The Epic of Gilgamesh and Genesis

While there are many differences between the Epic of Gilgamesh and Genesis in the Old Testament, there are also several similarities. Many details in the Epic of Gilgamesh are similar to occurrences in the Hebrew story of creation. One of the major similarities between the two works is the story of the flood. Another similarity is the occurrence of snakes in each story. The resemblance of each story to each other implies that perhaps each culture "borrowed" from each other to help explain the creation of man.

In the Epic of Gilgamesh, a great flood wiped out nearly all of mankind in a great disaster. One of the Mesopotamian Gods Enlil, decided that he was not happy with the behavior he was seeing, and that he wanted to destroy all of mankind. " 'The uproar of mankind is intolerable and sleep is no longer possible by reason of the babel.' So the gods agreed to exterminate mankind." This is a direct similarity with the story of the flood in Genesis. The Hebrew God Yahweh decided to exterminate mankind because he too was angered with man's behavior. Each god wanted to rid the earth of evil men, and replace it with only the righteous. In each story, the god(s) chose to save only a small group of humans one individual and his family. The relationship between god and humans is very similar in both stories. In each story, the god(s) communicate with humans before destroying the earth with great floods. Noah and his family are the only humans deemed worthy of salvation from the flood in the Hebrew story. In the Epic of Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh had encountered the only humans who had survived the flood (Utnapishtim). In both stories, the chosen individuals were instructed by their gods to build a boat and bring their families and many animals. Each honored their God in similar ways. Gilgamesh said, "what you have commanded I will honor and perform," and, "Noah did this; he did all that God commanded him." Each story was similar in that both the Hebrews and the Sumerians had strong values for obedience for their gods. Another similarity between the Epic of Gilgamesh and Genesis is the parallel of snakes in each story. The snake in Gilgamesh steals the flower of immortality from Gilgamesh, taking away the chance for man to ever become immortal. A snake appears in a similar state in the bible, where the snake deviously offers Eve the forbidden fruit, thus stealing away her (and mankind's) "immortality." The snake in both stories has a similar effects causing the fall of mankind.

Although there are many more similarities in each of these stories, the maximum length of this paper limits the possibility to include every single comparison. The story of the great floods, the relationship between the gods and humans before the floods, and the inclusion of similar snake stories are some major parallels between each creation story. Such parallels may suggest that each may have borrowed from each other's stories, though many believe the Sumerian's Gilgamesh was written first. All in all, these great stories tell us why it was necessary for god's to cleanse the earth of evil men, as well as why a snake kept immortality away from man forever.
