Grapes of Wrath

In the 10s through the 140s severe dust storms were destroying farmland with an unrelentles rage.People were abandoning their homes, land, and way of life. Two and a half million people had moved out of the plain States, creating the dust bowl exodus; the largest migration in American history. Most of the Okies headed for California with the hopes of finding work and a chance to start over. For some of the Okies, this migration was just too much and the trip to California eventually killed them. Most of the Okies who did make it to California were faced with a life almost as difficult as the one they left.

Some, like Roy Abbot of Colgate, hitchhiked to California.Abbot said that his moving day consisted of " callin the dog and spittin on the fire." Many people like this did not have automobiles, many clothes, or any belongings that would be worth hauling on the long trip. Also, these hitchhikers had to make their loads small so that it would be convenient for them to travel with others. Those who did have their own vehicles tried to drive to California. An old car with three mattresses was latched to its roof was considered to be "rich".A car with two mattresses was said to be "mediocre".If someone saw a car with only one mattress, they would say, "There goes a poor Okie." Every family of Okies has a different story. Some of them were similar to the Joads, and some were totally different, but they all had one thing in common. They all prepared for and anticipated the trip down Route 66.The mother road had blasting furnace heat, the winding mountain roads, the bridgeless rocky paths, the washed out mud banks, the hunger, and the uncertainty that threatened them every mile of the way.

Edgar and Myrtle Masters packed their children in an old Studebaker in Hollis Oklahoma. They headed down the mother road to California in 18.They suffered from four flat tires in the first fifty miles.Because many did not have enough money to own reliable vehicles, these kinds of problems often occurred.Another person, Rosalene Long, was nine years old when her family of five and a "cranky young couple with a loud toddler" left Stuart Oklahoma.Rosalene rememered that the family got caught in a flood in Gallup, New Mexico. They were forced to hide out for one week in a large tin building, along with twelve other families, until the floodwaters subsided.

The problems did not stop here, with the long and hard trip. When the Okies finally reached California they were faced with new challenges and obstacles. Many of the California farms were corporate owned. They were larger and more modernized that those of the Southern plains, and the crops were unfamiliar. The rolling fields of wheat were replaces by crops of fruit, nuts, and vegetables. It was very hard for the Okies to learn about the new crops and this made it difficult for them to farm and find work. Like the Joad family, some forty- percent of migrant farmers wound up in the San Joaquin Valley picking grapes and cotton.Life for migrant workers was very wearisome. They were paid by the quantity of fruit and cotton that they picked.Their earnings ranged from seventy-five cents to one dollar and twenty-five cents for each day. This was barely enough to rent a tarpaper shack with no floor or plumbing. These conditions were hardly adequate shelter for these families.
