In act 1 both Sheila Birling and Eva Smith were introduced to the audience. Compare these characters and explain why priestly has included them?

An Inspector Calls was written by J.B .Priestley in 145, the last year of the Second World War, the play is set in 11, two years before the First World War. The play reflects how different people's priorities and opinions were in 11 as apposed to 145. In 11 the upper class owned Britain, many people were underpaid, prices were kept high and wages low. The group that suffered the most were working class women; the character of Eva Smith reflects this in the play. The war dramatically altered the social face of Britain in many ways, the classes were pulled together and everyone helped out, the class divide seemed to e shattered. In act 1 both Sheila Birling and Eva Smith To present the results for this method I decided that the most effective way was to use bar charts for each location Cofton hill and the visitor centre. By using bar charts you can easily see the differences by the length of the bars and also I decided to make my bar charts start in the centre of the page so they could go into minus and plus which allows me to see the quality of the environment is poor (minus) or good (plus). With the range that I used (- to +) I can also see how good or bad the particular part of the environment I am looking at is. Also I can add up the amount of pluses and the amount of minuses for each location and the one with the higher number effectively has the best environment.

After comparing the two bar charts it is easy to see that Cofton hill has the best environment due to only three of the bars going into the minus section where as in the bar chart for the visitor centre only three of the bars go into the plus section. When you look at the number at the bottom of each bar chart which shows the total of all the plusses and minuses you can see that Cofton hill has +11 and the visitor centre has 8 this tells us that Cofton hills environment is allot better than that of the visitor centre. These graphs also show us that the visitor centre most likely has a lot more people in that area due to the environment being more damaged and more crowded.

Hypothesis C Environmental quality will be highest away from the visitor centre.

After viewing my results and graphs I think that my hypothesis may be correct due to their being more plusses at Cofton hill than at the visitor centre.
