restricting carbohydrate intake to 0 grams each day, then increasing to 5 grams for a week or until weight loss stops, then you are to subtract 5 grams from your daily intake keeping weight loss consistent.Once you have reached your desired goal, you are to increase you intake in 10 gram increments to maintain weight loss, but not surpass the 0 gram a day thresh hold.

While this seems like a promising diet, restricting the intake of carbohydrates can lead to loss of energy and will.I think if you feel down and out, finding yourself sleeping more than usual, you are ultimately doing yourself more harm than good.It seems to me one should find the optimum amount of intake, so that they can use this valuable energy for excising.I think restricting one thing or the other is not the way to go, rather moderation should be the key. With a well balanced diet, that is not restricting, but getting everything you need, then exercising regularly, weight loss seems inevitable.Exercise is no trick, whether your working out at a first class gym, or just so much as getting out and enjoying the great outdoors on a nice walk, your exercising.

The Zone Diet

A diet that seems to somewhat iterate what I have just said, is the Zone Diet.It offers help on customizing a diet that pertains to you, as a male or female, size, and future goals.A basic example of this zone is as follows, 40% cal. Carbohydrate intake, 0% cal. Protein intake, and 0% cal. Fat intake. Most health book's figures are closely related to these numbers projected by The Zone Diet.

I believe that if this diet was customized, and tuned into your own personal needs, tagged along with exercise, could be a very effective and consistent way of weight loss.

Fasting

While this may not be so popular as to be called a fad, it seems many people turn to fasting to solve their weight loss problems. While fasting for 1 to 4 hours is no severe danger, anything more is.It is when people over do it, they begin to hurt themselves.Again even though 1 or 4 hour fasting is no great harm, I would never suggest this method of weight loss.I think it's short term results could promote longer periods of fasting to lose more weight. This can become very dangerous, and often ends in gorging themselves with foods after they end a fasting period of many days.

The Grape Fruit Diet

The Grape Fruit Diet, this diet when looked at in detail, is really just riddled with many different foods of variety. To me it's just one big well balanced diet, but is probably most likely labeled "The Grape Fruit Diet" to get some books off the shelf and make a quick buck.It seems obvious that the grape fruit could easily be replaced with just about any other fruit, because it's not the grape fruit fueling the weight loss, it's the balanced diet outlined around it that is causing the weight loss.I think a lot of people hear about this diet and think to themselves that this is the easiest diet they've ever heard of.Of course they jump right into it, but when they learn they have to abide by this well balanced diet of variety, are quickly scared away, but yet still claim the diet failed them even though they didn't follow it properly.

I think this is the case with just about any diet.People are led on with promising quick and easy weight loss, and then when they realize the real weight load ahead of them, not to mention exercise, they are quick to give up and scold the diet.As you said Doc, attitude plays a huge role in weight loss.A negative attitude will not only render almost any attempt in weight loss a failure, but also induce weight gain and poor health.

Bulimia

Now that we're on the subject of attitude, this seems to be the best time to bring up the topic of Bulimia.

What is Bulimia?

Bulimia is a psychological eating disorder. It is characterized by episodes of binge eating followed by inappropriate methods of weight control. These methods include things such as vomiting, fasting, enemas, excessive use of laxatives and diuretics, or compulsive exercising.Sufferers often consume 0,000 calories at one time, often following a long binge.

Causes?

There is as of now, no definite known cause of bulimia.Researchers believe it begins with the dissatisfaction of the person's body and extreme concerns with body shape and size. They often suffer from a low self-esteem, they feel helpless and have a great fear of becoming fat. This again all leads back to attitude, where as someone confident in themselves, would not look to such ways of weight loss, but would instead choose a more positive route, such as a well balanced diet and regular exercise.

There is however, a new study showing evidence that the eating disorder in most part, is produced from a chemical malfunction in the brain and not merely from excessive desire to remain thin.

Researchers say that, women who had suffered from bulimia and recovered were more affected psychologically than other women by being deprived of tryptophan, which plays an indirect role in appetite regulation.

Tryptophan is an amino acid that is found naturally in many foods and is used by the body to make serotonin, a mood and appetite regulating chemical in the brain.

In a further study, subjects were given identical looking fruit drinks and snacks, some with tryptophan and some without. They were not told of which they were getting. The researchers results, suggest that lowered brain serotonin function can trigger some of the clinical features of bulimia nervosa in individuals vulnerable to the disorder.

Throughout nearly this whole paper I have stressed the importance of attitude. Here now, it seems like it could be zapped without one even knowing it, almost leaving them helpless to turn their attitudes around. The very thing that regulates mood and appetite, tryptophan, could be in jeopardy by not eating the foods containing the needed amino acids to produce it in the brain. This would really put someone susceptible to weight gain at a major disadvantage.Whether someone suffering from Bulimia, or weight loss, this could be a major determining factor in whether they they turn their life around.

It kinda seems ironic that one needs a well balanced diet to obtain this amino acid, in order to improve their attitudes torwards weight loss and beginning a well balanced diet.

Overall though, with the right attitude, maybe even with the support of others along the way, exercising and the proper diet can take someone as far as they are willing to go, it all depends on them and their willingness to succeed at something that might not be, easy as cake.
