Cherish the Moment

In today's fast paced and demanding world, it is easy to get consumed with work, responsibilities and other distractions in life.If one is not careful to recognize when he or she is getting too involved with these aspects and take time to balance life with a mix of pleasure and responsibility, our devotion may become directed to insignificant effects, and before we know it life will pass us by.After all, what is life with out memories of good times and time spent with loved ones? This was the case with Mr. Khanh.Fortunately Mr. Khanh was able to recognize this concept before it was too late, unlike Mr. Chinh who no longer had time on his side.

If we do not take time to pause and enjoy life, we become like a machine on automatic. We go through the motions, with out feeling. When this happens, we can lose our identities and become numb.Mr. Khanh had turned into this type of blunt, automatic person. When he describes how he tried to console his upset wife, he admits that he could not empathize with her because he was distracted with the faint buzz of the alarm clock. Also, in the beginning of the story, several times Mr. Khanh, says "I am Just a business man".One can see that by making this statement, Mr. Khanh has lost his identity. He catorgorize him self by a title, not as a person.I can certainly identify with Mr. Khanh. About two years ago, I began working for an investment company at a bank.I became so involved with my work that I realized that I was no longer enjoying life.I was on a solid routine, day in and day out.I had no sense of self.I literally, started feeling like I was a robot set on automatic. I focused so much of my attention on work, that I did not even notice the distance that I put between myself and my loved one's. When dealing with the people who meant the most to me, I was still a caring person, but it was hard to carry a heavy burden of true concern when my thoughts were on something else. Not only had I become overly consumed with my work, I too, started to lose my identity.I was a banker, that's what I did. What happened to the girl inside me, who still had dreams and goals, I wondered, was she gone? Would I settle into this monotonous banking title, and go through the rest of my life on automatic? This surely was not the life I envisioned living when I was younger.I wanted myself back.

Not only can one experience a loss of identity when he or she becomes consumed with life's responsibilities and other distractions, but when one fails to seize the moment and live in the now, what could be wonderful memories become lost and the mind becomes filled with meaningless recollections in their place. I lived in Hawaii for two years. The thing that I remember most about the island, was sitting in traffic jams on the highway, while trying to get to work.I didn't even bother to look to my right, where views of some of the most spectacular beaches in the world, lay just a glace away.Instead of opening my windows, letting the top down on my car and enjoying the warm, fresh ocean air, I closed up everything, ran my air conditioner and complained about the heat.Hawaii is said to be one of the most beautiful places on earth, and the memory that I have most, is of sitting in my car staring at the concrete divider and yellow lines on the highway. It was only after years of living back on the main land, and browsing through old photographs, that I realize what a beautiful place I once lived in.I wish I would have indulged myself in the beauty of that place, now I may never get the chance to see its splendor again.Mr. Khanh realized that he failed to live in the moment and enjoy life when he says "I have lost a whole country and didn't even give it a thought".

When my life is nearing its end and I am old and gray, I do not want to look back on the journey and realize that I have no good memories, because the things that I was devoted to, where ultimately insignificant. When Mr. Khan realizes that he had been devoting his life to irrelevant things, he was scared, because he realized that he had let half a lifetime of memories pass him by."I am afraid that deep down I am built on a much smaller scale than the surface of my mind spires to.When something finally comes back to me with real force, perhaps it will be a luxury car hanging on a crane or the freshly painted wall of the new dry- cleaning store or the faint buzz of the alarm clock beside my be.Deep down, secretly, I may be prepared to betray all that I think I love the most". While it is too late to change the past, it is never too late to start living in the now.Luckily, this dawned on Mr. Khan before it was too late, like it was for Chinh. He began living his life at that very moment of realization.I am grateful that I have learned this lesson rather early in life, in comparison to Mr. Khanh.I am so appreciative of this matter, because I now have a child.I don't want to rob myself of and wonderful memories of him, because in time, he will grow up and move on his own way.I have decided, like Mr. Khan, to start living in the now, by focusing and enjoying the wonderful and truly important things around me, such as my family.I try not to focus on lack of in life and appreciate what I do have.I believe that if I cherish life to it's fullest, I will be complete.
