"World War I had far reaching effects on Russia's Society and
economy"
How important were these in causing the March Revolution of
117?
The World War One effects on Russia's society and economy played a big part in
causing the revolution of 117.
The break down of the economy from the effects of the war became apparent.
The first months of the war had already shown that the Russian economy was not
capable of satisfying the demands placed on it by the war. Arms and ammunition
were desperately needed, and industry could not make good the losses. Businesses
closed down, one after the other. In 115 alone, 57 factories and mills stopped
work. Production began to drop in the most important branches of the economy.
The country began to experience a fuel crisis, and a large proportion of the
countrys industrial plants came to a stop through lack of fuel. Transport was
paralysed. 575 railway stations were no longer able to transport goods. In the port
at Archangel, the crates of goods were not transported to where they were needed
because of the more important machinery and equipment, which took priority. As a
result of the disorganisation of transport, there were food shortages in the towns of
Central Russia as early as 115. At the same time, thousands of tons of grain,
butter, and meat were rotting away at railway stations. All these things lead to the
revolution of 117
The countries financial system was also disorganised. Increased taxes and the
introduction of domestic loans did not make up for the losses. The government had
to resort to foreign loans. This soon led to the disorganisation of the whole
financial system, and to the exceptional rise in the cost of living.
The war also had a very bad effect on agriculture. It came to a complete standstill.
The threat of famine hung over the country. The war also had a great impact on
society. Tens of thousands of people were killed or died from food shortages etc.
More and more people were openly criticising the government. They staged
demonstrations in the streets, demanding more food and an end to the war.
On the 4th of March, the workers at the Putilov Engineering Works demanded a
fifty per cent increase in their wages to cope with the escalating prices. It was
refused, and management declared a lock-out. The Putilov workers called on other
workers for support.
On the 7th of March, lack of fuel caused engineering works to close down,
workers were thrown into the street, and strike committees were elected. Women
started to attack bakeries. The Police did not interfere.
On the 8th of March, people celebrating International Women's day were also
shouting for bread. By the th of March, there were around 17, 000 strikers on the
streets. Food stores were being broken into and looted.
At this stage the demonstrations, which had at first been about economics, turned
political. Strikers carrying revolutionary banners marched through the streets
shouting such slogans as "Down with the German woman" and "Down with the
war."
People were bound sooner or later to ask themselves the purpose of all their
suffering, the end to which they were sacrificing their lives and their health.
In conclusion, WWI's far reaching effects on Russia's Society and economy were
very important in causing the March Revolution of 117. The war effected
Russia's food supply and other goods. This lead to strikes and riots, which
eventually lead to the revolution. Had there been no war, there would not have
been the March
Revolution.
