There are many things that have changed my perception of the world.However being only 16 years old, I am easily influenced, and I also suffer from limited life experience.For most of my live I have lived in a sleepy town called Edgewood.Nothing exciting ever happens.To this day we rarely lock our doors and everyone knows everything about everybody.
One film that I found interesting and have seen numerous times is "Save the Last Dance".In this movie a girl names Sara is my age and is suddenly yanked out of her secure home and environment. Due to her recent death of her mother she is forced to give up her dream of dancing and must reside with a father she's never known. She lives in a rundown apartment in the Bronx of New York City.She is the only white girl in an all black high school.
The first emotion I encountered was fear.I feared for Sara's physical safety.Since she was different she had to defend herself, and when she started dating a black boy form school they were constantly defending their relationship as well as them selves.I was always taught that the color of your skin doesn't matter.However I have not always been afforded the same privilege. I have been in a similar situation, where being white was a crime.I lived in El Paso for a while; I was the only white girl in an all-Hispanic school.I was always made fun of and pushed in the halls.I eventually learned to defend my self at an early age.Then when I went back to school out here I thought it would be different, but some Hispanics think they are better than white people and I got into a fight defending my color.
It's very scary to live as an outsider, especially as a teenager.We want nothing more than to be accepted by our peers.Ever since I dropped out of high school and did a corresponding high school program, I have been considered an outsider.I have lost contact to many of my friends and peers. It was a dramatic change from being miss popular to becoming nobody.But in the end there is a brighter side and I think I am doing much better in life than wasting my time at a high school and dealing with all the criticism and the kids thinking they are better than everyone else.
In the movie the girl was slowly excepted and able to pursue her dream of dancing and was accepted to Julliard.As for me Being young and Dumb I ran away.I then realized that for me to accomplish my dreams was not to party or hang around "cool" people, it was to live in a secure environment.Now I am attending college and pursuing my dream to get a degree, and be self sufficient, and live on my own.I have a new perception of the world.There will be many obstacles in my life to come.I may be discriminated for the color of my skin, my last name, the language I speak and the level of education I have.But I have learned while you are in the middle of a crisis your reality is distorted and you may feel persecuted and you may feel that the whole world is against you; but all crises have an ending.Even in adverse conditions we can make our dreams come true.I will conclude this essay with a quote "There is no reality only perception".
