The Crucible portrays the Puritan community of Salem during the infamous, Salem Witch hunts and details the personal conflicts caused by the witch hunts. During this time, a farmer named John Proctor commits a crime of adultery with Abigail Williams, his servant. Elizabeth Proctor, John's wife, discovered the affair and relieved Abigail from her duties.Shortly thereafter, Elizabeth is accused pf witchcraft and John is filled with much inner conflict. Te resolve the conflict, he is challenged to answer his question of "What is John Proctor?".

Although John Proctor cheated on his wife Elizabeth, he still loved her and cared for her deeply. John's love for his wife is shown best when Elizabeth is accused of witchcraft. He goes to great lengths to defend her and even openly confesses to committing adultery to the court. Elizabeth also cares greatly for her husband. When she is called upon to verify the validity of John's statements, she is not completely honest in an attempt to protect her husband. Ironically, this good intention contradicts what John has already confessed to, so his claims hold no water.

More of John Proctor's conflicts come to the surface when he was deciding on testifying in court. When he first hears of the witch trials being held in Salem, he thinks that the trials are only minor and cannot affect him. As the trials get more and more out of hand, he begins to see that he must tell the courts of the affair between him and Abigail. He doesn't want to confess his lechery and blacken his name. Yet when, Elizabeth is accused of being a witch, he snaps and realizes he must testify against Abby, even if it means blackening his name and hurting the one he lusted for not long ago. Initially he is reluctant to openly admit his crimes and tries to have Mary Warren testify against the other girls by calling them liars. When this attempt fails, he finally bursts out with a confession, calling Abigail a whore and proclaiming his guilt publicly. He then realizes that matters have gone too far, and even the truth doesn't matter.

Proctor redeems himself in the final act of the play by disparaging the witch trials. He is offered a final opportunity to confess to witchcraft which gives him tremendous inner turmoil. He could either confess to a lie and ruin his name, or hang. He starts to give in to confessing and even signs a written confession. This becomes a personal and religious stand for Proctor about the truth. Proctor discovers who he is and is willing to die with a good name rather than confessing to a lie that would blacken his soul. At the end, as he goes to hang, he sins are forgiven by Elizabeth when she says He have his goodness now. God forbid I take it from him!

Proctor struggles with himself about his sins throughout the play. This inner conflict offers a deeper plot and helps the play reach out and touch the audience. Even though he struggles to discover what is right, he redeems himself when he takes a stand and truly discovers what he is.
